Not every crossover event can be the most ambitious in history. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today, we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 WTF Video Game Crossovers.
For this list, we’re putting a spotlight on the most bizarre crossovers to grace our consoles. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself asking “WTF?” throughout the video.
Danica Patrick + Sonic
“Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed” (2012)
No matter how many times they try, mixing Sonic and his colorful friends with humans has always looked a little awkward. “Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing Transformed” was graced with the presence of NASCAR driver Danica Patrick. Her car even came with a name - the “Danicar”. This probably happened as a part of a promotional deal, as Patrick drove a custom-painted car to promote the game during the Texas Motor Speedway in November 2012. Hey, if we had to paint our cars to be in a game, we’d probably do it too.
Mario, Luigi & Peach + The NBA
“NBA Street V3” (2005)
Yes, that’s right: Nintendo licensed not one, not two, but THREE characters in a game made by EA Sports! If you were the lucky owner of the GameCube version, you could play as Mario, Luigi, and Peach in a game of hoops. On top of the stiff and uncanny animations, seeing our Mushroom Kingdom trio play basketball alongside real NBA players feels...off, especially when they’re doing crossovers against some of the league’s best.
TMNT + Raving Rabbids
“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash-Up!” (2009)
These guys are all over the place these days. The Wii version Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash-Up included three different Rabbids as unlockable characters. We’ll admit it’s hilarious to see someone like Raphael get his butt whooped by a Rabbid, but did we really need three of them? Eh, at least one of them was dressed up like Sam Fisher.
“Alex Kidd” + “Shinobi”
“Alex Kidd in Shinobi World” (1990)
The “Alex Kidd” games are fun, entry-level platformers that are just a joy to play thanks to their simple gameplay and charming visuals. In direct contrast to that, we have Sega’s other platforming series, “Shinobi”, which is known for being one of the most difficult platformers ever made. So, what prompted Sega to blend the two to create “Alex Kidd in Shinobi World”? Maybe it was to help introduce kids to a harder game? The result is a character roaming through a world in which he clearly does not belong.
Arena of Valor + DC Comics Characters
“Arena of Valor” (2017)
“Arena of Valor” - a mobile MOBA game boasting a colorful cast of warriors, assassins, gods, fairies, and DC Comics superheroes. Wait...what was that last one? Yes, you heard right. You can play as some of your favorite DC heroes (and the Joker) among a bunch of fantasy characters. While we wouldn’t mind playing as Supes, Batman, or Wonder Woman, they just seem incredibly out of place next to everyone else, as most of the game’s cast is based on various folklore. Well, more power to the devs, we suppose.
Mario + Final Fantasy
“Mario Hoops 3-on-3” (2006)
This time around, Mario is playing in his own court, and if seeing the Mushroom Kingdom playing basketball wasn’t weird enough for you, maybe these unlockable characters will. “Mario Hoops 3-on-3” features a Moogle, a Cactuar, the Ninja, the White Mage, and the Black Mage as playable characters. This crossover of “Final Fantasy” and “Mario” isn’t what makes this odd. It’s the fact that they’re all playing basketball together! They’re not adventuring, beating up bad guys… they’re just playing a game of hoops!
Street Fighter VS Power Rangers
“Power Rangers: Legacy Wars” (2017)
The “Power Rangers have had so many crossovers that we managed to make a Top 10 list out of them all! Of the many video game crossovers possible, we weren’t expecting the Power Rangers to go toe to toe with the likes of the “Street Fighter” cast. As of May 2018, you can play as Ryu, Chun-Li, Cammy, Guile, M. Bison, and Akuma. Two months later, they added in… Ryu Ranger? Pretty weird stuff.
Thanos + “Fortnite”
“Fortnite: Battle Royale” (2017)
Celebrating the release of “Avengers: Infinity War”, Marvel and Epic Games teamed up to bring an exclusive mode to “Fortnite”. In the Limited Time “Infinity Gauntlet” mode, players could fight over control of the Infinity Gauntlet, granting its wielder the ability to transform into Thanos. What does Thanos have to do with the world of Fortnite? Don’t think about it!
“Monster Hunter” + “Metal Gear Solid”
“Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker” (2010) & “Monster Hunter Portable 3rd” (2010)
Snake has met some pretty interesting characters in his life. Does anyone else remember Pipo Snake? Yet, “Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker” raised a few eyebrows with its Hunting Missions, where Snake can become a Monster Hunter as part of a promotional campaign. Wasn’t exactly what we were expecting, but...cool. In return, “Monster Hunter Portable 3rd” included outfits based on Big Boss, the Boss, and Solid Snake. These two franchises couldn’t be more different, which makes it all the more interesting.

The Rabbids return in a crossover that initially confused some and angered others. Despite the backlash before its official reveal, “Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle” would become a critical and commercial hit. That doesn’t make the game any less strange. You got Rabbid versions of Mario and the gang, toilet-shaped structures decorating the Mushroom Kingdom, and Mario was wielding a gun...er, hand cannon-thingy... Also, is it worth mentioning Grant Kirkhope of “Banjo-Kazooie” fame composed the music? Nintendo practically let Ubisoft design their own Mario game, and it has become one of the best games on the Switch!
