Top 5 Persona 5 Boss Battles

Stealing Hearts and Kicking Ass

The second half of the anime adaptation of the Persona 5 video game is well underway, giving us animated equivalents to some of the most famous moments from one of 2017’s most acclaimed RPGs. It’s certainly a mixed bag, but at the very least in brings back nostalgia for when we first saw Joker and the rest of the Phantom Thieves go up against the demonic manifestations of evil adults’ hearts. After all, these five boss battles were something to behold!

Fair warning, there will be SPOILERS AHEAD!

#5: Azazel (Ichiryusai Madarame)

This famous artist will do whatever it takes to maintain his lifestyle, even if it means stealing the work of his students. While he may be lacking in creativity, it doesn’t stop him from assuming a somewhat artistic form during his boss fight. As a collection of floating portraits, players have to be careful which target they attack, as each has its own resistances to either elemental or physical attacks. Bypass that, and you get to indulge in beating the crap out of this vain old man.

#4: Leviathan (Sae Niijima)

The two halves of this boss battle highlight the unorthodox style that Persona is known and loved for. On the one hand you have to expose Shadow Niijima for cheating during a deadly game of roulette, all before she transforms into a gruesome death machine who decides to go Full Metal Jacket on your whole party. This little twist was more than welcomed, with her final form being one of the more intimidating boss battles to grace the game.

#3: Yaldabaoth (God of Control)

While a little late to the game, the fact that the final boss is essentially an all-powerful yet equally narcissistic deity more than succeeded in concluding Persona 5’s story with a bang. A former treasure that was distorted by the will of the masses, this creature was able to use the seven deadly sins as its own personal arsenal. After a gruelling series of battles, being able to shoot God in the face via Uber-Satan with an unholy pistol was more than satisfying.

#2: Samael (Masayoshi Shido)

Despite not actually being the final antagonist, that’s not to say this politician didn’t give the Phantom Thieves a run for their money. After being cornered by Joker and company, Shido proceeds to cycle through no less than FIVE transformations, each stronger than the last while also reflecting his single-minded goal to manipulate the populace to his benefit. It may sound like a slog to get through, but after all the turmoil he put through Joker through, it’s well worth the struggle!

#1: Asmodeus (Suguru Kamoshida)

Sure, in retrospect he may not be the most difficult of bosses to overcome, but the one thing that Kamoshida had that the other bosses didn’t quite managed to replicate was build-up. Joker, Ryuji and Ann all were subjected to his villainy, plus we had visited his Palace multiple times before we even knew what a Calling Card was. Seriously, so much effort was devoted into making you hate this guy that when it came time to end him it felt like a epic event. Being able to burn, shoot and generally kick the crap out of this perverted teacher was a reward in of itself!
