Welcome to MojoPlays! Today, we’re looking at 10 games that let you explore romantic relationships. Which NPCs made your heart skip a beat? Let us know in the comments!

“The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” (2011)

Version Of Skyrim

Few RPGs have as many romance options as Skyrim, which offers dozens of male and female NPCs for players to woo, marry, and travel with to their heart’s content. All you need to do is gain the Amulet of Mara, which you can do pretty easily by talking to Maramal the Priest. Once obtained, you just have to do a quest or even just run an errand for the lucky guy or gal you’ve got your eye on, and they’ll be open to the possibility of marriage. The spouses might not have super detailed story arcs of their own, but they will provide you with some gameplay buffs that aren’t to be overlooked.

“Persona 5” (2016)

In typical “Persona” fashion, Joker is given a wide range of confidants to bond with – and you can romance all the female characters you have a link with. Though you might be compelled to play honestly and choose only one girlfriend, you can be a total scumbag and have a dozen at once. But be warned, Joker’s sleazy ways will eventually catch up with him, leading to a hilarious scene where he’s confronted by his many love interests. Still, the confidants are all detailed side-stories in their own right, so you’ll be missing out by ignoring the potential for romance completely – not to mention the gameplay advantages of ranking up the arcanas.

“The Sims” series (2000-)

Romance is an integral part of life simulation games, and it’s been a major factor of “The Sims” ever since the beginning. The various options for love and romance have grown over the years, and in “The Sims 4”, the world is your oyster. As well as having everything from young love to pregnancies and even divorce, “The Sims” has been a landmark franchise for LGBT+ representation and other diverse options. You don’t have to rely on anybody else for good representation here; it’s exactly what you make it. There’s a surprising amount of depth to a franchise where all the characters speak gibberish.

“Divinity: Original Sin II” (2018)

10 Biggest Differences Between Dead Space Original and Remake

This sometimes-overlooked RPG has some of the weirdest and most wonderful romance options of any game, with a wide array of romanceable companions. If you’re a glutton for punishment you might lean towards the Red Prince, a humanoid lizard who wants to make you his slave while pining for his true love – yes, really. For a more reciprocal experience, however, there are plenty of more standard romance options such as Fane; an undead, talking skeleton you might take a while to warm up to, all the way to the elven assassin Sebille, whose silver tongue is sure to melt you. In an industry flooded with boring, predictable romances, “Original Sin II” is a refreshing change of pace.

“The Witcher III: Wild Hunt” (2015)

Geralt may not have a wealth of romance options, but the few he does have are superbly written, deep stories that span all three games. Though Geralt can have the occasional fling that may or may not come back to bite him, he’s generally caught in a love triangle between sorceresses Yennefer of Vengerberg and Triss Merigold. Will you choose the white wolf’s one true love, or will you go for his new flame, the spark kindled when he lost his memory and forgot who Yen was? And there are additional romance options to explore in the two DLCs if you decide you don’t like Yen or Triss. Jeez, a Witcher sure knows how to get around!

“Fire Emblem: Three Houses” (2019)

It wouldn’t be “Fire Emblem” without a whole host of potential partners, and in “Three Houses” you’ve got plenty of both opposite-sex and same-sex pairings to explore. Spend your time building your bonds with the game’s many characters in the first half, and by the second half, you can choose whether to pursue the relationship, potentially even getting married. Romances are a key part of this enormous JRPG, and they’ll provide combat benefits as well once they reach the highest support rank. Ultimately, there’s no reason not to settle down in this game – especially with such phenomenal, potential partners like Edelgard, Bernadetta, Claude, Dorothea, Dimitri and - Holy Sothis there’s so many!

“Mass Effect” series (2007-)

10 Biggest Changes in Mass Effect Legendary Edition

What would humans do if we actually encountered aliens? Well, BioWare has a pretty good idea: we’d romance them, obviously. The first game had limited options, with Kaiden for FemShep, Ashley for male Shepard, and Liara T’Soni for both. But later entries made it possible to romance far more members of the Normandy’s ragtag crew – though, if you really want, you can keep the same partner for all three main games. “Andromeda”, too, though it was a huge flop, still had a wide variety of romance options with plenty of likable characters. Where video game romance is concerned, we have a lot to thank “Mass Effect” for. Especially for such stellar options like Tali and Garrus.

“Cyberpunk 2077” (2020)

10 Things To Know Before Playing Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty

Night City is a dystopia through and through, with megacorporations controlling the populace and running the world into the ground. But that doesn’t mean there’s no time for romance. In fact, plenty of characters in “Cyberpunk” are able to be romanced by V, some specific to a certain gender and some not – in fact, some are only open to you if you choose a specific Lifepath at the beginning. CDPR has even gone a step further than many other games with robust romance systems by adding NSFW cutscenes – though this can be toggled on or off. Ultimately, Night City is obsessed with sex, so it would be strange if there weren’t a ton of options available to players. Now if only Keanu was an option...

“Dragon Age” series (2009-)

“Mass Effect” is all well and good, but an even deeper romance system is present in BioWare’s other flagship IP. While in “Dragon Age II” anybody is able to be romanced by Hawke regardless of gender, the first game had certain companions that could only be romanced by one gender, and the third had romances depending on both gender and race. Cullen, for instance, isn’t interested in the Qunari or Dwarves, but it’s long been known he has a thing for Elves. This more realistic approach to sexuality added a lot of nuance to the romance options in “Inquisition”, and added replayability where you’d have to make a new character to see certain options. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few Honorable Mentions:

“Florence” (2018)

“Stardew Valley” (2016)

It’s astounding that a game made by one guy over many years has so many detailed and fulfilling romance options, but Eric Barone knocked it out of the park with “Stardew Valley.” You make your own character and move to Pelican Town to fix up your family farm. Your time quickly stretches into years, and over those years you can court any of the twelve love interests regardless of gender. By bringing them gifts and interacting regularly, you can develop your relationship and eventually get married. Your chosen spouse then moves in with you and even helps with your chores. “Stardew Valley” has a lot of heart, and that’s never clearer than in the romance options.
