Oh We’re Putting On a Happy Face Alright
After months of anticipation and uncertainty surrounding Joaquin Phoenix’s upcoming interpretation of the iconic DC Comics villain Joker, Warner Bros. finally dropped a sneak peak, giving us a taste of the mischief ahead. Before we dive into the plot details and fan reactions, take a look at the teaser below!
From director Todd Phillips, “Joker” will be a stand-alone film that explores the ambiguous story of Arthur Fleck and his journey to becoming the hysterical villain we know today. The teaser takes us along a condensed recounting of Arthur’s struggles with humour and happiness, with clips of him in therapy and speaking about his upbringing:
“My mother always tells me to smile and put on a happy face.” “She told me I had a purpose, to bring laughter and joy to the world.”
We then see him as the victim of numerous street fights and acts of harassment and violence brought on by his unorthodox behaviour and clown-like appearance, causing him to put on that creepy forced smile we recognize and become the Clown Prince of Crime.
“I used to think my life was a tragedy, but now I realize, it’s a comedy.”
“Joker” is set to release October 4th. Are you ready??? Check out how the internet is reacting to this new teaser trailer!
Marc Maron was not lying when he said JOKER would be a character study on a mentally ill person becoming the Clown Prince of Crime.

We’ve never really seen that before on the big screen. Joker has always just existed. He was the Joker and nothing before mattered. pic.twitter.com/OvN4g84bdq
So the Joaquin Phoenix Joker thing is not like the when he faked being a rapper thing?

I’m sorry this new Joker does not have any tattoos that are adjectives or express his specific emotions therefore I cannot recognize him

I love the juxtaposition in how Joaquin Phoenix shuffles and trudges as Arthur, but glides and dances as #Joker. Subtle, but effective. pic.twitter.com/kR64MzZrTQ

Just watched The Joker trailer. I hate origin stories but “Mediocre man wants to be funny” is the realest villain explanation I’ve heard yet.

Hear that? That’s the sounds of thousands of Twitter accounts sneaky deleting year-old hot takes about the Joker movie.

The âJokerâ huh? So he commits crimes disguised as someone who is supposed to bring us joy?? DISGUSTING.

1. If it’s an interesting take on the character, a back story don’t hurt.

2. He’s literally a clown. What even are you talking about?
3. Joker is strong enough to stand on his own.
4. 70’s era Gotham actually sounds very VERY interesting to me.
I don’t get your complaints. pic.twitter.com/36ONyZ682A
