10 Best Items & Abilities Unlocked After Beating the Game

Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we’re looking at the best items, weapons, and abilities you can only get after beating a game at least once. We won’t be including any modes, features, or characters.

The Armor of Zeus

“God of War” (2018)

There are a lot of armor sets to track down in Kratos’ Norse adventures, some of which are naturally harder to get than others. The Armor of Zeus can only be obtained on a New Game Plus playthrough, and each piece takes defeating three of the toughest Valkyries in the game. The belt is earned from Hildr, the gauntlets come from Gondul, and the helmet is earned from their Queen, Sigrun. That’s a whooooole lot of fighting for this reward, but it’s definitely a tantalizing prospect. Each piece gives Kratos a major damage boost, but also increases the damage he takes for a greater challenge. The armor also comes at Level 8, and each piece can hold three enchantments.

Morpho Knight Sword

“Kirby and the Forgotten Land” (2022)

If you want this post-game ability, better be prepared to fight for it. After completing the main story of “Kirby and the Forgotten Land,” you unlock the Isolated Isles. Consisting of remixed sections of previous levels, you have to collect 250 of the 300 pieces of the soul belonging to Leon, leader of the Beast Pack from the base game. This unlocks a fight against the secret final boss, Morpho Knight, which is naturally a pretty big challenge depending on the power up you use. But for all this work, Kirby gains an upgrade to his Sword ability that pretty much annihilates anything in his path. There won’t be much new left to do in the game, but it’s awesome nonetheless.

Mr. Toots

“Red Faction: Armageddon” (2011)

A weapon so dumb and ridiculous, we can’t help but love it. “Red Faction: Armageddon” is a fairly serious game, set on a deadly, futuristic Mars and pitting players against a dangerous group of cultists. Now one of its most memorable weapons, Mr. Toots is an actual unicorn, who emits a stream of harmful rainbow-colored gas blasts every time you fire him. Everything from his ammunition to the awkward, pained face he makes upon using him is absurd. But we can’t deny how hilarious it is to use this magical creature against others. He doesn’t haven’t any extra steps to unlock either; just beat the game once, and the glory of Mr. Toots is yours.

The Mirror Shield

“The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap” (2005)

The Mirror Shield is a pretty handy item in most “Zelda” games. Usually earned in a dungeon, it can reflect light to solve puzzles or certain enemy projectiles depending on the game. However, in “The Minish Cap,” Link can’t earn it until after he’s already beaten Vaati, the final boss. That’s not the only thing, though. Players unlock it at the end of a pretty lengthy side quest that involves fusing Kinstones at several hidden spots in Hyrule, which eventually results in Biggoron appearing in Veil Falls. He turns Link’s regular shield into the Mirror one, which reflects any projectile back as a beam. So it’s pretty neat, even if you won’t have much use for it.

Climax Brace

“Bayonetta” (2009)

Being a fashion-forward type of witch, there are a lot of accessories to gain in “Bayonetta.” The Climax Brace is certainly the most broken in terms of power; it passively puts Bayonetta in Serious Mode, a state that produces her most powerful attacks that is usually only kept for key moments in the story. Which means, every combat encounter wearing the Climax Brace is a total breeze. Naturally, something this powerful takes a lot of effort to unlock. In order to get it, you must find all Umbran Tears of Blood, 101 collectibles hidden across the game. Actually only 50 of them are hidden in the game, while the rest are tied to trophies and achievements, meaning you basically have to beat everything, not just the base game.

Concrete Power

“Infamous Second Son” (2014)

You get some pretty cool abilities in “Infamous Second Son.” But perhaps the strongest one, and one that’s actually used by enemies against you throughout the game, is the Concrete Power. It’s basically what it sounds like; the ability to manipulate concrete for a variety of detrimental attacks. And since you’re literally surrounded by concrete the whole game, it can be a ton of fun to use and you’ll likely never run out of materials. It has fewer moves and upgrades than the other powers, but its strength more than makes up for it. You get it by defeating the final boss and absorbing it from her, which lets you start your post-game adventures with a hefty wallop.

Mjolnir

“Assassin’s Creed Valhalla” (2020)

If a game lets you wield the hammer of the Mighty Thor, you can bet that it will A) likely be the most powerful weapon in the game, and B) require a laundry list of prerequisites in order to unlock. In “Assassin’s Creed Valhalla,” Eivor must first collect all pieces of Thor’s armor set. Three pieces are earned by beating each of the Daughters of Lerion. They each also have a special dagger, which act as keys to get the fourth piece. Finally, the fifth piece is earned by taking out all 45 members of the Order of the Ancients. Only with the full armor are players worthy enough for Mjolnir. But because of where it’s found, you still have to have beaten the main story before you can pick it up.

Hand Cannon

“Dead Space 2” (2011)

The Hand Cannon of “Dead Space 2” is such a good weapon, it actually takes beating the game twice before you can claim it. After you complete the story on any difficulty, you’ll unlock Hard Core Mode. If it wasn’t obvious, that’s the hardest difficulty the game offers. But by beating the game once again on this unlocked difficulty, you’ll earn the Hand Cannon. As a giant foam finger, it’s certainly a silly looking weapon, complete with Isaac’s yells of ‘Bang Bang’ or ‘pew pew’ whenever it’s fired. However, it’s also supremely powerful, able to knock a necromorph back and destroy their limbs in the process.

Sacred Relic Sword

“Elden Ring” (2022)

Players might have a tough time deciding on the best weapon to use for their build in “Elden Ring.” But it’s honestly hard for most of them to measure up to the Sacred Relic Sword. This impressive greatsword has some high stats as well as the ability to produce a wave of holy fire that moves forward, dealing high damage to whatever lay in its path. You can get this weapon by giving Elden Remembrance, a consumable, to Enia, a special merchant at the Roundtable Hold. Unfortunately, there’s only one place you can find Elden Remembrance, and that is after defeating the Elden Beast, the final boss in the game.

P.R.L. 412

“Resident Evil 4” (2005)

“Resident Evil” is a great series for post-game unlocks of powerful weapons. The fourth game alone gives you access to a Tommy Gun and a Rocket Launcher with infinite ammo (Xref). However, our favorite post-game unlock from “RE 4” has to be the P.R.L. 412. Standing for ‘Plaga Removal Laser,’ it can take out nearly any enemy in a single shot, including bosses. Not only that, but a charged blast can take out an entire group of enemies instantly. It can be a bit slow, but that’s hardly a downside when it’s this destructive. It takes commitment though; you must beat the game twice, once on Normal and once on the unlocked Professional, in order to use it.
