Picking-up immediately following the events of Modern Warfare 2, the Russian Federation has begun intensifying their invasion of the United States of America.
They have also begun invading Europe, England, France and Germany, spurring you to fight for the fate of the free world.
A direct sequel, this entry features the return of Task Force 141, who are on the run after killing rogue U.S Army Lieutenant Gerald Shepherd at the conclusion of the previous game. These characters include Captain John “Soap” MacTavish, former SAS Captain John Price, and their Russian informant Nikolai.
You will also a number of other characters, such as Delta Force operatives, a Sergeant in London’s Special Air Service, and a Russian Federal Security agent. And of course, ultranationalist Vladimir Makarov returns as the story’s primary villain.
Made up of fifteen missions, this game lets the payers do some globe hopping and role switching. As such, players will take on a large variety of tasks. These include destroying a Russian radar jamming installation placed at the top of the New York Stock Exchange, defending the Russian president and his daughter, and taking control of a US tank gunner traveling through Hamburg.
While the game’s campaign remains a single player affair, Modern Warfare 3 features an all-new Survival Mode. Here, two players can take on countless waves of enemies. Unlike the Zombie mode from previous Call of Duty installments, enemies do not spawn from fixed locations. Instead, they emerge from tactical positions based on your location.
Survival Mode is available on all multiplayer maps. Moreover, players earn cash from their kills, which are used to purchase new weapons, upgrades and ammo.
In addition, players can once again take the fast-paced Special Ops modes. These consist of segments from the singleplayer campaign, as well as all new run and gun levels and on rails segments.
Continuing in the tradition of the series, the thrilling narrative has players work towards objectives. These are shown on the heads up display, which marks the direction and distance of objectives. These consist of arriving at checkpoints, clearing enemies from locations, defending objects or people and planting explosives on targets. Nothing new here, this is the tried and true formula that’s always worked.
With sixteen new multiplayer maps, this game adds several new modes to choose from. These include Kill Confirmed and Team Defender. The first of which pits two teams in a deathmatch setting, the twist being that points don’t accumulate in this mode unless enemy dog tags are recovered.
Team Defender on the other hand, offers a spin on Capture the Flag by having gamers protect a flag carrier for as long as possible, without there being a specific flag destination or droppoff. In terms of weapons, as with previous installments, using a weapon allows you to unlock upgrades and attachments for that weapon. Adding to this, in Modern Warfare 3 players will also gain proficiency with the guns they use most frequently, granting them upgrades like faster reloads or less recoil.
For Modern Warfare 3, the Killstreaks System has been completely overhauled. In its place, its focus has been placed on three Strike Packages. These choices include Support, Assault and Specialist. Each not only caters to different battlefield roles, but the levels gamer expertise. Support is designed for casual players, Assault for middle-ground players, while Specialist has been designed the hardcore.
These operate through Point Streaks. No longer exclusively fueled by kills, you are now rewarded for capturing control points and supporting your team. These points are then used to purchase in-battle bonuses, which are based on your role. These range from ballistic vests to airstrikes, new weapons, remote-controlled helicopters, UAVs and attack drones.
Interestingly, each mode rewards players differently. For example, this means that while the casual Support mode is slower to give players a Points Streak, the points don’t disappear upon death.
Developed by Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games, Modern Warfare 3 is available for all major platforms, and has been specifically designed to appeal to both the casual and hardcore gamer.
