#3 The Suit Makes The Man
For superheroes, clothes and accessories are hella important. Whether it’s tights, capes, boots, belts, bracelets, helmets, rings, glasses, chainmail shirts, the costumes and uniforms that our heroes wear are crucial to their characters and powers. I mean, just LOOK at T’Challa. The Black Panther is one badass mofo. And that’s also true for his doppelganger in this trailer: Michael B. Jordan’s Erik Killmonger (Marvel loves this evil twin angle. We saw it in “Ant Man,” “Iron Man” and “The Hulk”.). His Golden Jaguar suit is also pretty (terrifyingly) awesome. It’s chock full o’ vibranium, threaded through with gold, can mask itself holographically in some weird ninja skillz, and boasts a jaguar mask that you’d see in your (very stylish) nightmares. Bring it on.
#2: The Revolution Won’t be Televised, But It Might be Filmed
Black Panther is one woke movie, and that’s going to be reflected in its soundtrack and choice of music. In this trailer we get a mash-up of two banging’ tracks: First up is the signature song/poem from the legendary Gil Scott-Heron, with its proud refrain: The Revolution Will Not be Televised. You won’t hear that in, say, “The X-Men”. And intercut with that is Vince Staples’ recent banger “BagBak”, a searing take on social justice (and the lack thereof) in the USA. And the last trailer featured a Run The Jewels track, and you won’t get any more politically vocal than Killer Mike’s verses. This is one movie that is not shying away from tackling the big issues and won’t be skirting thorny political questions. Through music, it’s addressing them head-on.
#1: Wakanda is Like Blade Runner Meets Planet Earth
We finally get a detailed look at T’Challa’s home base in this trailer, and to quote Kendrick Lamar: DAMN. This comic book wonderland is African, futuristic and awesome. In the comics, Wakanda is the world’s most advanced technological city, having been walled off by T’Challa so as not to be exploited for its Vibranium and other natural resources. So it developed into a tech wonderland, and that’s reflected in this trailer’s gleaming spires, rockets, robots and shiny metal. But this is all set in a stunning landscapes of waterfalls, towering mountains and lush greenery that looks like it should be narrated by Richard Attenborough. We can’t wait to see more of it.
