The "rescue" is guessed to be completely made up by John Smith. He told about it after Pocahontas died (perhaps so she couldn't correct him). It is also suggested that the (almost) killing was a tradition, but if it was a tradition, then why would Pocahontas have rescued him? Hmm... suspicious!
