7 Things You Should Know About Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing

Taking a page out of Nintendo’s playbook, Sega is heading to the track with its own franchise-based racer. Welcome to Watchmojo.com and today we’ll be taking a look at the 7 things you should know about Sonic & Sega All-Star Racing.
Number 1: The Characters
As a racing game that brings together many of Sega’s iconic and wacky characters, players can expect frantic and wildly amusing face-offs to the finish line. And as you can imagine, any sense of a coherent plot has been thrown out of the window in exchange for a massive amount of variety and mayhem.
As such, gamers can play many of the popular characters from the Sonic series including Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and their enemy Dr. Eggman (formerly known as Dr. Robotnik). In addition characters from many of Sega’s other popular franchises, such as Super Monkey Ball, Samba De Amigo, Billy Hatcher, Shemue, Crazy taxi and Virtua Fighter. In total gamers can pick and choose from 20 different characters.
Number 2: The Vehicles
Gamers will happy to hear that Sega will not be limiting you to go-carts. In fact you will be have the option of 4 different categories that will provide you with a varied and extreme arcade experience. These include standard vehicles, motorbikes, off-road vehicles, and hovercrafts. Your choices will depend on the type of terrain and obstacles you may encounter. For example, standard vehicles and motorbikes operate better on hard surfaces, while off-road vehicles can handle sand, mud and snow. And hovercrafts may appeal to you for their ability to comfortably glide over any surface, however they are unable to perform drifts and cannot accelerate very well.
Number 3: The Tracks
Nostalgic Sega lovers will definitely enjoy the game’s iconic race settings. These include several Sonic themed racetracks, like Casino Park, as well as locations from the other franchises, such as the haunted mansion from House of The Dead or the castle from Billy Hatcher. In total, 24 challenging tracks will be un-lockable.
Number 4: Weapons and All-Star Moves
While racing, players will be able to collect and use various weapons from the Sega universe. These include rocket launching boxing gloves from Super Monkey Ball and the Sonic bubble shield. In addition to the games standard weapons, each character will have his own specific All-Star Move that allows him to quickly maneuver through the pack. These include Ryo’s ability to summon his signature forklift and AiAi’s (*pronounced Eye-Eye’s) unstoppable Monkey Ball.
Number 5: Sega Miles
By winning races and completing challenges, players will earn Sega Miles that can be used at the in-game shop to purchase un-lockables, such as additional tracks, characters, soundtracks and even art.
Number 6: Mission Mode and Multiplayer
Players will be able to take-on various challenges in the game’s Mission Mode. These include navigating cones, hitting drifting points and making it through a course without crashing. Completing these challenges will earn you in-game bonuses.
The game will also allow for 1-4 player local split-screen support, and online matches for up to 8-players. Plus, the game offers the added treat of online voice chat.
Number 7: Multiplatform Extras and Future Additions
Sonic and Sega All-Stars will be available for all three current generation consoles, as well as for the PC and the Nintendo DS. As a bonus, the Wii and Xbox 360 versions will each feature the exclusive use of Nintendo’s Miis and Microsoft’s Avatars, while the Xbox version will feature an added special cameo by Banjo from the Banjo Kazooie series.
Some fans may be disappointed by the absence of many other vintage characters from Sega’s massive game library, however Sega has hinted that they are saving these for the game’s sequel.
