Grab your magical rods, call your cute companions and activate your transformation sequences. Welcome to Watchmojo’s Anime Duel series, where we pit out some of the strongest characters in anime history and weigh out their odds in battle.
For today’s fight, we’re looking at two iconic magical girls; The Pretty Guardian in a Sailor Suit, Sailor Moon, and the time traveling avenger, Homura Akemi. Both are stars of two of the most genre defining Magical Girl shows of all time and are beloved by many. But we’re not here to judge them based on status. We’re taking a look at who would win in a fight if these two went head to head. You know the rules: five rounds, winner takes all, let’s get magical.
You’re always gonna have to keep smart in the eternal fight against evil. Buuut, the leader of the sailor scouts, Serena Tsukino, doesn’t seem to fit this bill. She’s constantly flunking exams, complaining about studying, and generally making stupid decisions. Indeed, she’d rather dream about boys or play video games rather than further her education. Though, she does manage to apply what she does know, aaand sometimes performs miracle strategies against her foes. But lets be honest, you’re more likely to see her cry…a lot.
We have to say, Homura has the advantage here of because of her continuous two week time loop. She was already intelligent, if a little shy, before her time traveling journey began and now, Homura is constantly applying each time line’s knowledge to her next cycle – acing tests and anticipating her enemies’ movements. She’s also got a good head for Witch hunting and wisdom far beyond anyone else her age.
So, while Serena manages to scrape by with her less-than-average smarts, it just wouldn’t hold up in a battle with the quiet and composed magical girl. This round goes to Akemi Homura.
Sailor Moon: 0 / Homura: 1
Both Sailor Moon and Homura belong to great teams of fellow magical maidens. Homura has the pleasure of fighting alongside not only her best friend, Madoka Kaname, but also scythe wielding Kyoko, sword slashing Sayaka and gun totting Mami. Each has their own special gifts and talents. However there isn’t a lot of unity to their bunch. This goes double for Homura, who is more often working as an antagonist against the girls, granted she has her reasons. Though things do turn around a little in the third movie, Rebellion, Homura would, for the most part, rather go into battle alone.
Sailor Moon is the exact opposite. She depends a great deal on her friends, her fellow Sailor Senshi, and never hesitates to turn to them for help. As the guardians of the solar system, each of the other nine Senshi are gifted with special elemental and spiritual powers, like fire for Mars, thunder and lightning for Jupiter, or water for mercury. Alone they are capable, but together they can be a true force to be reckoned with. There’s a lot more in the teamwork department compared to Homura’s allies, never mind the fact that the Scouts outnumber them by quite a few, 10 to 5 to be more precise. Point goes to Sailor Moon.
Sailor Moon: 1 / Homura: 1
Being able to adapt quickly is a strong requirement for any kind of battle. Homura is consistently resetting the clock on her time journey, which allows her to almost accurately predict events. Homura could also plot sneak attacks well in advance because of this. However, there’s little guarantee that events will play out the same as before. If another wrinkle hits her from out of nowhere, Homura might not be prepared to deal with it adequately. She may be sharp with analysis and weapons but she relies on hoping events will play out her desires to create a fully effective strategy – and she’s also prone to making some questionable impulsive decisions.
While Sailor Moon does have to work a little bit harder to defeat her enemies, there is rarely a challenge she won’t back down from. And there’s the matter of her possessing the Legendary Silver Crystal, which can help Sailor Moon blow away any obstacle in her path. There’s little that needs to be improvised when you have a powerful weapon like that. Early in the series, Serena is given a plethora of magical items to aid her in combat – and often uses them without any practice whatsoever. This quickness to adapt would certainly help her survive in battle.
Even if Homura was able to get the upper hand, there’s not a time gone by that Sailor Moon hasn’t found a way to wriggle out a win with what she’s given. Better luck next round, Homura.
Sailor Moon: 2 / Homura: 1
It’s always good to have a resume of wins and losses to measure your Magical Girl career. And Sailor Moon’s is pretty darn good – She’s tackled some of the most dangerous intergalactic beings the universe can throw at planet Earth. From evil Empresses to a pair of crafty, energy stealing siblings, hell, even her own allies challenged her before they teamed up. if it’s crossed her path, Sailor Moon has likely come out on top. Though only in action for a short period of time, Sailor Moon has got a lot of experience under her belt, victories and defeats.
However, since Homura has been able to relive the same time period over and over again, she has accumulated far more experience than anyone person should have at her age. She understands the nature of Witches, knows how to take them down and even how to immobilize her fellow Magical Girls if need be. There’s no way a girl in Homura’s position wouldn’t become an expert in the field of magical combat. She’s definitely not slouching when the clock rests, she’s always moving forward - non-stop. So much experience for someone so young, we have no choice but to give this point to Homura.
Sailor Moon: 2 / Homura: 2
We’re all tied up heading into the final round of this epic showdown. So how about a look at the arsenal of our two Q-T competitors. In addition to being able to manipulate time, Homura also has a special shield that’s for more than just blocking attacks. It’s also the ultimate locker room, capable of holding hundreds of lovely trinkets. Homura’s weapon of choice is guns - lots of them. Pistols, rocket launchers, shotguns, this little girl is always ready for war.
Sailor Moon might not have that much in terms of hardware. However, her powers and the items she uses in battle are some of the strongest in existence. We’ve already covered the Legendary Silver Crystal. But there’s also the Holy Grail, which powers her up to Super Sailor Moon status. That, in addition to her Moon Rod and Tiara which can be used as a projectile, means that Sailor Moon can use her Crystal energy in a number of ways that almost guarantees sure victory. She can also unleash powerful attacks like the moon healing escalation!
No hail of bullets can compete with such immense power. It’s a close decision but victory goes to the Moon Princess for this category.
Sailor Moon: 3 / Homura: 2
And there you have is, Sailor Moon takes home the victory. Sure Homura might have time travel and a bevy of guns on her side, but that doesn’t count against Sailor Moon’s strong heart, teamwork and a surplus of enemy annihilating abilities. In the name of the moon, our winner is the most iconic magical girl of all.
