She Went Higher, Further and Faster Than Expected
The highly anticipated release of Marvel’s newest character debut, “Captain Marvel”, took place this weekend and the Kree warrior definitely proved that no Skrull can keep her from making history. According to The Hollywood Reporter,
“The superhero pic scored the biggest worldwide opening of all time for a female-fronted film, as well as the second-largest for a comic book adaptation.”
That’s huge! For reference, the film, starring Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson, made $455 million in worldwide ticket sales, including $153 million in North America. But what does this mean compared to other films in the genre? Well, compared to other female-fronted superhero films, “Captain Marvel” beat the $103 million grossed by DC’s “Wonder Woman” on its first weekend. In terms of Marvel’s own records, Carol Danvers’ debut is the second-largest domestic start for a new superhero behind academy award winning “Black Panther”. Not to mention, in the grand scheme of things, “Captain Marvel” came out as the seventh biggest launch for the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the huge successes of the three “Avengers” movies, “Black Panther”, “Captain America: Civil War” and “Iron Man 3”.
Those numbers are huge and definitely counter any argument against the ability of female lead films (especially superhero films) to make an impact and stand their ground.
Thanks cap!
