Nothing is quite as ugly as trying to use one medium of animation to try to mimic another. The Lego Movie, done in CG but trying to emulate stop motion, falls victim to this a lot.

The stop motion is not even close to being on par with Aardman or Laika. But for the story it intends to tell, it actually feels appropriate.

I get that it's trying to emulate that storybook illustration look. But sometimes the animation doesn't even look finished (when Ernest finds Celestine in the trash, for example, there's a portion of it that hasn't even been colored in).

Not just bad, but monotonous. Some characters do the same things over and over (like the mechanic who rolls a fresh cigarette every time he's on frame) to the point that you start to wonder if the animators were too terrified to animate anything else.

Old hand-drawn illustrated books are God's gift to struggling animation companies. They allow them to pretend the oversimplified character design is in homage to the source material.

People like to say it's retro, which means it looks old and dated on purpose. And, of course, claiming it's ugly on purpose is the standard go-to response for the head-up-the-arse artiste who can't admit when they produced something sub-par.
