10 Best Crossover Video Game DLCs

Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we’re looking at the best video game DLC that featured another franchise or IP. We won’t be looking at crossover events, like those found in “Fortnite.”

The Assassin’s Festival

“Final Fantasy XV” (2015)

While this DLC was sadly only available for a limited time, those who played it know how surprisingly good it was. It saw the main characters heading to a special festival themed around Ubisoft’s “Assassin’s Creed.” There were several mini-games and plenty of cosmetics to earn, which was all in good fun. But, a bit more impressively, there was also a unique story that saw Noctis learn how to behave like an assassin, including running across rooftops and slipping into crowds unnoticed. This could’ve easily been something lighter and generic, but bringing “Assassin’s Creed” gameplay elements into a “Final Fantasy” setting was not only an interesting fit, but a loving celebration.

New Sets of Wheels

“Rocket League” (2015)

Although some of it would later get discontinued, “Rocket League” still received a slew of great crossover DLC. As you might expect from a game centered around rocket-powered cars, the majority of DLC was of iconic vehicles from across a variety of properties. These ranged from more than one type of Batmobile to the DeLorean from “Back to the Future,” from the Ecto-1 from “Ghostbusters” to the Sweet Tooth ice cream truck from “Twisted Metal.” Naturally, none of them had much of an impact on gameplay, but that wasn’t what mattered. With so many famous vehicles in pop culture, the joy came from picking your favorite, or favorites.

Midgar Special

“PowerWash Simulator” (2022)

Surprisingly, “PowerWash Simulator” has one of the more satisfying gameplay hooks of the past few years. A lot of people apparently agree, which has led to several crossover DLC packs, such as one where you get to clean Lara Croft’s mansion. As much fun as that one was, it’s the crossover with “Final Fantasy” we like the most. It takes you through a handful of levels inspired by the famous city, including one where you wash the iconic Scorpion Sentinel. The same calming gameplay found in the base game is elevated here, especially for fans of “Final Fantasy.” It’s hard not to feel completely at ease or smile widely as you move between each challenge.

The Killers

“Dead by Daylight” (2016)

The asymmetric multiplayer juggernaut, “Dead by Daylight,” was almost built with crossovers in mind. It’s a fun-enough hook, tasking a group with surviving and escaping from one lone player in control of a masked killer. But without the frequent DLC crossover characters, we doubt it would still be as popular. If you can think of a Horror franchise, it has likely been included. Ghostface from “Scream,” Pyramid Head from “Silent Hill,” the Demogorgon from “Stranger Things,” and Wesker from “Resident Evil” are just a few villains you can take control of. There have also been some solid new Survivors over the years, but the Killers are where the fun’s at.

Operation Guns

“Vampire Survivors” (2022)

“Vampire Survivors” is an awesome bullet hell roguelike that has you balancing weapons and abilities to stay alive as long as possible. With that kind of description, its crossover DLC with “Contra” is naturally a perfect fit. This could’ve easily been something simple, but the developers went above and beyond. ‘Operation Guns’ brought eight new characters, including poster boys Bill and Lance, more than twenty new automatic weapons, maps and enemies inspired by the series, as well as classic and remixed music. All that greatness on top of the addictive, satisfying gameplay hook that made “Vampire Survivors” a hit in the first place. What more could you want?

Icons

“Mortal Kombat 11” (2019)

Ever since Freddy Krueger appeared as DLC in “Mortal Kombat 9,” NeatherRealm has included more and more iconic characters from other properties that players could purchase. We believe this peaked with “MK 11” due to the variety of crossovers present. We got ultra-violent comic characters, Spawn and Joker. We also got RoboCop, Rambo, and the Terminator to the delight of violent 80s action film fans everywhere. Although not a crossover in the strict sense, it was also great seeing Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa reprise his role as Shang Tsung from the 1995 live-action movie. And wouldn’t you know it? Playing with each of these characters was a bloody good time.

AWE

“Control” (2019)

Yes, it’s a crossover between two franchises owned by the same company. But since none of us were expecting “Alan Wake” to come back, we’re still going to include it. While there were some links in the base game, ‘AWE’ saw them cross over in a much more definitive way. It followed “Control” protagonist, Jesse Faden, as she explored the twisted Oldest House, with Alan himself narrating alongside you as if it were one of his novels. Enemy design was at its peak, making the setting supremely unnerving. The story was also very strong, tying up some loose threads from the 2010 game while setting up some interesting plot points for 2023’s “Alan Wake 2.”

The Legend of Monkey Island

“Sea of Thieves” (2018)

Over the course of multiple expansions, “Sea of Thieves” became one of the best pirate games out there. So, seeing it cross over with the “Monkey Island” series was a genuine delight. Consisting of three Tall Tales, ‘The Legend of Monkey Island’ brought an original plotline with some famous characters and locations from the classic LucasArts adventure franchise. The quest to rescue Guybrush Threepwood, once again voiced wonderfully by Dominic Armato, brought spot-on writing and humor. And, for the most part, Rare did a great job adapting gameplay elements to fit the “Sea of Thieves” style. That’s not to mention the cool unlockable cosmetics that added a bit of fun to theming your ship and pirate.

Fighter Passes

“Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” (2018)

The base roster of “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” featured some great crossover fighters. But with nearly every DLC character, the team managed to continuously build hype. Beginning with the reveal of “Persona 5’s” Joker at the 2018 Game Awards, each one became an event for fans to speculate on. The majority of them weren’t owned by Nintendo either. Banjo and Kazooie, Steve from “Minecraft,” Kazuya from “Tekken, and Sora from “Kingdom Hearts” each took over the internet when they were revealed. Of course, as with any character in “Smash,” they were all viable combatants if you knew how to use them. And honestly? We kind of miss looking forward to them.

Return to Castlevania

“Dead Cells” (2018)

Motion Twin’s “Dead Cells” crossing over with one of its inspirations is an obvious pairing, but it’s still an incredible one. The last expansion the game received is perhaps its strongest, adding several new biomes based on Dracula’s Castle. They were immaculately recreated and came with iconic enemies from across the franchise, naturally concluding with an awesome fight against the big bad Drac. All of the weapons and outfits were a joy to track down and use, too. Anyone who’s played “Dead Cells” knows how phenomenally it controls. And since we haven't gotten an actual “Castlevania” game in years, it’s an incredible tribute that fans should not miss.
