Long before Johnny Galecki was starring as a nerdy scientist on TV, he was being bullied by Ryan Phillippe’s Barry in this ‘90s slasher flick. When a group of friends think they’ve killed someone with their car, the timid Max is blamed and pays the ultimate price. After Barry threatens him with a hook, Max later finds himself on the receiving end of a grisly deathblow. Interacting with the so-called cool kids certainly didn’t work out well for Max this time.

“Friday the 13th” (1980)

Just when these two thought they were going to get lucky, their luck ran out. If you have sex in this film genre, your time left breathing is going to quickly run out. Although this has become an overly familiar horror trope, it in no way takes away from the awesomeness of this scene. Two camp counsellors find some alone time to get busy and instead get busy dying when an unknown assailant crashes their good times. The two characters meet their end from a first-person point of view and this is what they get for not doing their jobs.

“The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” (1974)
Despite being made on a shoestring budget by a then-unknown director, there’s a good reason this flick became a horror classic. That reason is because the filmmakers pulled zero punches. When Kirk enters the home of a cannibalistic family, we know that he is likely to regret it, but we couldn’t have envisioned how brutal his death would be. A door slides open and a hammer is swung, causing Kirk’s body to spasm. He is later seen butchered by a chainsaw while Pam watches impaled on a hook – in other words, this scene and movie are not for the faint of heart.

“Child’s Play” (1988)
A child’s toy comes to life and kills?!? Sounds like a pretty stupid concept, but in execution, “Child’s Play” is a pretty damn great film and Chucky is totally frightening. When Andy’s mother needs to leave, she entrusts her son’s safety to her friend Maggie, but we’re sure she never suspected that it was the adult in this situation that would be in danger. Paranoid, Maggie creeps around the apartment looking for an assailant, never suspecting that a Good Guy Doll would be her undoing. Struck in the face with a hammer, she takes several steps backward, probably in shock, crashes through a window and falls to her death, becoming Chucky’s very first victim.

“The Cabin in the Woods” (2012)
“The Cabin in the Woods” has fun with every horror cliché in the book, one of which is that the slutty girl needs to die first. When a group of students travels to a cabin, two of them break off to have sex. However, they have the misfortune of crossing paths with a zombified version of the Buckner family. Ripped away from her boyfriend, who was helpless to come to her aid, Jules is mercilessly decapitated moments after she was given a close-up view of the weapon that does the deed. Ladies, if you’re in a slasher flick: keep your clothes on. The viewers may not like it, but your heartbeat will thank you.

Coming out shortly after “Scream,” “Urban Legend” is largely remembered as a cheap retread of superior self-aware slasher flicks. Although that view is a fair one, it’s also a shame because that downplays the magnificence of this opening sequence that brings an urban legend to life. This scene borrows from the tale of a young woman scared of a man that is following her. Eventually, she finds out that her supposed stalker was actually trying to warn her about the axe-wielding maniac in the back seat of her car. By that point, however, it’s too late.
#4: Phil Stevens
“Scream 2” (1997)
We know, we know, you were expecting to see Casey Becker from the first “Scream” film. What you may have forgotten, though, is Casey’s inability to answer some movie trivia resulted in her boyfriend’s death. The “Scream” sequel begins with a great death too, as a couple goes to the theater to see “Stab,” a film within a film based on the original film. That may be confusing, but it’s clear that curiosity killed this cat, as Phil tries to hear the action in the stall beside him and instead is met with what appears to be a knife in the ear. In the ear!
#3: Wesley Rhoades
“Halloween” (2007)
This may not be the “Halloween” film that you were expecting, but this death definitely earned its place on our list. When the school bully makes the mistake of taking advantage of a young Michael Myers, his retribution comes quick and bloody. Stalked by his one-time victim, who is wearing a creepy clown mask and wielding a stick, Wesley begs for mercy and apologizes. For a mere moment when Michael removes his mask, his suffering seems to be at an end. That is until Michael dons the mask again and ends the bully’s life instead.
#2: Judith Margaret Myers
“Halloween” (1978)
Surprise, the original made the cut too! Really though, how could it not? Accompanied by arguably the best score in slasher history, we get a first person, masked view of a killer stalking his prey. A topless woman quickly comes into view and when she turns around, a butcher’s knife is shown swinging at its target and taking her life. After exiting, he is met by a surprised voice saying his name. The predator is revealed to be a young boy in a clown outfit and the audience’s expectations are utterly blown away. Creepy and shocking, this scene is a masterpiece.

“A Nightmare on Elm Street” (1984)
Freddy may have devolved into a jokester of sorts these days, but we hope you haven’t forgotten how terrifying his first film truly was. A being that will kill you while you sleep, Freddy is intellectually freaky and Tina’s demise is just plain chilling. He chases her down an alleyway where his arms lengthen to ensure no escape, and we then segue way from seeing her dream to see what is actually happening to her. Floating in the air in front of her boyfriend, she is ripped to shreds and flung across the room before she convulses, fruitlessly trying to survive before falling dead on the bed.
