Time for a Costume Change
With the new “Halloween“‘s box-office record breaking opening weekend, it’s looking like we’re in for a number of classic horror film reboots in the near future. Apparently, the next one to look out for might be “Friday the 13th“, which was remade from its 1980 original in 2009 and hasn’t been touched since. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “LeBron Jamesâ SpringHill Entertainment and Vertigo Entertainment, the latter of which produced It, are in talks to team up to produce a new iteration telling of the gory happenings at Camp Crystal Lake”. The only potential threat to this new reboot is an ongoing legal dispute between the first filmâs screenwriter, Victor Miller and the producer and director of the film, Sean Cunningham. Although Miller has regained the rights to the original screenplay, no one knows yet who owns the rights to the horrifying face of the film, Jason Voorhees. We’re hopeful that this classic slasher will make it to the screen once again, but until we know for sure, let’s look at 3 horror films also from the 80s that deserve a makeover.

#3: âPumpkinheadâ (1988)
Directed by Stan Winston â who is best known for his incredible special effects work â âPumpkinheadâ adds a supernatural twist to the classic revenge tale formula. After his son is killed by a group of teenagers, Ed Harley seeks the aid of a witch who helps him summon a grotesque demon. The monster then sets out to kill the teens, but the catch is Ed must witness each murder through its eyes. Despite its impressive effects and a remarkable performance from Lance Henriksen, âPumpkinheadâ only managed to attain cult-classic status. However, a contemporary remake with the right cast and the right script could make âPumpkinheadâ a household name.
#2: âThe Lost Boysâ (1987)
A dark twist on Peter Pan, âThe Lost Boysâ tells the story of a pair of brothers who discover their new hometown is inhabited by vampires. Directed by Joel Schumacher, âThe Lost Boysâ was one of the first films that relinquished the gothic tropes of classic vampire films for a more youthful and contemporary appeal. Featuring iconic performances from Corey Haim, Corey Feldman and Kiefer Sutherland, âThe Lost Boysâ also maintained a grisly edge that later âsexyâ vampire movies lacked. In a post-âTwilightâ era, a remake of âThe Lost Boysâ could be the bridge between fans of both horrifying and seductive creatures of the night.
#1: âCreepshowâ (1982)
A collaboration between two masters of terror, âCreepshowâ was George Romero and Stephen King‘s homage to the horror comics of the 1950âs. A five-part anthology film, âCreepshowâ featured a star-studded cast and the legendary makeup effects of Tom Savini to bring these tales of creepy fun to life. With each story serving as a metaphor for a common fear or phobia, Romero and King crafted a film that delivered the scares while also not taking itself too seriously. With anthology films being a rarity these days, a remake of âCreepshowâ could tap into some present-day fears while also providing some tongue-in-cheek thrills.
