Welcome to MojoPlays, and today, we’re taking a look at the 10 Best “Legend of Zelda” Mods! With dozens of games across the franchise, “Zelda” fans have been able to craft some pretty impressive mods and ROM hacks over the years. Which Zelda mod do you think folks should check out? Did it make our list? Let us know in the comments!
As expected, “Tears of the Kingdom” has exploded with all kinds of mods since it launched back in May 2023. Of course, there are plenty of mods that change the music, Link’s appearance, weapons, the usual stuff. However, we can’t get over this mod that grants Link a pair of anti-gravity pants. Now, you can explore Hyrule with near-complete freedom and almost no consequences! Given the insane amount of physics featured in the game, this mod only adds an extra layer of fun to the combat and exploration.
Fair warning, we came across a massive assortment of “Breath of the Wild” mods. So, don’t be surprised if you see several on this list. The first we’d like to recognize is one where Zelda replaces Link as the player character. This turns “Breath of the Wild” into one hell of a fever dream. Is Zelda teaming up with a clone of herself or an identical twin? Or is there some weird Zelda-ception happening where her vision of Hyrule is in danger and Calamity Ganon is really some blight on her mental being that could turn her into an evil ruler? …No, it’s just a mod - it can’t get THAT deep…can it?
“Wind Waker” is so beloved by many that it is hard to imagine ever wanting to change anything about it, even if it means installing a mod. However, if you’re one of those players that wants to be kept on their toes, you can nab this randomizer. As the name implies, this will change the position of every single item in the game. And just to make sure your runs are playable, you’ll start off with the open world, and most of the cutscenes have been removed. Hope you can find what you need quickly!
The Hinox is such a grotesque beast for a “Zelda” enemy that it’s easy to imagine just about anything else replacing it and retaining the terrifying presence. So, why not replace it with, say, Shrek? Why not? Hey, no game can be modded without throwing Shrek somewhere! Besides, he actually fits the role of the Hinox quite well. Just look at that vicious stance and garish face. It’s like he’s always been in the game and we just never knew about it.
There are some really cool “Zelda” ROM hacks to go dig up. Of them all, “Dawn and Dusk” is absolutely at the top of our list for “Ocarina of Time” mods! Basically, this is the “Ocarina of Time” for 64DD that we never got, and yes, you can play it on an actual 64DD if you have one and get this on a cartridge. Link is now the descendant of a priestess who fought against a dark force many ages ago. That beast rises to try and take over Duskside once more. With new locations and new takes on classic “Zelda” tropes, every “Zelda” fan needs to check this out.
The fun thing about Thomas mods is that you never know what role the really useful engine will play. Bosses, NPCs, a template for your custom character’s face, he’s been through it all. This time, though, Link will play Mister Conductor as Thomas replaces Epona as your mount! Now, you can explore Hyrule without the need for rails and deliver a real pain train to whatever dumb Bokoblins are unaware of your presence. Choo choo, fools!!
It’s a real shame that Linkle has been left stranded in the first “Hyrule Warriors”, never to be featured in another “Zelda” game, let alone mentioned, ever again. Gentlemen (and ladies), we can bring her back. We can make things right once again. We have the technology. Yes, this mod just replaces Link with his female counterpart. And now, the world is right again. …You weren’t expecting a special mechanic to be added in, were you?
Well, how about this for special mechanics: you can make “Breath of the Wild” realistic in the most annoying ways possible. As the name implies, Survival of the Wild adds in a bunch of survival mechanics, thus forcing you to play the game in a vastly different way. The lighting is now more drastic to reflect a more realistic daytime and nighttime, the weapon durability is decreased drastically, environments have been strengthened, fast travel is disabled, weather is more brutal, and Link now has a hunger meter. Like we said, it’s annoyingly realistic, but we kind of dig it.
Don’t worry, this is the last “Breath of the Wild” mod before we end the video. Thing is that Link is not fit to be the true hero of Hyrule. Hot take, yes, but it’s the truth. This mod replaces him with Waluigi. Finally, Hyrule is getting not the hero it needs, but the hero it deserves. In all seriousness, it is just a cool mod that adds more absurdity than “Breath of the Wild” asked for, and Waluigi’s uncanny presence makes the dramatic cutscenes comedy gold.
If there was any “Zelda” ROM hack we could play again and again, it’s this one. “Dark Hyrule Fantasy” is a unique and original ROM hack that gives “Ocarina of Time” more of a gothic aesthetic to its environments and characters. Fair warning, it still is in development, but from what we’ve seen of the Town and the first dungeon, it’s worth keeping your eye on this one!
