Success is a function of vision, ambition, execution, timing and luck. Success is also relative, do you judge it based on the goals you set or how successful you are relative to others.
But ultimately, while many take stabs at it and I’ve read many takes on it, the one line that stands out is the following:
Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.
Calvin Coolidge, 30th President of the US
The details and manifestations change depending on one’s goals and settings, but persistence is usually the common denominator.
The only thing that separates winners from losers isn’t a desire to win, it’s refusing to lose and doing what it takes to win. Mind you, some don’t cross ethical lines to win… those people are few, but that’s for a separate post.
