There are a lot of great superhero games that don't focus on Spider-Man or Batman. Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our top picks for superhero games that don't follow on the stories of Marvel and DC's most famous characters. Our countdown of superhero games where Batman or Spider-Man aren't the main character includes “Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy” (2021), “Lego DC Super-Villains” (2018), “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge” (2022), and more!

Welcome to WatchMojo, and today, we’re counting down our top picks for the Top 10 Superhero Games that have nothing to do with Spider-Man or the Dark Knight. Let’s give the other heroes the spotlight for once, eh?

#10: “The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction” (2005)

The best way to go about making a Hulk video game is to just let the player go. Let them run around, cause mayhem, smash things, roar, thunderclap, and all the fun things that make the Hulk an unstoppable force. That is precisely what “Ultimate Destruction” did. Well, sort of. While still linear in design, “Ultimate Destruction” gave you a wealth of abilities and objects to smash as you fought against soldiers, mechs, and more. Why we haven’t gotten another game like this is anyone’s guess.

#9: “Lego DC Super-Villains” (2018)

The 20 Best Lego Video Games Ever

For a time, the Lego games were suffering from some serious fatigue. Leave it to “Lego DC Super Villains” to give it a good shot in the arm! Whereas other Lego games saw you playing as the hero, “Super Villains” saw you play as baddies like Lex Luthor and the Joker as they fought against an imposter Justice League. Not only that, but you could customize your very own supervillain with a multitude of abilities, AND they had a role in the story where they would earn even MORE powers! Combine this with a digestible and fun open world, and you have yourself one of the best Lego games ever made and one of the best superhero games ever made.

#8: “Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2” (2009)

We would love to have put the first MUA on this list, but when looking at the original two games, the sequel did things way better. For starters, you had a compelling take on the Civil War storyline that was almost like having two games in one as you played one faction or the other. Then, you have the ability to mix powers between heroes to deal a ton of damage to enemies. That mixed with the improvement in writing, animation, controls, and technical performance is what made MUA2 such a fun romp.

#7: “Deadpool” (2013)

The Merc With a Mouth had gone on way too long without a video game. So when the “Deadpool” game finally became a reality, we were hooked. Just about everything featured is what we could want in a Deadpool game; the hack-&-slash combat mixed with third-person shooting, the teleport and parry mechanics, the profanity, the dumb gimmicks like blowing up a bouncy castle, the brutal nature of your attacks… It’s enough to make any fan cry tears of joy, which is why it is so heartbreaking to know that the game is not commercially available at the time of this video.

#6: “Infamous 2” (2011)

Honestly, you can have a blast playing any of the “Infamous” games. The first game, “Second Son”, “Festival of Blood”, “First Light” - they’re all spectacular. But why does the second game get the spot here? Well, it’s in how they tied Karma closer to the combat. Good and Evil Karma can grant you access to unique abilities that can change the way you play the game. In other words, you have a good excuse to play the game a second time and shoot for the powers you didn’t get to play and see the other ending.

#5: “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge” (2022)

The 10 BEST Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Video Games

Look, we’re playing loose with the “superhero” angle and just shooting for classic comic books, but “Shredder’s Revenge” really is worthy of being here. For years, “Turtles in Time” was the TMNT game to end all TMNT games. But after playing “Shredder’s Revenge” with its massive multiplayer support and deep arcadey combat system…it takes the crown, no questions asked. Not only does it evoke the same tone and fun as the older TMNT games, it also comes with plenty of game modes to keep you playing and replaying. You get a ton of bang for your buck, and it never gets stale!

#4: “Marvel’s Midnight Suns” (2022)

Marvel Vs DC: Which Games Are Better?

Just because it utilizes cards does not mean you should stick your nose in the air and turn it away. “Marvel’s Midnight Suns” is absolutely fantastic in the most unexpected ways. For half of the game, you get to explore the Abbey, uncover its mysteries, and hang out with some of your favorite heroes to unlock new moves or passive abilities. As for the other half? Intense battles where you have to make the most of limited moves to pull off devastating attacks and bring down Hydra! On top of that, the DLC that adds in Deadpool, Venom, Morbius, and Storm is incredibly fun as it introduces brand new mechanics that you can carry over into the base game.

#3: “Viewtiful Joe” (2003)

Thought we were limiting things to Marvel and DC primarily? Well, we’d be remiss if “Viewtiful Joe” wasn’t on here. Yes, we know the game can be grueling to brand new players as it does not play like other beat ‘em ups. But once you get a grasp on the controls and open yourself up to the challenge - good lord, is it fun!! “Viewtiful Joe” is a pure adrenaline rush as you pummel dudes with stylish attacks and jam out to an incredible soundtrack. Capcom, what’s going on? Why isn’t this available to play on modern hardware??

#2: “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy” (2021)

Also in:

The 10 BEST Marvel Video Games

It is a real crime how many dismissed “Guardians of the Galaxy” because of the embarrassing failure that was “Marvel’s Avengers”. We get that many folks wanted to play as their favorite Guardian, whether it was Gamora, Rocket, Drax, or Groot. However, what Eidos-Montreal did here was stellar. We’ll admit that the humor isn’t for some folks, yet the combat, set pieces, and exploration are why it's worthy of your time. There’s a ton of satisfaction in commanding the Guardians and pulling off hard hitting attacks in perfect execution. Please, if you haven’t, go give this a shot.

Before we reveal our top pick, here are a few Honorable Mentions…

Funny how superheroes make up half of the game. Even so, there is no denying that MvC2 is the best superhero game out there. We know Spidey is in it, but the spotlight is shed on more heroes than just him! If you want a team of Captain America, Venom, and Cable, you can do that. If you want Hulk, Psylocke, and Doctor Doom, you can do that. Or if you want Magneto fighting alongside Jill Valentine and Mega Man, guess what - you can do that, too! Every combination of characters is available to you and can lead to new playstyles. The world is your oyster here, and it's why it gets the top spot for us.

What do you think is the best superhero not featuring Batman or Spidey? Let us know in the comments below!
