Developed by Nintendo, Skyward Sword is the swansong for the Wii home console, delivering the studio’s largest and most ambitious adventure to date.
The sixteenth entry in the Legend of Zelda series, Skyward Sword follows in the footsteps of previous installments by having you inhabit an entirely new, yet familiar green-clad hero, on his quest to save the world and a princess named Zelda. Interestingly, the events of Skyward Sword precede the events of Ocarina of Time, making it chronologically the first official game in the fantasy series.
As Skyward Sword begins, this Link is shown to be a youth that has been born and raised in Skyloft, a series of islands floating above the clouds. Leading an otherwise ordinary life, Link soon discovers a magical sword, which transports him to a land beneath the clouds, which is inhabited by evil forces. There he must rescue Zelda, a childhood friend who has been swept away by a mysterious Tornado.
Using the magical sword to travel back and forth between the sky and land below, Link must discover what once separated the two worlds, and what is threatening to destroy his home. This journey soon brings him to the Sky View Temple, where he encounters the Demon Lord Ghirahim (Pronounced “Geer-Rah-Heem”), ruler of the surface world who has begun his own search for Zelda, whom he requires for his devious plans to come to fruition.
Accompanying Link on his quest is the spirit Fi (Pronounced “Fee”), who inhabits his sword and provides him with sage advice. He is also be joined by a giant bird called a Loftwing. This bird can be summoned from various docks and used to transport him between floating landmasses.
Not just a journey across the sky and land, Link must also venture into the Siren World, an alternate reality inhabited by dangerous and invulnerable Guardians. There, players must collect Tears of Light in order to stun their pursuers and escape.
In terms of Gameplay, Skyward Sword’s takes full advantage of the Wii MotionPlus peripheral, allowing for one-to-one motion control when wielding your sword or other weapons. As such, combat involves more than timed attacks, but an added level of precision.
Players can also wield such iconic items as the shield, bow, slingshot and bombs. Meanwhile, new items are present, such as the Harp, a magical musical instrument, and the Beetle, a tool that Link controls to retrieve items, place bombs or cut items hanging from the ceiling. Interestingly, Link will be able to upgrade these items with treasures and artifacts that he recovers.
New to the series is Skyward Sword’s stamina meter. This is used to perform such actions as sprinting or running up walls. Players will also find this game’s maps a lot clearer and easier to read. The Heads-Up Display can also be toggled off.
Another new addition is the consumption of potions in real-time, rather than pausing the action around the player. Link is also portrayed as right-handed, a major change for the series which is meant to accommodate the vast majority of gamers. Unfortunately, there is no way to toggle this for lefties.
The largest game in the series, The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword is a massive game that will take over 35 hours to run through, with another dozen hours of side quests and extras. Because of its incredible production values, thrilling action, adventure and puzzles, this is the game Wii owners have been waiting for.
