The “Castlevania” series is one of the legends of game history. This installment dared to take the franchise in a new direction, with interesting results. It was originally announced as being independent of the series, and it dispenses with RPG elements in favor of more action, bringing it into the hack and slash genre. While this game is still divisive within the Castlevania fanbase, for what it is, it’s certainly a fantastic adventure.

#9: “Brütal Legend” (2009)

This heavy metal-inspired title cranks the volume up to 11 for a one-of-a-kind hack and slash experience by combining it with Real Time Strategy elemets. As Eddie, the Jack Black starring roadie who fights evil overlords with a battle axe and a Flying V guitar. The clever sense of humor and the cartoonish graphics create a game world unlike any other. The open world design with its many sidequests will keep you occupied for hours.

Battle was a hard thing to get right on the Wii, but this was one title that managed to pull it off. The Wiimote katana swinging makes for some of the best swordplay on the console. When you face off against the intense bosses in crazy situations, you’ll be glad you have the katana on your side. The gorgeous visuals and engaging story complement the excellent gameplay.

Despite its stupid name and taking elements from the classic “Metal Gear” series, it forges its own path by replacing the reliance on stealth with frenetic action. The cyborg soldiers and countless other types of enemies you’ll face will try to stop you. Don’t worry though, the game’s Blade Mode will help you out by allowing you to target exactly where you want to aim the sword you use to fight them.

#6: “Onimusha 3” (2004)

If demon-fighting Japanese mythological creatures in modern day Paris is your thing, is your thing, you’ll love this title. The game allows you to use multiple weapons to fight enemies and absorb their energy to make your arms stronger, so you’ll have the tools you need to take on your foes as you fight through a historical battle in the modern day.

This game doesn’t stray much from the core of the hack and slash genre—you choose a character, pick weapons to arm him with, and send him to fight against whoever gets in his way. But the intelligence of the AI and the sheer amount of enemies you have to fight makes this game exceptional. The historically accurate ancient Chinese settings and complex character progression system give it a surprising depth.

Life’s a witch. Maybe that’s not quite the saying, but screw it we’re making it a saying. The title character and protagonist who you control is a witch who uses magic, her hair, and weapons equipped to her hands and feet to take on the angelic opponents who get in her way. The sheer variety of attacks and combos you can use make the combat system a joy.
