Top 10 Movie Couples Who Were Different Species

Top 10 Movie Couples Who Were Different Species
VOICE OVER: Kirsten Ria Squibb WRITTEN BY: Francesca LaMantia
Love finds a way and these interspecies movie couples are proof. Our countdown includes "Beauty and the Beast," "Star Trek," "Splash," and more!

#10: Mavis Dracula & Jonathan "Johnny" Loughran “Hotel Transylvania” franchise (2012-)

Johnny is just an average human guy looking for a little adventure, and Mavis is a vampire raised with fellow monsters thinking that the human world is the scary one. Though they’ve both been predisposed to fear each other, there is an undeniable zing between them when they meet. Their relationship is a cool twist on the vampire-human forbidden love story. Though they initially have quite a few obstacles to overcome due to worries their different natures may upset Mavis’ family and friends, they end up uniting their worlds. They even have an adorable interspecies son.

#9: Jake Sully & Neytiri “Avatar” (2009)

Top 10 Movie Moments That Made Us Love Jake Gyllenhaal

Zoe Saldana knows a thing or two about star-crossed lovers from different worlds (or planets!); after all, Gamora’s love story with half-human/half-Celestial Peter Quill in the MCU made us believe in the power of pelvic sorcery. In “Avatar,” though Jake Sully looks like one of the Na’vi while operating his avatar, it’s Jake the human that falls in love with Neytiri. She shows him the overwhelming beauty of Pandora, teaches him how to fly, welcomes him into her people, and all around makes him a better person. He went from a selfish, brooding, ex-Marine who was working as a spy for humans, to the man who, against his own self-interests, helped Neytiri save the planet. Talk about the power of love.

#8: Madison & Allen Bauer “Splash” (1984)

After encountering her as a child, Allen falls in love with a mermaid who names herself Madison when they meet again as adults twenty years later. And as these things go, he finds himself having to protect her from the shady scientists bent on experimenting on her. The funny thing is, it would be easy to write off this love story as simple infatuation between Allen and a woman he shared a previous intense experience with - but Allen doesn’t even know that this is the same girl from his childhood for most of the film. It’s more than just the fantasy of the thing. He falls in love with the real her before even finding out the truth.

#7: Spock & Nyota Uhura “Star Trek” (2009)

The original Star Trek series gave us one of American TV’s first ever interracial kisses with Captain Kirk and Lieutenant Uhura. The 2009 movie took it a step further with the interspecies relationship between the half-Vulcan Spock and Uhura. Fans of the original can relate to Kirk the first time he saw them together. That facial expression pretty much says it all. But this relationship serves as much more than just shock value. Spock and Uhura are both intelligent and mature beings, unlike Kirk, who can be quite pompous and immature. The expectation might have been for Uhura and Kirk to get together, especially based on his behavior towards her throughout the movie, but this Vulcan/Human combination actually makes way more sense.

#6: Kermit the Frog & Miss Piggy “The Muppets” franchise (1955-)

This couple is nothing short of legendary. Kermit and Miss Piggy have been in an on-again off-again relationship since the “The Muppet Show.” She knows what (or who) she wants, and he’s more of your Joe Everyman. And somehow, they make it work. Their love story is chronicled throughout multiple TV shows, numerous movies, and several decades. At this point, everyone knows they are endgame, but it’s still always fun to watch their many ups and downs. Here’s hoping we still have many more decades to go. We never get tired of watching their love grow.

#5: Beast & Belle “Beauty and the Beast” (1991)

Beauty and the Beast (2017) - Top 10 Facts!

The Disney Renaissance had some great couples, like Ariel and Eric in “The Little Mermaid.” But our favorite bookworm and brooding cursed prince are unlike many of the classic Disney Princess love stories in that Belle and Beast don’t fall in love at first sight. Actually, they hate each other at first. Well, who could blame them: he imprisoned her father for trespassing and she trespassed herself while looking for him and ended up taking Maurice’s place. But, then they spend time really getting to know each other and slowly fall in love. Things didn't start out the best between them, but they eventually start to see the inner beauty in each other. And getting to watch their love grow is basically the definition of Disney magic.

#4: Aragorn & Arwen “The Lord of the Rings” franchise (2001-03)

Talk about forbidden love. He's human, she's half-elven, and if they are to be together, she’d have to choose between her immortal Elvish life or the mortal one of man. But when you participate in saving all of Middle-earth together, an unbreakable bond more powerful than the one ring is forged. This is a power couple if we’ve ever seen one. Although there are certainly a lot of challenges facing them, Arwen leaves her life as an elf to be with him. And “The Lord of the Rings” manages to tell this story without reducing her to some silly girl who throws her life away for a boy. She's a confident woman who makes her own life choice.

#3: Roger & Jessica Rabbit “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” (1988)

This is such an odd, yet epic couple. With this movie’s combo of animation and live action, Jessica Rabbit could have been made into a live action human woman, but those...we’ll call them bodacious proportions would be unrealistic to expect from any real life woman. Rather, Jessica is a human woman, yet still in cartoon form, but in a live action world. And Roger is a cartoon rabbit. A little confusing? Yeah, but they make it work. Any couple who can make each other’s eyes bulge out of their heads has gotta be true love. She and Roger are weirdly, the perfect couple, and they also fight villains together.

#2: Donkey & Dragon “Shrek” franchise (2001-)

It may have started out with Donkey flirting just to avoid a horrible fiery death at the hands of a dragon, but then again, none of the couples in this franchise are what you’d call a typical fairy tale romance. Though they meet under intense circumstances, they do fall in love for real, and become a formidable team. After saving Shrek and Fiona from Lord Farquaad in the first movie, there was no stopping them. They even had little mixed donkey/dragon, or dronkey babies, and got one of the best happy endings in the franchise. We’re not even gonna try to get into how that worked. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions. Melman the Giraffe & Gloria the Hippopotamus, “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” (2008) Opposites Attract Elisa Esposito & "The Amphibian Man", “The Shape of Water” (2017) The Beauty & the Sea Creature Thomas Curry & Atlanna, “Aquaman” (2018) A Human & an Amphibious Humanoid from the Underwater Kingdom of Atlantis Hellboy & Liz Sherman, “Hellboy” franchise (2004-) A Match Made in Hell

#1: Lois Lane & Superman [aka Clark Kent] “Superman” franchise (1941-)

They are arguably the most iconic super couple in history. Clark Kent and Lois Lane have been together in several different media over decades. Whether it’s comic books, TV series, or movies, animated, or live action, these two never cease to amaze. In earlier versions, Lois was a bit more the damsel in distress type, always needing Superman to fly to her rescue. But their story continues to evolve with each new incarnation, and in later years they have become equal partners. Though Clark is the one with the super powers, Lois has developed into a strong female character who uses her talents as a reporter to fight evil alongside her Superman.
