Originating from Japanese, emojis have been around since the late 90s. Emojis are so widely used that the “face with tears of joy” was deemed Word of the Year in 2015! There's also a book written entirely in emojis called “Emoji Dick”—a translation of the classic Herman Melville story, “Moby Dick”.
