Everything We Know About the Creatures from A Quiet Place

Everything We Know About the Creatures from A Quiet Place
VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton WRITTEN BY: Nick Spake
These terrifying horror monsters are as mysterious as they are dangerous. For this list, we'll be looking at all the spine-chilling details that've been confirmed concerning the mysterious creatures from this horror franchise. Our countdown includes They're Aliens, They're Always Listening, They're Not Sapient, and more!

#10: They’re Aliens

When we’re given our first glimpse of the creatures hunting down humanity, we’re too traumatized to even contemplate what just charged by. With razor-sharp teeth, digitigrade posture, and no eyes, the creatures could be mistaken for human experiments gone horribly wrong. The creatures aren’t of this world, however. While the first film hints at this, John Krasinski later confirmed in an interview, “They are absolutely aliens.” The sequel’s opening scene provides more insight, as the extraterrestrial creatures begin falling from above in the Abbott family’s hometown. Based on Lee’s whiteboard, we can deduce that New Delhi, Singapore, London, Bogota, Moscow, and Boston were hit as well. Shanghai, Peru, and Mexico are among the other reported sites attacked, showing the vast scope of this alien invasion.

#9: Their Home Planet

While we know that the creatures are extraterrestrial, we’ve yet to see their world portrayed on screen. Krasinski painted a grim picture in an interview, however. According to the director, there’s no light on their home planet, hence why they don’t need eyes to function. The aliens adapted to their environment, hunting with their hearing and developing bulletproof exteriors. Krasinski also confirmed that there are no humans where they come from. This likely means that the aliens are the dominant species on their pitch-black homeworld. It remains unknown what other creatures might’ve occupied the planet, but the aliens probably hunted some other lifeform before being introduced into our ecosystem. What we do know is that Earth at least gives humans a home team advantage… slightly.

#8: How The Creatures Got to Earth

Although the creatures have keen hunting instincts, their levels of intelligence remain somewhat vague. In any case, it’s safe to say that they haven’t invested much time in aerospace engineering or mastering intergalactic travel. So, how exactly did the aliens wind up on our planet? Krasinski suggested that their planet was destroyed in an explosion. Thanks to their robust bodies, the aliens were able to endure by hitching rides on meteorites, which carried them to Earth. Their armor also allowed them to survive impact upon arriving. Thus, their presence on our world was an act of God. Not only was it out of our control, but it was beyond their control as well. It wasn’t long until the aliens took control of the situation, though.

#7: Death Angels

As far as we know, the creatures don’t necessarily have an official name. However, one of the newspaper clippings on the Abbott family’s wall dubs them “Death Angels.” It’s unclear if this is just a catchy headline or the generally accepted term for the aliens. Either way, it’s a simple yet fitting title. Of course, the death part speaks for itself. While the creatures don’t have wings like an angel, their limbs do possess qualities similar to that of a bat. It’s not a stretch to call bats “angels of the night.” So, we can definitely see certain parallels in the so-called “Death Angels.” Whatever you call them, it’s best not to say their name out loud because it could be your last words.

#6: Armored Skin

It’s established early on that the aliens’ armored plating is virtually impenetrable, having survived the destruction of their planet and an explosive arrival on Earth. At most, bullets and bombs are mild inconveniences. Even the military is helpless against them. If anything, the noise from human weaponry is likely to attract another alien or even a pack. Thankfully, if you can get past their armored skin, the aliens aren’t as invincible as they seem. Behind their armored heads are sensitive ears and flesh, which are vulnerable to firearms and blunt forces. The tricky part is getting the aliens to open their armored plating, especially when they’re in attack mode. Once you know their weakness, however, there’s a chance you may live to tell the tale.

#5: No Eyes, No Problem

It’s been said that eyes are windows into the soul. Well, the aliens have no eyes, which we guess speaks volumes about their soulless nature. Even if the aliens did have eyes, it’s not like they could’ve seen anything on a homeworld with zero light. Of course, just because a being is blind doesn’t mean that they can’t thrive. While the aliens lack sight, they compensate for this with heightened strength, speed, and - most notably - hearing. Nevertheless, their blindness does give humans a marginal advantage. You could come face to face with a creature, but as long as you don’t make a peep, it’s possible that they’ll leave without noticing your presence. That said, keeping your heavy breathing under control is easier said than done.

#4: They’re Always Listening

The creatures’ greatest strength is their sense of hearing. Whether it’s a crying baby or a battery-operated toy, sound is the beacon that lures the aliens to their prey. Even accidentally stepping on a stick or leaf could alert them. Before you have time to react, you might already be dead. While humans can communicate through sign and body language, the creatures solely rely on sound, communicating with clicking noises. When the aliens want to get an extra earful, they lift their armored plating. Their sensitive hearing can also be their greatest weakness, especially if you have a cochlear implant and microphone on hand. Rushing water helps to drown out other noises as well, allowing people to talk without attracting attention.

#3: They’re Not Good Swimmers

Aside from masking our voices, water has other benefits in humankind’s fight against Death Angels. Despite having heavy armor, the creatures can still run faster than any human. It’s when they fall into the water that the armor suddenly becomes a weakness. The armor is so dense that the aliens quickly drown in deep bodies of water. Even without the armor, their bodies don’t look like they were built for swimming. If the water is shallow, they’re not afraid to get a little wet when they hear something. Your best bet is to either seek refuge on a houseboat or a remote island. Whenever you set sail or dock, make sure that no aliens stowed away. They’re crafty like that.

#2: They Don’t Eat Their Prey

Also in:

It’d be one thing if the creatures were hunting living creatures for sustenance. As some of you might have noticed, though, the creatures never stop to devour their prey. Once they’ve torn one victim to shreds, they move right on to the next one. It’s never spelled out why the aliens don’t eat their kill, although there are a few plausible explanations. Since noise is one of their weaknesses, it only makes sense for them to destroy the source immediately. Eating can also be a noisy activity, especially for creatures with no dining etiquette. So, we doubt the aliens would take the time to savor a meal. We don’t even know if the creatures need to eat, but what they leave behind will entice vultures.

#1: They’re Not Sapient

Also in:

Top 10 Fantastic Harry Potter Creatures

Developing “A Quiet Place,” Krasinski noticed that a lot of invasion movies center on “a thinking alien creature.” He wanted to do something different, focusing on aliens that are more like predators or parasites, ie, “something that can’t be held back.” This doesn’t mean that they’re deprived of any intelligence. The aliens can communicate with each other, adapt to their surroundings, and hunt with efficiency. Unlike humans, though, Death Angels can’t be bargained with and reasoning is pretty much the only thing they won’t listen to. They’re vicious creatures who act based solely on animal instinct, wiping out any potential threat at first sight… or first sound in this case. You may find a shred of humanity caught in their teeth, but nowhere else.
