No More Horsin’ Around
Season 5 of the critically acclaimed animated series Bojack Horseman is just around the corner, and needless to say things are looking pretty bleak for the cast. While the titular alcoholic equine found a small glimmer of hope during the Season 4 finale, the amount of leftover cliffhangers promise some rather devastating drama for Hollywoo’s residents. In anticipation of the show’s imminent return, we’re taking a look at the episodes that left us feeling nothing short of hollow inside…
#3: “Ruthie”
Talk about pulling the rug out from under our feet. By introducing us to Princess Carolyn’s descendent in the far off future, we’re led to believe that she and Ralph found their happily ever after and had the family they always wanted. That is, until it’s revealed that Ruthie is a figment of PC’s imagination, conjured up to deal with the pain of having yet another miscarriage. So much for that happy ending.
#2: “That’s Too Much, Man!”
Sarah Lynn was always one of the more broken characters in the series; a former child-star turned drug-addict who constantly kept finding ways to fall further off the rails. Joining her on one of her benders, Bojack decides to make amends to everyone he hurt (including Penny) but it all fails in spectacular fashion. Of course, the real kicker comes when the two visit the planetarium together after sharing a heart to heart…only to have Sarah Lynn suddenly pass away.
#1: “Time’s Arrow”
In arguably the series’ most harrowing example of storytelling, we finally get to see things from Beatrice’s perspective as she falls further into the grip of dementia. Through her lucid thoughts, we learn the true identity of Henrietta, the mystery of Hollyhock’s mother, as well as the nightmarish childhood she endured at the hands of her passively aggressive misogynistic father, as well as how her marriage to Bojack’s father broke apart. While we’re constantly reminded of how she emotionally abused her son, watching Beatrice’s sad life unveil before her eyes in such painfully vivid detail had us on the verge of tears.
