The 10 Best Christmas Themed Video Game Levels
Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we’re counting down our picks for the ten best Christmas-themed levels in video games. There are plentiful cozy and wholesome Christmas, Holiday, and wintery levels that bring oodles of smiles, joy, and warmth to choose from.
A Little Light Snowfall
“Yoshi’s Wooly World” (2015)Hop into World 5, Level 5 for some snow-covered wintery goodness that will surely fuel the Christmas spirit. Yoshi’s Wooly World is already a downright cozy game; one that has been stitched together to provide platforming fun for the whole family. A Little Light Snowfall tosses you into a winter wonderland that will spark your imagination. From the smorgasbord of smiling snowmen to the cottony and pillowy snow piles nestled all around the stage to the woolen gifts and presents strewn about to the soft and cuddly mountain-like winter hats in the background to the utterly charming Christmas-inspired music, A Little Light Snowfall truly has it all for that North Pole experience.
Christmas Spring Valley
“Christmas Nights Into Dreams” (1996)The 1996 Christmas season brought with it a nice little Sega Saturn gift to unwrap in the form of Christmas Nights Into Dreams. This over-the-top and hyper-vibrant themed version of Nights sees Elliot and Claris trying to find the missing star from the central Christmas tree. It’s a simple premise that perfectly sets the stage for this cheery, sugar-infused adventure. Soaring through the wintery night sky hoovering up bells, baubles, stars, and other trinkets as fast as possible while looping to and fro, with the hopes of getting high scores is so much fun. This Christmas-fied version of Spring Valley is a treat to experience bookended by a heartwarming, festive story.
Whoville
“The Grinch” (2000)Like many 3D platformers of its time, the PS1’s Grinch game might be a bit wonky and rough around the edges; however, you simply can’t deny the seasonal charm of exploring Whoville. The Grinch is a classic Christmas time film for the whole family, so being able to play as the titular character who must cause holiday mischief around Whoville makes for a good time. Smashing Christmas presents and snowmen, painting over posters, and avoiding being hit by snowballs are just some of the madcaps you will get up to in this festive town. The central town Christmas tree adorned with cozy lights is a real highlight here in Whoville, especially as the snow gently falls all around. However, the Grinch has work to do, so hop to it already.
The North
“Pumpkin Jack” (2020)For a game that’s all about the autumn/Halloween season, it was quite the pleasant surprise to be greeted by The North: the last main stage of Pumpkin Jack that features a wonderful winter/Christmas ambiance that needs to be experienced during the festive season. The North starts out as just another cold winter level but quickly heads into the pure Christmas direction. Pumpkin Jack happens upon a holiday village that is decorated with lights, presents, candy canes, and more... Sure, the Christmas trees might be sentient, ready to attack Pumpkin Jack, and the snowmen are a bit gnarled; however, there’s still a lot of charm here. Plus the icing on the cake comes when you get to smack and whack a plethora of Christmas gifts back at a Santa cosplayer to stop his nefarious misdeeds.
Frosty Village
“Diddy Kong Racing” (1997)While any of the stages from Snowflake Mountain could be a candidate for this festive list; for our money, Frost Village truly takes the sugar-infused fruit cake here. From the snowy North Pole-inspired landscape to the warm glow of the village houses beneath the full winter moon to the myriad evergreen trees festooned with colorful Christmas lights to the cozy lamp posts that guide your way to the holly jolly music, Frosty Village will surely put you in the Christmas spirit, whether you are racing against your pals or hoovering up some silver coins.
Fortress of Festivity
“Pikmin 3” (2013)Replete with bountiful presents, ornaments, sweets, stockings, and even a lovely Christmas tree, the DLC level, Fortress of Festivity, in Pikmin 3 is an absolute holiday delight. Guiding your Pikmin around the dinner table that is loaded with so many Christmas items makes for a really fun gameplay experience, especially during the holiday season. While your Pikmin carry around fruit and slide down the Christmas tree garland, a big ol’ smile will be plastered to your face. Just beware the devious Bug-Eyed Crawmad atop the ooey, gooey pizza. Don’t worry though, this menace is no match for your festive Pikmin.
Cozy Cabin
“Kirby’s Epic Yarn” (2010)This undeniably adorable stage is sure to warm your heart and soul on those cold winter nights when you are bundling up on the couch, fuzzy blanket tossed over you, and a mug of hot chocolate ready to be sipped and enjoyed. Cozy Cabin’s joyfulness and playfulness is simply unmatched. From the beginning of the stage where you hop down a chimney like Santa Claus, it’s clear that you are in for a cozy good time. This stage really shines in the Christmas season because of its many nods to the holiday including snow-dusted trees, various shiny baubles and trinkets, magical music, warm fireplaces, and perfectly knitted cabins to explore.
Merry Mountain
“Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” (2017)The moment you see the colorful Christmas wreath hanging from the starting gate and the magical Christmas train overflowing with toys and goodies flying above you, it’s clear that you are in for a fantastically festive time. Although Merry Mountain is an extremely short looping track, it’s chock full of holiday goodness galore. As you whiz around the stage you are greeted by larger-than-life presents, happy snowmen, candy cane lamp posts, and an utterly charming Christmas village with oodles upon oodles of lights, garland, and plenty of pizzazz to keep you merry all season long.
Freezeezy Peak
“Banjo-Kazooie” (1998)Easily one of the most recognizable and revered Christmas levels in video games, Freezeezy Peak is a true seasonal gem, especially if you are a fan of 3D platformers. I mean this stage really does have it all to get you into the Christmas spirit, on top of being a stellar level in and of itself. Want to sled down a massive snowman’s red and yellow scarf? Go for it! Want to light up a whimsical Christmas tree and soar through its golden star atop? You can do that! Want to peruse a cozy snowed-in cabin village? Why not! And, if that wasn’t enough, Mumbo can transform you into a Walrus to explore every nook and cranny of this wintery Christmas stage.
Christmas Town
“Kingdom Hearts 2” (2005)The first time Sora, Donald, Goofy, and Jack Skellington pop out of the evergreen tree atop Yuletide Hill to be greeted by the tantalizing views of the North Pole below will make you burst out in Christmas cheer. Part of the Halloween Town section of Kingdom Hearts 2, Christmas Town is the real deal. It’s up to Sora and the team to help Santa Claus (or has Jack calls him–Sandy Claws) save Christmas. The festive lights, trees, and candle glow of Candy Cane Lane combined with the light snowfall and the twilight sky help make Christmas Town such a magical level. Then, getting to work alongside Santa himself to stop both the Heartless and Oogie Boogie from causing too much mayhem is such a joyful treat. Christmas Town will light up your festive season like no other. Now, ‘chip chop chip’…Sandy Claws needs your help to save Christmas!
