For this list, we’re taking a look at origin stories, sequels, crossovers, and other plotlines we want to see after the fourth “Avengers” movie, which marks the end of a 22-movie arc.
#10: “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”
As of now, a third “Guardians of the Galaxy” is one of the few films that’s been confirmed for the MCU’s fourth phase. Little is currently known about the project outside of the fact that James Gunn is returning to the direct and the plot will take place sometime after “Avengers: Infinity War.” Speaking of which, that epic crossover is sure to have a few game-changing moments for the Guardians, especially if Gamora and Thanos have a family reunion of sorts. While plot details for “Vol. 3” have understandably been kept under wraps, Gunn has hinted that the film will “expand the cosmic universe” and “set up the next 10, 20 years of Marvel movies.”
#9: “Silver Surfer”
In a deal that’s already gone down in entertainment history, Disney purchased 21st Century Fox for $52.4 billion in December 2017. This opened the door for several Marvel characters under Fox’s control to finally join the MCU. One of the many comic book icons we hope to see soon is the Silver Surfer, who previously appeared on the big screen alongside the Fantastic Four in 2007. While that interpretation left something to be desired, we believe Marvel can do the shiny space traveler justice. As mentioned before, the cosmic universe is already to set to expand, which would not only provide leeway for the Silver Surfer to drop in, but the godlike Galactus as well.
#8: “Doctor Strange 2”
“Doctor Strange” was both a financial and critical hit, earning an Oscar nomination for its mind-bending visual effects. So the fact that Marvel hasn’t announced a follow-up already is – for lack of a better word – strange. That’s not to say the Sorcerer Supreme has been MIA, as he popped up in “Thor: Ragnarok” and plays a key role in “Infinity War.” While there’s still no official confirmation on “Doctor Strange 2,” director Scott Derrickson has pitched a couple ideas, most notably expressing his desire to have Nightmare as the sequel’s antagonist. Much like the Joker in “The Dark Knight,” Derrickson believes that Nightmare is a villain who could really push our hero to his limits.
#7: “Secret Wars”
From “The Avengers,” to “Captain America: Civil War,” to “Thor: Ragnarok,” Marvel has repeatedly proven that it’s one of the few studios that truly understands how to execute a crossover. What’s even more impressive is how the filmmakers keep finding new ways to top themselves with each team up. As big as “Infinity War” and “Avengers 4” might be, a “Secret Wars” adaptation has the potential to be even bigger. In the original limited series, an entity known as the Beyonder brings together the likes of Spider-Man, the Hulk, and other Marvel icons to duke it out against a team of super villains on Battleworld. The question is how many of our favorite heroes will still be alive after Phase Three?
#6: “Black Panther 2”
After T'Challa made his long-awaited MCU debut in “Captain America: Civil War,” fans were more eager than ever to see a standalone “Black Panther” movie. With A-list talent like Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong'o, and Michael B. Jordan attached, it became clear that director Ryan Coogler was assembling something special. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has stated that “Black Panther” is an especially “important” step towards the third and fourth “Avengers” movies. With that in mind, it’d be incredibly surprising if the king of Wakanda only got one solo outing. As for the sequel, there’s no shortage of great source material to borrow from: maybe something from Ta-Nehisi Coates best-selling, critically acclaimed modern run?
#5: “Deadpool”
Thanks to Ryan Reynolds’ charismatic performance and a well-deserved R-rating, “Deadpool” became one of the most successful superhero movies ever. Now that this insanely popular character is in Disney’s possession, several questions have been raised. For starters, should the family-friendly Disney take Deadpool in a new direction or stay the course? Well, here’s an idea: Reynolds should continue to play Deadpool in standalone adventures laced with profanity, sex jokes, and graphic violence. Then if/when Reynolds reprises the role in an “Avengers” movie, have Deadpool joke about the fact that he needs to keep things PG-13. It might not always make sense continuity-wise, but the Merc with a Mouth has never been big on that anyway.
#4: “Thor 4”
Where the original “Thor” was a solid introduction to the God of Thunder, the reception to “Thor: The Dark Word” was more mixed. “Thor: Ragnarok” practically felt like a reboot, though, upping the comedy, the action, and the character development. Since Asgard’s future is still up in the air, we’d love to see a successor to “Ragnarok” that captures the same wit, charm, and all-around awesomeness. The film wouldn’t even necessarily need to center on Thor per se. It’d be just as interesting if the story shifted focus to Loki, Valkyrie, or even good old Korg. As long as director Taika Waititi is on board, we’d be in store for another wild ride.
#3: “Spider-Man: Homecoming 2”
Given the conflict between Disney and Sony, it looked like Spider-Man would never team up with the Avengers. Against all the odds, however, Spidey got to participate in “Civil War” and received a proper homecoming the following year. What has us especially hyped for the “Homecoming” sequel is that it’ll be the first MCU movie to follow “Avengers 4.” The end of Phase 3 is certain to shake things up and those changes should be reflected in Spider-Man’s next solo adventure. This film won’t only help set the tone for Phase 4, but also mark a major turning point for Peter Parker as he enters his junior year. July 5, 2019 can’t come soon enough.

We’re not sure what’s more surreal: that the Fantastic Four may finally cross paths with the Avengers or that Steve Rogers and Johnny Storm were both played by Christ Evans – still weird. In any case, it’s about time Marvel’s First Family got a quality big screen adaptation. Although Roger Corman’s unreleased take on the Fantastic Four set the bar pretty low, Fox dropped the ball with their 2005 version and a 2015 reboot that was somehow even worse. Mister Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch, and the Thing should finally get the treatment they deserve under Marvel’s care. Maybe Disney could even enlist Brad Bird, seeing how he basically directed a “Fantastic Four” movie already.

Of all the properties Disney acquired from Fox, “X-Men” could have the greatest impact. As is the case with Deadpool, though, it’s unclear how mutants will fit into the equation. If the X-Men join the MCU, would their established film franchise be rebooted? Since “Logan” was Hugh Jackman’s swan song, now’s as good a time as any to recast Wolverine. On the other hand, James McAvoy’s Professor X and Michael Fassbender’s Magneto would be missed, but with 2018’s “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” marking their last 4th X-Men film, it may be just the right time to take the franchise in a new direction.
