Top 10 Movie Characters Who Become a Couple in the Sequels

Top 10 Movie Characters Who Become a Couple in the Sequels

These are the Top 10 Movie characters who become a couple in the sequels! For this list, we'll be going over the movie characters that appeared in a previous film apart, before getting together in a later one! We've included couples like Melman and Gloria from “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa”, Jim and Michelle from “American Pie 2”, Tony and Pepper from “Iron Man 2” and more!

#10: James "Jim" Levenstein & Michelle Flaherty

“American Pie 2” (2001)

Also in:

Sometimes becoming a couple happens in a non-traditional fashion, and these two characters are definitely unconventional. Jim Levenstein and Michelle Flaherty sleep together during the first film, but they do not pursue a relationship, as Jim has his heart set on foreign exchange student Nadia and Michelle seems perfectly happy to have a one night stand. The sequel sees Jim returning to Michelle for advice about sex, but the two of them develop feelings for each other instead. This culminates in a public, and embarrassing, declaration of love… at Band Camp naturally.

#9: Melman the Giraffe & Gloria the Hippopotamus

“Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” (2008)

Melman is a nervous giraffe, while Gloria is a self-confident, outgoing hippo. The two of them seem quite mismatched at first glance (both in terms of their traits and species), but their personalities balance out. Despite there being little indication in the first film that there’s any attraction between them, the second film features Melman revealing his crush on Gloria in a moment of panic, later telling her date to treat her well; ultimately leading Gloria to realize her own feelings for her friend and the two becoming an adorable couple.

#8: Jesse & Céline

“Before Midnight” (2013)

Two strangers who meet on a train in Vienna, Jesse and Céline engage in a brief romance in the first film, before reuniting 9 years later in the second movie. Although the middle instalment’s ending is ambiguous, “Before Midnight” reveals that they have become a couple and had children in the interim between films. The golden years of their relationship appear to have taken place off screen though, as they engage in a heated argument during this movie. They seem ready to give their relationship another chance when the credits roll, but then again, in this series, you never know where the next film will find them.

#7: Bernard & Bianca

“The Rescuers Down Under” (1990)

In another odd couple pairing, Bernard is a mouse janitor turned titular Rescuer, while Miss Bianca is his partner, who is significantly more cultured, adventurous and fancy. The duo clearly hit it off in the first film, complimenting each other well; one might even say that sparks were flying. They don’t officially get together until the sequel though, and not without incident. Bernard repeatedly attempts to propose marriage to Bianca but is constantly interrupted by various occurrences. Thankfully, in the end, he throws caution to the wind and blurts it out rather than delay any longer.

#6: Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III & Astrid Hofferson

“How to Train Your Dragon 2” (2014)

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III and Astrid Hofferson have known each other since they were children, and while Hiccup has definitely crushed on her, she only starts to notice him when his unprecedented training of a dragon brings out a new side of the young Viking. While the two kiss at the end of the first film, the sequel sees them in an established relationship, even betrothed to one another! Unlike some of the other entries where this happens, the moments in between are nicely filled in by the “Dragons” TV series, which details the progression of their relationship.

#5: Tony Stark & Pepper Potts

“Iron Man 2” (2010)

Also in:

Bruce Wayne Vs Tony Stark

Tech magnate turned superhero Tony Stark has always had a spark-filled relationship with his girl Friday-turned-CEO, Pepper Potts. Their banter is fantastic, and Pepper helps ground her sarcastic and outlandish boss… sometimes, at any rate. Although the two of them clearly have feelings for one another, built on mutual trust, and the aforementioned banter, it isn’t until the conclusion of “Iron Man 2” that they start a relationship; kissing after defeating the film’s villain. While they have their ups and downs, theirs is one of the longest lasting loves in the MCU.

#4: Katniss Everdeen & Peeta Mellark

“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2” (2015)

Contestants in the eponymous games from the same district, Peeta has had a crush on Katniss for years, though the games are the first time Katniss truly notices him. The pair team up to succeed and survive, even playing at a romance for the cameras. Although the feelings are initially one-sided on Peeta’s part, they gradually become mutual through their shared experiences and the growing revolution. Ultimately, after many trials, including some brainwashing that nearly ruins everything, Katniss and Peeta settle down and have kids in the final film’s epilogue.

#3: Peter Parker & Mary Jane Watson

“Spider-Man 2” (2004)

Also in:

Comparing All The Peter Pan Movies

These two neighbors have lived next to each other for years, and while Peter Parker has pined for Mary Jane Watson, her own feelings only bloom once great power thrusts great responsibility upon the former. While she attempts to return his affections by the end of the first film, he decides to reject her in order to protect her from the kinds of threats he faces. However, “Spider-Man 2” sees her become involved anyway, and both their feelings persist, despite MJ’s engagement to another man. Ultimately, shared danger leads to Peter revealing his identity to her and she decides to leave her fiancée (unfortunately... at the altar), to be with Peter.

#2: Ron Weasley & Hermione Granger

“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2” (2011)

Also in:

Top 10 Movie Characters That Sequels Forgot

The two best friends of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger are very different from one another and frequently argue throughout the series. But you know what they say: opposites attract. Their mutual crush builds throughout the franchise. Ron and Hermione each become particularly aggravated when the other is in a relationship with someone else, but it isn’t until the final film that they’re able to act on their feelings - following a brush with death that makes them realize what matters most. And given that they’ve gotten married and had children in the epilogue, it’s clear that their love is meant to last. Thankfully, the boy who lived similarly finds love with Ginny Weasley.

#1: Han Solo & Leia Organa

“Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back” (1980)

Also in:

Top 20 Needlessly Sexualized Movie Characters

Anakin and Padme thankfully took two films to get together, but they can’t hold a candle to the first Star Wars romance. Rebel leader Princess Leia Organa and smuggler Han Solo are a bickering pair who rarely agree. However, within their iconic exchanges runs an undercurrent of attraction. Their banter is a highlight of the franchise, but it isn’t until near the conclusion of “The Empire Strikes Back” that Leia makes her famed declaration of love, which is followed by Han’s equally famous response: “I know.” You could argue that they don’t really become a couple until “Return of the Jedi,” but the l-o-v-e and lack of Ewoks clinched it for us.
