Street Fighter X Tekken: Everything You Should Know

Street Fighter X Tekken: Everything You Should Know
VOICE OVER: Dan
Developed by Capcom, this hybrid fighter is centered on a ludicrous plot device. Namely, that the cast of both franchises have begun descending on the site of a meteor crash, where a box has been found called “Pandora.” This artifact releases a liquid that supercharges anyone who fights near it. Yes, it's an awkward setup, but it lines things up nicely for some wicked seizure inducing action. Street Fighter X Tekken: Everything You Should Know

Two of the biggest fighting franchises collide. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’ll be exploring everything you should know about Street Fighter X Tekken.

Developed by Capcom, this hybrid fighter is centered on a ludicrous plot device. Namely, that the cast of both franchises have begun descending on the site of a meteor crash.

These characters include members of the authorities, M.Bison’s Shadoloo terrorist organization and the Mishima Zaibatsu, formally known as the Tekken Corporation.

The force bringing them all together is a box contained within the meteorite, called “Pandora.” It releases a liquid that supercharges anyone who fights near it. Yes, it’s an awkward setup, but it lines things up nicely for some wicked seizure inducing action.

Even though gamers have become accustomed to three-dimensional combat in the Tekken series, as well as the 4th installment of Street Fighter, this game goes for an old school 2D layout. It also controls like Street Fighter series, the result of Capcom having developed the entire game without any assistance from Namco.

What’s interesting is that this fighter is based on two-on-two tag team matches, and it only takes one character to be knocked out to lose a round. Thankfully, you can tag in or out with your partner at any time during the match.

The game also incorporates a three-part super meter. This fills during combat and powers EX moves, which are supercharged versions of ordinary special attacks.

Players can also power up a super-tag. This string of combos will end with your partner tagged into the action to continue the onslaught. There is even a desperation move called “Pandora”, which is only available when you are down to a quarter of your health bar. This allows you to switch with your partner, giving him an evil glowing look for a limited time, complete with a full super meter and extra power boost.

Another thing that’s new and radically different is the ability to equip gems. These give you short-lived upgrades. They can be toggled to give bonuses to your offensive and defensive moves, as well as your special abilities. Each has its own activation condition and drawback, and only three gems can be equipped at a time.

As far as the character roster is concerned, it’s bustling with over 19 champions from each franchise. These include favorites such iconic characters as Ryu and Ken, as well as Kazuya and Nina. Of course, it also includes several lesser-known fighters, such as Poison, and sets up for hilarious battle between such characters as Kuma and Zangief. There are also several console specific guests, such as a joke interpretation of Mega Man.

Aside from the main competition, there are various game types to select from. These include “Pandora Mode”, in which you sacrifice your partner for a powerful strength boost. “Scramble Mode” allows four players to fight together on-screen at the same time in a hectic battle royal. Finally, players can hone their skills in an online training area called “Briefing Room.”

Street Fighter X Tekken is available for the PS3, PS Vita, Xbox 360 and the PC. It more than just a bigger and flashier version of Street Fighter IV, as it adds an X-Factor when fighting in the form of tag team action, tag combos and power-up gems. Interestingly, it will be followed up by Namco’s own interpretation of the crossover, aptly titled “Tekken X Street Fighter.”
