The 11 Best PS5 RPGs
Welcome to MojoPlays, and today, we’re taking a look at the 10 Best Role-Playing Games to play on PlayStation 5!
“Lies of P” (2023)
Let’s face it - “Bloodborne” isn’t ever coming back. However, we do have a game that is better than “Bloodborne”, which is something we never thought we’d ever say. “Lies of P” is essentially the successor and surpasses every expectation. Not only does it have refined controls and combat like the baby of FromSoftware and Sony, it is also technically sound. That’s right, a buttery smooth sixty frames per second with crisp visuals and the same balance of combat, inventory management, and stat-building. If only Sony allowed a remake, remaster, or even a patch, maybe we’d be singing a different tune, but alas, no.“Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth” (2024)
If you thought the “Yakuza” and “Like a Dragon” games were massive before…oh, you haven’t seen anything yet. “Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth” lives up to its subtitle. There is so much to do outside of the main story and addicting turn-based combat, which has been improved with new mechanics and controls. But you also have a plethora of substories to discover, an arcade loaded with classic SEGA titles like “SEGA Bass Fishing”, an in-game trading card game called Sujimon Battle, and a whole “Animal Crossing”-like mode in Dondoko Island! This is a game that wants you to literally live in the world while taking part in fun, classic RPG action. Honestly, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio really outdid themselves here!“Tales of Arise” (2022)
Everyone has their own favorite “Tales” game from Bandai Namco. You can still play “Zestiria”, “Berseria”, “Vesperia”, and “Symphonia” thanks to the backwards compatibility, but “Tales of Arise” is the one that was made with the PS5 in mind. Admittedly, it is your standard “PS5 upgrade” fare - 4K resolution support, a performance mode for those who love high framerates, DualSense functionality for those immersive moments, you get the idea. We’re really recommending this one for the weebs who want their JRPGs looking nice and pretty on their TVs, and “Tales of Arise” does pop with the PS5’s functionality.“Honkai: Star Rail” (2023)
If you want something more like an action RPG, then “Genshin Impact” is an obvious choice for you. However, if you want something a bit more traditional, “Honkai: Star Rail” is from the same developers and is equally addicting. Explore beautiful locations among the stars and use attacks to bring down groups of enemies with beautifully vicious powers. Of course, there are gacha mechanics implemented for the game’s monetization, but even if you’re on a tight budget, you’ll get a ton of fun out of “Honkai: Star Rail”.“Persona 3 Reload” (2024)
While you can play “Persona 5 Royal” through the PS5’s backwards compatibility with PS4 games, “Persona 3 Reload” is worth every penny, too. A remake of the 2006 PS2 original, you play as a young high school student who lost his parents and has begun to encounter the Midnight Hour. From there, you join S.E.E.S., a group of students who specialize in keeping demonic shadows from wreaking havoc in the real world. You’ll form friendships between party members and locals while traversing the seemingly endless tower known as Tartarus and jamming out to the tunes of Atsushi Kitajoh, Shoji Meguro, Azumi Takahashi, and rapper Lotus Juice. While it may not be as long as “Persona 4” or “Persona 5”, you’ll love this just as much as those.“Sea of Stars” (2023)
Suppose you want an RPG more reminiscent of the SNES or even the days of the Game Boy Advance. “Sea of Stars” would be the perfect fit for you. In addition to a beautiful story about friendship, “Sea of Stars” doesn’t tack on too many mechanics and keeps things tough but fair. So long as you’re keeping a full inventory of healing items and other trinkets, you’ll be fine. So, it’s a nice, bite-sized RPG that you can sit back and relish in. And it doesn’t ask for a high admission price compared to most games these days.“Unicorn Overlord” (2024)
The most recent title on our list, “Unicorn Overlord” is everything we could have wanted. Developer Vanillaware has knocked it out of the park once again, delivering a tactical RPG with breathtaking visuals in character and environmental art, a beautiful score, and a deep combat system that implores you to consider each squad’s strengths and weaknesses before giving orders. It demands a good amount of patience and planning yet keeps things simple enough for anyone to grasp the mechanics within the first couple of battles. Really, would you expect anything less from Vanillaware? Go buy “Unicorn Overlord” already!"Dragon's Dogma II" (2024)
"Dragon's Dogma II" is everything we could have wanted and more! From the deep character customization to the epic boss fights and wonderful emergent gameplay, this is yet another fantastic action RPG to add to an already stacked year for RPG fans. Sure, some may complain about the capped thirty frames per second, but even at that, the game runs well enough to where it doesn't really affect gameplay. Whether you enjoyed the original "Dragon's Dogma" or have never played it, this is still a title any PS5 owner should pick up.“Elden Ring” (2022)
You can play several FromSoftware games on PS5 already. Heck, you may even want to check out “Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon”. But “Elden Ring” is truly the studio’s magnum opus as it embodies every strength FromSoftware has honed in on over the years: combat, traversal, world design, storytelling, enemy variety, boss fights, puzzles, everything. It teaches you what you need to know in basics, and then, lets your curiosity determine your journey. And with the new DLC on the horizon, now is a great time to nab a copy or boot up the game again.“Baldur's Gate 3” (2023)
Whereas many RPGs keep their experiences linear, Larian Studios exceeded expectations. While it does boast the same features you would expect from an RPG - custom characters, turn-based combat, and the like, it’s how it implements and expands upon those systems. Just about everything in the game will play according to your class and stats whether it's a unique dialogue choice or a chance at increasing your stats or simply testing your skill checks. “Baldur's Gate 3” invites you into its world and plays with you rather than restricts you to one path. In other words, you have a monumental RPG that gives you plenty of reason to replay it with different builds.“Final Fantasy VII Rebirth” (2024)
“Final Fantasy VII Remake” was already such an incredible game that we would have been fine if “Rebirth” matched the same level of quality. And yet, Square Enix went above and beyond for this! Not only does “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth” maintain excellence in the writing, visuals, and animation, it features a wealth of different opportunities to bolster your party through developing relationships, doing fun side quests, and so much more. Plus, you have an immensely entertaining card game in Queen’s Blood! If you ever needed an excuse to finally buy a PlayStation 5, this is the one! What’s your favorite RPG to play on PlayStation 5?
