While clothes do not make the man, they sure as hell improve his appearance. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’re counting down our picks for the top 10 best-dressed TV characters. For this list we’ve looked at both male and female TV characters, past and present and have judged them by their wardrobes.

#10: Patrick Jane “The Mentalist” (2008-)

Anything but plain, this Jane really knows how to rock the three-piece suit. On CBS’s crime drama “The Mentalist,” Patrick Jane, played by Simon Baker, breathes new life into the classic ensemble – even though he looks perpetually rumpled. Likely once far more put-together, Jane now couples his signature vests with rolled up sleeves to give himself that cool and relaxed vibe, while the tie-less look matches well with his custom-fitted outfits. Add a pair of scruffy brown Chelsea boots to the look, and you’ve got yourself the perfect Patrick Jane ensemble.

#9: Fish Mooney “Gotham” (2014-)

More shark than fish, nightclub owner and crime boss Fish Mooney, played by Jada Pinkett Smith, has a wardrobe just as dark and dangerous as her character. Tough and edgy, Mooney can usually be seen decked out in sky-high heels, designer-inspired skin tight dresses paired with metal or leather accents, and amazing statement jewelry. Her black pixie short hair and pink-dyed tips, glittery eye shadow, and long manicured claws complete her fierce don’t-mess-with-me look. This is one lady you don’t want to cross.

#8: Serena van der Woodsen “Gossip Girl” (2007-12)

When she’s not rocking her school uniform in any number of inventive ways, this Upper Eastsider can be seen in a parade of drool-worthy outfits. Flanked by her equally well-dressed privileged friends and sometimes foes, particularly Queen Bee Blair Waldorf, S’s style is part vintage, part rocker chick, and part boho. She looks just as good in sexy designer cocktail dresses as in a pair of skinny jeans, tank top, cropped jacket, and boots. Simple and chic, this Upper East Side it girl is a true fashion standout.

#7: Lady Mary Crawley “Downton Abbey” (2010-)

Whether it’s for a meal, to join the hunting party, or go to a Jazz club, Lady Mary is always appropriately dressed to impress. With a polished look, she is as stylish in tweed as she is in a tea-party shift. From the post Edwardian fashion of the first season to the flapper girl style of the later seasons, Lady Mary always looks fabulous. It’s no surprise that the huge success of this period drama has taken the fashion world by storm – the Downton-inspired look has been popping up on runways, in magazines, and in department stores.

#6: Olivia Pope “Scandal” (2012-)

Now that’s what closing multimillion-dollar deals looks like.

#4: Joan Harris [née Holloway] “Mad Men” (2007-15)

More Monroe than Moss, “Mad Men”’s office sex-kitten Joan Holloway is hard to ignore. Her voluptuous curves and retro tight outfits have made her stand out at SC&P. Dressed in high-waisted pencil skirts, sheath dresses, knit sweaters and always bright colors, Joanie exudes sexiness and confidence. Her outfits are always impeccably tailored, and usually paired with brooches and scarves, because as Joan herself has said “men love scarves.” She also contributed to the “Mad Men” fashion renaissance that has sent many a fashionista scouring second-hand stores in the hopes of finding the perfect Joan-like ensembles.
