Despite being the most popular character in Japan, in America he's hated just as much as he's adored, with both sides being very vocal depending where you look.
the fact that he still hasn't apologized to Midoriya for his years of unprovoked bullying is still a prevalent issue

Fans typically either like Jellal's development through the series, or dislike how he's essentially a Spotlight-Stealing Squad who makes Erza look like a Satellite Character whenever he's around. There's also a middle ground who considers him a great addition to the series, but one who's overstayed his welcome.

Many fans got turned off by him, due to being a hero who cannot help himself from having his way with men. Some think he redeemed himself by being heroic but others, especially some of the LGBT fanbase, think he should be cut off from the story.

Though this is largely a case of first impressions, as once his appearance is overlooked, many started liking him for his extreme Butt Monkey status and think he's hilarious. However, he also received flack from parents for his creepy behavior and not-so-healthy interest in girls, which led to the creators to toning him down in later seasons.

Ash's skill as a trainer and characterization has constantly been in flux throughout the history of the anime. The fans have been critical of this, citing that they can easily use the game characters to both avoid the drawn-out nature of Ash's journey.
