L plays such a prime role in the lighthearted darkness of Death Note. Also, shortly prior to his death, while Light forgets about the Death Note, the bonds of friendship begin to strengthen the two of them. The entire sequence of "L"s death is moving, with church bells and a choral piece so deep, it feels real.
