Small Time Scares
Video games have given us no end of fantastic villains over the years, with a fair few of them rooted in the horror genre. Granted, not everyone can reach legendary status like Pyramid Head, Albert Wesker, Alma Wade and SHODAN, but we still feel that some of these lesser-known monsters deserve mention for their fright factor!
#3: Monika
“Doki Doki Literature Club” (2017)
Manipulative, mentally unstable and meta. That’s Monika in a nutshell. After becoming aware that she is inside a dating sim video game, the President of the Literature Club takes drastic measures in order to earn the affection of the player character despite not being a romance option. This leads her to altering the other NPCs’ personalities and coding to the point they fall into madness and are killed off in some way. Her intentions might have been born from affection, and you can sympathise with her loneliness, but by the end it’s clear that Monika has made the jump from waifu to the stuff of nightmares.
#2: The Groom/Eddie Gluskin
“Outlast: Whistleblower” (2014)
He’s a psychopath obsessed with finding the perfect bride, one who is willing to carve his way through every inmate of Mount Massive Asylum to do so. While preaching the ethics of love and the sanctity of parenthood, Gluskin mutilates anyone he can get his hands on in order to try and turn them into a woman. Needless to say, no one survives the process, and given how he has an entire gymnasium filled with hanging corpses, he’s been through a lot of brides. A marriage proposal has never been so terrifying!
#1: The Spider
“Limbo” (2010)
A giant, mechanical spider that hunts you down all across the black and white world of purgatory, all in the vain hope of tearing you to pieces with its insidious legs. Despite being nothing more than a dark shape, this contraption still manages to inspire fear each time it randomly crawled onto the screen. Those with a severe case of arachnophobia, beware.
