April Fools is always a big day for video games, companies always use it as a chance to get some fun promotion, or just make a good joke.
Welcome to MojoPlays, and these are our picks for the Best Video Game April Fools Jokes of 2019! April Fools has been given a new meaning thanks to the gaming industry. Whether they're truly real or fake, these were our favorite gaming gags from April Fools 2019.
Mass Effect Body Pillow
BioWare
Look, if you have a body pillow, we won’t judge. After all, it’s important to be comfortable while you sleep… assuming that’s what you’re doing. Although, we’re not sure how “Mass Effect” fans would feel about a body pillow of Garrus Vakarian. We don’t typically think of this former C-Sec officer turned vigilante as “cuddly,” but, hey, if you’re into that sort of thing, more power to you. To make things even more bizarre, this wasn’t just an April Fools joke; you can actually pre-order these body pillows. If you want to shell out thirty bucks for this ridiculous thing, have at it.
A New IP
PlatinumGames
Whenever we hear that Platinum Games has a new game to announce, all eyes are on them. Not every one of their titles has been a stellar success, but it’s common knowledge that Platinum knows how to make some damn fine action games! Of course, they had put out a teaser for a fake game. Platinum Games “announced” a business simulation action game, starring a kickass dude bearing the Platinum logo on his chest. For as ridiculous of a concept as this is, our curiosity was piqued. How would Platinum make an action game crossed with business simulation? Had the studio not reminded us it was April 1, we probably would have thought this was real.
Conan Chop Chop
Funcom
If last year’s “Conan Exiles” didn’t satisfy your barbarian taste buds, Funcom announced another “Conan” title for April Fools. Behold! “Conan Chop Chop”! Wait, you thought those ultra HD pecs were the game? No no no, THIS [show stick figure game] is “Conan Chop Chop”! Now, you can plunder across randomly-generated dungeons in stunning 12k resolution with a 360-degree camera and a VVR headset! Given that a few free games were released on April Fools Day, we were excited to get our hands on this! We’d love to see a “Conan” game with a derpy art style! And then, we clicked on the link in the description box… Yep, it’s an old-fashioned Rickroll.
Corsair Game Launcher Launcher
Corsair
There are WAY too many game launchers to keep track of these days. With publishers trying to save a quick buck by making their own, it’s making consoles look like the best place to be. Luckily, Corsair has come to save the day with the Corsair Game Launcher Launcher. This product would have organized all of your game launchers under a single launcher while also keeping your friends lists separated. With the ridiculous monetization as an exception, we would have loved for this to be real. While this was merely Corsair’s April Fools gag, it was nice to see a company call others out on their BS.
Waluigi in “Mortal Kombat 11”
GameStop
Guys, let’s face it - Waluigi is never going to be in ”Smash Bros. Ultimate.” Besides, it looks like he has a more welcoming home over at Netherrealm Studios. That’s right! The mischievous purple punk is making his way to “Mortal Kombat 11”...or so we would like to think. GameStop’s official Twitter account put up an ad showing Waluigi with some fiery coins and the MK11 logo. Looks like Ed Boon tweeted “believe nothing” on April 1st for a reason. On the other hand, maybe there’s a chance for some Switch-exclusive costumes? We can only dream…
DOOM: The Joy of Slaying
id Software
As revealed by the recent QuakeCon news, we are in the Year of “Doom”, and what better way to celebrate it than with a TV show? The DOOM Twitter account revealed “a new DOOM experience for the artist in everyone”. Ladies and gentlemen, “DOOM: The Joy of Slaying”! Honestly, this has the be the funniest gag on this list. The Doom Slayer dressed as Bob Ross? Look, id Software, you can’t just show us something like this and forget it ever happened. This MUST be an alternate costume for “Doom: Eternal”. We demand it!
Here Comes a New Challenger!
Bandai Namco
We know Season 2 of Tekken 7 just ended, but we’re already hungry for new fighters. Bandai Namco needs something to get us hyped for the third season of characters, and dammit, they almost had us! For April Fools, both the Bandai Namco and Tekken Twitter accounts announced that series director Katsuhiro Harada would be a playable character, showing off an idle stance and victory pose. We really wanted to believe this was real. After all, they’ve made a character model of Harada-san! This would have been an awesome chance to put him in as free DLC! Alas, the prank has confirmed that this may never come to fruition, no matter how much we beg.
EVERYTHING is on Switch
IGN
How many times have you heard someone say “that would be perfect for the Switch.” Let’s face it, it would be way easier to point out the few games that WOULDN’T be great on Nintendo’s game-changing console. For their annual April Fools Day Prank, IGN put out a fake Nintendo Direct that announced that pretty much EVERYTHING was coming to Nintendo Switch. And not just games. Every “Zelda” game, every Nintendo game, “Overwatch”, “Metal Gear Solid 2”, Xbox One X, PlayStation, TurboTax, Carmax, you name it. It was all heading to Switch. IGN has topped themselves as they do every year. We just hope the actor didn’t break his fingers from all that snapping.
R.O.N. - The New Voice of Gaming
Nvidia
Are you in need of a new personal assistant? Want one that is tailored to your needs as a gamer? Look no further than Nvidia’s newest product - R.O.N., the new voice of gaming! According to Nvidia’s website, R.O.N. can create distractions for anyone about to interrupt your game. R.O.N. can also argue with online trolls for you, possibly forcing them to quit the Internet. Maybe it’s most innovative feature is the Rage Converter, R.O.N.’s translation feature that turns toxic remarks into supportive statements. This may be a fake product, but that didn’t stop us from signing up to be notified when it's ready. One day, R.O.N. will be real. You’ll see!
For Honor + Rabbids
Ubisoft
If there was any sign that April Fools was gonna get ludicrous this year, it was when we woke up to this news. Ubisoft tweeted out a video showing the Rabbids in their medieval war game, “For Honor”. Ok, pretty good joke. I mean, come on...the Rabbids in “For Honor”? How stupid of an idea would that be- it’s real? It’s totally real. For all of April Fools Day, “For Honor’s” non-player soldiers were replaced with Rabbids, complete with plungers and toilet scrubbers. Even some of the voiceover was replaced with the Rabbids gibberish! We may have enjoyed this limited time event, but we’re sure many Rabbids haters stayed off the servers that day.
