From Madonna and Prince to Adele and Drake, numerous artists throughout the years have opted to drop, add to or change their birth name for a stage name with a little more… pizazz. You can now add Halsey to that list. Born Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, it is wholly apparent why the New Jersey native decided to adopt something that was a little…catchier. Halsey is an anagram of her first name and also a nod to a street in Brooklyn that meant a lot to her growing up.

Endometriosis is a condition that affects the uterus. It is characterized by tissue growing in the wrong place, which in turn can cause chronic pain, diarrhea, bloating and fatigue. Halsey was diagnosed with the diseases after years of suffering. Instead of trying to hide this fact, the singer went in the opposite direction; posting a lengthy message on Twitter telling her story and letting people know that if they ever want to talk she is there for them. Her transparency didn’t go unnoticed, as the post received countless likes and retweets. It’s refreshing to see a celeb that isn’t afraid to talk about health problems in such an open forum!

Rarely will an artist’s first release make such an impact. However, Halsey isn’t like other artists. Written about a relationship with someone who just couldn’t be there, emotionally, “Ghost” went on to gain over 45 million views on YouTube. The impact of the success was felt almost immediately, as she was completely unprepared for stardom. In fact, when record labels started to call, Halsey had to ask a friend to pose as her manager. Far from a one hit wonder, Halsey is multitalented – something she made wholly apparent after she decided to direct the music video for her song “Now or Never”.

As has become the norm, many a future star will get their start by posting cover songs to YouTube. The video sharing site is the ideal platform for introducing the world to young, new talent. Halsey was no different. The pop star began posting acoustic covers on the site, and had 16,000 subscribers by age 18. She used this as a way to hone her skills while simultaneously developing a reputation as a competent and unique artist. One of her most well-known videos was a parody of the Taylor Swift song “I Knew You Were Trouble”. Perhaps the two will work together in the future!
