Opening Weekend is Here; Let’s See What DC’s Got
After months of Marvel buzz, it’s finally DC’s turn to take the reins with today’s release of the intensely anticipated “Shazam!”. With opening weekends having the power to make or break a superhero film, we’re wondering how Billy Batson will hold up and if the movie will take off with the force we’d expect from the godlike hero himself.
If you’re planning on taking a trip to the theatres to catch this hero on the big screen, you won’t be alone. According to reviews and recent industry predictions, it’s looking like “Shazam!” just might be among DCâs best offerings to date. Critics are raving about the movie’s successes, ranging from a smart use of humor, clever easter eggs for “hardcore fans”, some notable fight scenes and stellar acting, with Eric Eisenberg of cinemablend going so far as to say that itâs âthe role that Zachary Levi was born to playâ.
DC is finally building a solid run: #Shazam is a delight! Its familiar origin structure is forgivable because of all the new it brings to the table – primarily it’s gleeful, childlike enthusiasm, & heartfelt perspective on family. It’s also the role Zachary Levi was born to play. pic.twitter.com/5zXtfFDBGm

What’s even more promising (well…for the business buffs I guess) is that multiple articles are predicting a pretty solid box office return this weekend! According to Forbes, “Shazam!” has earned a promising $5.9 million in Thursday previews which, added to sneak preview profit, already makes $9.225 million heading into opening weekend! For reference, “Wonder Woman” made $11 million in it’s Thursday launch, “Aquaman” made $13 million and “Shazam!” has already surpassed Marvel’s “Captain America: The First Avenger” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse“. CinemaBlend says the high side of its global estimates could translate to a worldwide opening weekend of $170 million, which considering the movie only cost $90 million to make, would be a definite success. A box-office hit? We’ll have to wait and find out how audiences take to the film and if they agree with the generally positive reviews.
