VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton WRITTEN BY: Garrett Alden
These are the characters that turned Bill Hader into a household name. For this list, we'll be going over the greatest original characters played by Bill Hader on “Saturday Night Live.” Our countdown of the top Bill Hader SNL characters includes Brady Trunk, Stefon, Herb Welch, and more!

#10: Brady Trunk

Alongside Anastasia Sticks, played by Kristen Wiig, Brady Trunk was the co-host of a Hollywood news show called “Hollywood Dish”. Together, they’d interview celebrities, usually the host of “SNL” that day, in these recurring segments. Trunk and Sticks typically spend the interview mugging at the camera, with the excuse of not speaking when their guest is speaking. They also tend to goad the celebrity into saying or doing something embarrassing which they use as a focal point of their show later. Lastly, Trunk has a habit of spitting out his drink all over Sticks. The character is a brilliant parody of the stereotypical smarmy hosts of such entertainment news shows, and Hader’s facial expressions and chemistry with Wiig make Brady Trunk a blast to watch.

#9: Third Merryville Brother

Top 10 Times Bill Hader Broke the SNL Cast

The Merryville Brothers are a trio of animatronic singing robots who appear at a variety of fair rides. The robots usually come to life and threaten bodily harm to the occupants of the car they encounter, while one of the two remains oblivious or skeptical. While the host and Taran Killam play the two main brothers, Bill Hader chimes in, literally, as the third brother with a note on a triangle at the end of the song. Hader may not get as much screen time as the other brothers, but he still manages to steal the spotlight. Who can forget such memorable moments like him wielding a chainsaw or giving one of the passengers a belly rub?

#8: Tony Dinato

Tony Soprano VS Walter White

One half of a gay couple from New Jersey, Tony Dinato and his partner Vinny Zaccone appear as recurring guests on “Weekend Update.” Bill Hader and Fred Armisen have done similar characters from other states, like Maine, but this is the standout. Tony and Vinny are a bit stereotypical, but rather than being caricatures of gay men, they’re stereotypes of New Jersey men, who also happen to be gay. The duo often discuss news stories involving gay issues, such as “don’t ask, don’t tell” in the military or gay marriage legalization. That is, when they’re not making eyes at each other. Hader’s chemistry with Armisen is fantastic; his “’eys!” and “ohs!” are sure to leave you in stitches.

#7: Greg the Alien

Sorry, we’ve just been informed that Greg is not, in fact, an alien. Our mistake. No, wait, he totally is! The co-host of a sports show, Greg is blatantly an alien masquerading as a man. He doesn’t have eyebrows, he has wings and a tail, and he usually just parrots what other people say. Bill Hader is such a chameleon, that he plays an incredibly convincing unconvincing human. His awkward screeching, weird facial expressions, and generally alien demeanor are at once hilarious and kind of creepy. If Hader weren’t such a prominent actor, we’d genuinely be worried that he’s here to take over the Earth.

#6: Vinny Vedecci

Based on a guy Bill Hader once stood behind at the movies, Vinny Vedecci is the enthusiastic host of a fictional Italian interview program. Vinny barely speaks English, and Hader barely speaks Italian, instead using a kind of pseudo-Italian gibberish that still sounds very convincing – to non-Italian speakers, at least. Still, plenty of Italians reportedly find he and his show eerily accurate to older Italian TV. His interviews with American celebrities usually feature misunderstanding based on the language barrier, as well as plenty of over-the-top Italian stereotypes among him and his crew. Hader as Vinny is just so much fun that you find yourself smiling along with him.

#5: Devin

“The Californians” is a recurring soap opera parody. Most of the cast wears blond wigs and speaks in borderline incomprehensible Valley girl accents. They also seem obsessed with describing efficient car routes on the state’s freeways. Hader plays Devin, a handyman, and something of a lothario, who has had an on/off relationship with his best friend Stuart’s girlfriend Karina. While everyone in “The Californians” is hysterical, Hader’s dopey expressions—as well as his inability to contain his laughter —makes him a definite highlight. We may not know “whud-Devin-iz-dyuing-here,” but we’re glad he is! [imitate Stuart’s recurring line “whudder-yu-dyuing-here?”]

#4: Vince Blight

Bill Hader has played a few game show hosts on “SNL,” but he shines brightest as Vince Blight. Blight hosts many different shows, from guessing the issues faced by a hypothetical troubled teen in a Lifetime movie, to guessing the name of peripheral acquaintances. Although contestants are usually the highlight of “SNL” game show sketches, Blight is entertaining all on his own. He seems to love tormenting and embarrassing the people on his shows, like the grinning child of Satan and an internet troll. A self-described agent of chaos, Vince Blight delights in making people squirm and we’re delighted by his fiendish glee.

#3: Herb Welch

A veteran news reporter for WXPD News, Herb Welch should really have retired by now. Older than dirt and clearly done with his job, Herb is woefully out of touch, both with political correctness and with reality. the sketches usually feature Herb forgetting where he is, why he’s interviewing someone, or even what year it is. Herb is also quite enthusiastic with his use of a microphone, getting up close and personal with it. He’s also fond of faking his own death, only to snap out of it so he can sucker punch someone who has insulted him. When Herb Welch does finally kick the bucket, it will be a sad day for comedy indeed. WXPD News on the other hand...will probably be better off, though.

#2: Anthony Peter Coleman

Top 10 Kate & Anthony Moments on Bridgerton

Puppets can be a great way to both entertain and explore feelings that are difficult to express. Private First-Class Anthony Peter Coleman subscribes to...well, his own unique approach. While attending several puppet classes, the disturbed war veteran uses his puppet, Tony, to recall the disturbing details of his time in Grenada. The line between Anthony and Tony blurs, with Tony showing the ability to blow cigarette smoke, and getting a little too into a make-out session with another puppet. While a lot of what Anthony says is intense and frequently dark, Hader sells every minute of it and makes us laugh out loud every time.

#1: Stefon

Top 10 Hilarious Stefon SNL Moments

If you’re looking for Bill Hader’s best “SNL” character, then look no further! Bill Hader’s hottest character is Stefon. This guy has everything – an encyclopedic knowledge of New York nightlife, tattoo shirts, various running gags and a totally understandable crush on Seth Meyers! Stefon is a frequent Weekend Update guest and usually spends his time recommending increasingly bizarre clubs and hotspots for tourists to visit. Bill Hader’s nervous energy is endlessly entertaining, and even if his advice follows a formula, the various outlandish things he lists are so funny that each of his segments is a crack up! Hader can’t keep a straight face, but he and Stefon are guaranteed to set you giggling – behind your hands or otherwise!
