Top 10 Most Expensive Celebrity Divorces

That’s a lot of moolah! Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 Most Expensive Celebrity Divorces.

For this list, we’re looking at a mix of celebrities and well-known business people and ranking them on the reported or alleged size of their divorce settlements as well as their celebrity status. However, we’ll only be including American celebs (or couples consisting of at least one American), meaning that people like Bernie & Slavica Ecclestone will not be included.

#10: James Cameron & Linda Hamilton
$50 million

Director James Cameron is the mastermind behind some of cinema’s highest grossing films, from “Titanic” to “Avatar”. It was while he was working on the “Terminator” franchise that he started dating actress Linda Hamilton. The two married in 1997, but only stayed together for eight months. They divorced in 1999 and Cameron was ordered to pay his ex-wife $50 million. In 2010, Hamilton opened up about her marriage, claiming that Cameron was “the kind of man who really would rather be at work with the mistress than at home with the wife.” She paints a picture of a workaholic whose first love is and always will be filmmaking. That might explain why he’s had five wives…

#9: Harrison Ford & Melissa Mathison
$85-118 million

A man who needs no introduction, Harrison Ford met his second wife, screenwriter Melissa Mathison, in the 1970s. The two married in 1983 and would go on to have two children together. Unfortunately, the couple started to grow apart in the late ‘90s and by 2000 it was clear that they were heading for a divorce. The two soon separated and were officially divorced in 2004. Mathison ultimately walked away with $85 million and royalties on Harrison’s films, though sources differ about whether these were from movies Ford made while they were married or on future “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones” projects. Some sources estimated that it may have been up to $118 million. Sadly, Mathison passed away in 2015 at the age of 65.

#8: Madonna & Guy Ritchie
$76-92 million

Madonna and director Guy Ritchie tied the knot in 2000 and stayed together for eight years before calling it quits in 2008. They had a son in 2000 and later adopted a second child in 2006. They also made a movie together, the critically unacclaimed box office disaster “Swept Away”, in 2002. Unlike most of the other entries on our list, when the time came for this celebrity couple to go their separate ways, it was Ritchie who got paid, not Madonna. While there have been a number of different reports as to the price tag of the divorce, none are official. However, it’s estimated that Ritchie received somewhere between $76 and $92 million from his pop star ex-wife. That’s a lot of dough.

#7: Steven Spielberg & Amy Irving
$100 million

Apparently, there’s a connection between filmmakers and massive divorce settlements. In 1989, acclaimed director Steven Spielberg divorced his wife of four years, actress Amy Irving. The two had previously dated from 1976 to 1980 before reuniting in 1984 and tying the knot in 1985. When things soured, the two were embroiled in a controversial divorce settlement, as a judge refused to honor their prenuptial agreement – which had been written on a napkin without Irving’s lawyer present. Irving later remarked that being married to Spielberg was like being “a politician’s wife”. She walked away with a cool $100 million.

#6: Tiger Woods & Elin Nordegren
$110 million

One of the most divisive athletes of the 21st century, Tiger Woods has experienced euphoric highs and embarrassing lows. After infamously crashing his car outside of his home in 2009, Woods fessed up to having had multiple affairs throughout his career. His wife, former model Elin Nordegren, was understandably shocked by the revelation. Despite claims that the two were attempting to work things out, Nordegren allegedly filed for divorce shortly after the car crash. The couple’s marriage was officially dissolved in August of 2010. Considering she was married to one of the most financially successful golfers on the planet, Nordegren’s estimated $110 million settlement almost feels a little low.

#5: Garth Brooks & Sandy Mahl
$125 million

Country music legend Garth Brooks married fellow songwriter Sandy Mahl in May of 1986. In the ensuing years, Brooks and Mahl would have three children together. Sadly, they ended up separating in 1999 and announced their plans to get divorced. When the dust settled in 2001, Mahl received an estimated settlement of $125 million. Garth Brooks started dating fellow country music singer Trisha Yearwood shortly thereafter and the two were married in 2005. Mahl on the other hand never remarried, but at least she has $125 million big ones to keep her company!

#4: Michael Jordan & Juanita Vanoy
$168 million

Michael Jordan is widely considered to be the greatest basketball player of all time. He played 15 seasons in the NBA and along the way signed a lucrative sponsorship deal with Nike that has since made him one of the richest people on the planet. He married Juanita Vanoy in 1989 and the two remained together for 17 years. They originally filed for divorce in 2002, but decided not to go through with it. However, their reconciliation was short lived and in 2006 they “mutually and amicably" agreed to divorce. In return, Vanoy received one of the largest divorce settlements of all time at the time, ending up with $168 million in her (hopefully) large pockets.

#3: Mel Gibson & Robyn Moore
$425 million

Throughout his decades-long career, Mel Gibson has been no stranger to controversy. His lowest moment came in 2006, when he reportedly made a slew of anti-Semitic comments after being pulled over for driving under the influence. This proved to be the final straw in an already rocky marriage with long-time wife Robyn Moore. According to Gibson, the couple separated the day after his infamous arrest, with Moore filing for divorce three years later. It was finalized in 2011, with Moore allegedly receiving a settlement of $425 million, the largest divorce payout in Hollywood history.

#2: Rupert Murdoch & Anna Maria Mann
$1.7 billion

Media baron Rupert Murdoch is one of the richest men on the planet, with an estimated net worth of $18.1 billion as of 2018. In 1967, he married Anna Torv and the two remained together for more than 30 years. However, as the old saying goes, all good things must come to an end. The couple divorced in 1999, with Torv receiving a $1.7 billion settlement, including a reported $110 million in cash. Before the ink was even dry, Murdoch had already moved on to his next wife, marrying Wendi Deng - who was 38 years his junior - just 17 days later. Not that Torv minded, as she also remarried within six months of the divorce to financier William Mann.

Before we unveil our number one pick, here are some honorable mentions:

Neil Diamond & Marcia Murphey
$150 million

Steven Wynn & Elaine Wynn
$955 million

Robert Johnson & Sheila Crump
$400 million

Kevin Costner & Cindy Silva
$80 million

Kelsey & Camille Grammer
$30 million

#1: Jeff Bezos & Mackenzie Tuttle
$68 billion

It stands to reason that if you’re the richest man on the planet then your divorce settlement is going to break some records. The dissolution of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and wife Mackenzie Tuttle’s marriage will likely result in the largest divorce settlement of all time. Bezos is estimated to be worth more than $137 billion. Seeing as how they reside in Washington, a state where residents who file for divorce are entitled to a 50/50 split, Tuttle stands to receive a payout of roughly $68 billion - if they don’t have a prenup stating differently, that is. Together since 1993, the couple came to the decision amicably. Good thing too, because who knows where the chips would have fallen had things ended in tears.
