10 Times Doctor Who Infiltrated Video Games
VOICE OVER: Aaron Brown WRITTEN BY: Aaron Brown
Since Doctor Who can travel to any time or location, we're honestly surprised he hasn't appeared in more games. For this list, we'll be looking at Easter Eggs, references, and appeances of The Doctor in video games. Our list includes “Assassin's Creed Origins” (2017), “Wizard101” (2008), “Fallout New Vegas” (2010), “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt” (2015), and more!

Welcome to MojoPlays and things are getting a bit wibbly wobbly timey wimey as we travel through all of time and space to find 10 times Doctor Who infiltrated video games. For this list, we’ll be looking at times where the Doctor appeared in places that can only make you ask “What? What? WHAT?” What was your favorite time the Doctor popped in to check on a video game? Fire up your TARDIS and let us know down in the comments. So without further ado, Allons-y!

Silence in the Wasteland

“Fallout New Vegas” (2010)

As if the irradiated wasteland didn’t have enough problems, in Fallout New Vegas with the “Wild Wasteland” Perk equipped, instead of the normal ghouls and scavengers, the Courier will encounter a much more dangerous threat, the Vashta Nerada. Hiding in the dust particles of shadows, these microscopic piranha of the galaxy can strip any food to bone in mere seconds, but thanks to the neural relays of many suits, death is not the end for the Vashta Nerada’s food supply as the swarm is able to reanimate the suit and continue their buffet using the neural relay to call out in the victim’s voice, “Hey who turned out the lights?”. The Y-17 Trauma Override Harness already is too close for comfort when compared to the remains of the suits in the episode “Silence in the Library” and having them call out from their skeletal remains is a nightmare too close to reality.

Reprobed TARDIS

“Destroy All Humans! 2 Reprobed” (2022)

No matter the time period or era, the Doctor is no stranger to protecting the Earth from invading alien forces and given the level of destruction Crypto leaves in his wake, it would definitely be difficult for the Doctor to ignore. However, even as many citizens in the streets of London cry out for the Doctor and his TARDIS as Crypto rains down all manner of alien terror, there seems to be an even more important threat calling the Doctor away. In the fourth mission of the game, if Crypto explores to the western most side of the map, hidden in a cave is the TARDIS patiently waiting for the Doctor to return. Assuming Crypto has previous knowledge of the Doctor and his protection of Earth, it really has to burn his phasers that the Doctor doesn’t view him as enough of a threat to intervene.

Doctor’s Creed

“Assassin’s Creed Origins” (2017)

The Doctor is no stranger to ancient Egypt, having visited the age of the Pharaohs innumerable times in the tv series, however the Doctor’s visit to the realm of the Assassins seems to have caused something to seriously malfunction in the TARDIS. Off the coast of Letopolis, Bayak will discover the TARDIS completely turned to stone and partially buried in the murky depths. That doesn’t seem to be the only issue the Doctor is experiencing though as sticking out from underneath the TARDIS is a pair of legs presumably from an unfortunate companion or passerby taking a dip in the channel. We can only hope the Doctor is nearby furiously working to correct whatever timey wimey shenanigans have befallen the TARDIS.

Unusual Call Box

“Fallout” (1997)

Given just how far beyond repair the wastelands of the Fallout universe have become, it seems only natural for the Doctor to check in on the remaining residents now and then, which has to be an alarming sight for any wastelander who happens across a bright blue Police Box in the middle of the irradiated wastes. While exploring the California landscape, the Vault Dweller will find the Doctor seemingly monitoring the remainder of humanity and by investigating the TARDIS won’t offer much more information for the confused wastelander besides it’s a call box from the 1960s. Approaching the TARDIS will send the Doctor fleeing the scene, leaving only a poor confused Vault Dweller with a story no one will ever believe.

Don’t Blink

“The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt” (2015)

“Don’t even blink. Blink and you’re dead. They are fast, faster than you could believe. Don’t turn your back, don’t look away, and don’t blink!” Geralt has faced all manner of horrific creatures with all sorts of mystical powers but we don’t think even his Witcher training and enhancements could save him from the Weeping Angels. Only moving when their potential target turns away or even blinks, the Weeping Angels are the most merciful hunters in the universe, sending their victims back in time and living off their remaining life energy as their prey lives out the remainder of their lives in the past. While investigating a church near Velen, Geralt will encounter a group of statues that shift positions and move closer every time he turns his back before disappearing entirely. Interesting indeed, Geralt.

Taz TARDIS

“Taz: Wanted” (2002)

The TARDIS has been through its fair share of disasters during its travels but we don’t think anything could really prepare it for the actual tornado that follows Taz wherever he goes, so it’s very surprising to see the Doctor’s beloved TARDIS acting as Taz’s taxi service between levels of Taz: Wanted. Apparently, the first Doctor has a soft spot for the Tasmanian Devil and his plight as he searches for his missing wife. Fans can catch a quick glimpse inside as the doors open to let the cyclone loose and will clearly see the classic white interior and circular panels decorating the walls. However, no matter how much the Doctor wants to help Taz, we don’t think all of time and space can contain the devil’s notoriously short temper.

Tavid Dennant

“Everquest” (1999)

The Doctor is no stranger to attempting to blend into his new surroundings on every new adventure, but it’s in his appearance in Everquest that his camouflage seems to be not of his own design. In the Seeds of Destruction expansion, the NPC of Flavin Deepockets is replaced with Tavid Dennant -the Doctor was never one for subtlety- and will not only ask the player if they’ve seen his precious scarf but will also reference a particular pocket watch that he can’t remember obtaining but is very special to him. This is similar to when the Doctor attempted to hide from the Family of Blood by camouflaging himself as a human, although who is after him in the world of Norrath and is dangerous enough to send the Doctor into hiding is a terrifying question all on its own.

Professor

“Wizard101” (2008)

The Doctor is a firm believer that knowledge is the key to everything and with his centuries exploring all of time and space, it’s not unlike him to stop off and attempt to impart some of that wisdom to future generations. During his visit to worlds of Lemuria and the Spiral, apparently the Chameleon Circuit has been fixed and has also allowed the Doctor to blend in with the locales just as his TARDIS is meant to do. Sending students on numerous quests to maintain the timeline of the world, players will eventually even get to explore the Professor’s B.O.X. and anyone familiar with the layout of the NuWho era will instantly recognize the redecorated interior. The Professor is clearly impressed with the students of Wizard101’s ingenuity as once his many quests are over, he tells them he may need to call on them again soon.

Doctor Pokemon

“Pokemon Platinum” (2009)

One of the core principles of the Timelord society is that they are not to interfere in the natural order of the things they witness. The Doctor remains a non-believer in this policy and his love for humanity often causes him to not only be at odds with various Earthbound invading forces but the Timelords as well. In Pokemon Platinum, the Doctor seemingly is there investigating Team Galactic and assists the player as they try to stop the evildoers from ripping open time and space itself. Using the name, the Looker, his physique and style resemble the tenth Doctor a little too closely for it to be a coincidence and the threat that Team Galactic poses to the very fabric of time and space is something he would be all too keen to stop. We just wonder what starter Pokemon he chose to begin his adventure.

Doctor of Dimensions

“Lego Dimensions” (2015)

Throughout this list we’ve seen numerous cameos made by the Doctor, but what about an adventure where you can team up with the Timelord himself? Within the wide multiverse of Lego Dimensions, Batman, Wyldstyle, and Gandalf will encounter the twelfth interaction of the Doctor and join forces with the wandering traveler as they take on Daleks, Lego Cybermen, and even Weeping Angels. Not only can the Twelfth Doctor regenerate into any previous incarnations, but players can even explore the TARDIS itself and build their own version of K-9. The Doctor’s track record when it comes to leading their own adventures in video games might be spotty at best but when paired with the right companions, the Doctor’s best adventures don’t necessarily need to be their own.
