From the troubled development of "Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2" to the much-anticipated "Assassin's Creed Shadows," discover why these titles are taking longer than expected. Whether it's for enhanced graphics or narrative polish, each delay promises a better gaming experience. Titles like “Bye Sweet Carole” and “Kingdom Come: Deliverance II” also make an appearance, highlighting developers' commitment to quality over rushed releases. Are any of your favorites on this list?

“Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2” (2025)

If you’ve been keeping up on news of this game’s development, you know it has been troubled to say the least. A sequel to the 2004 cult classic based on the tabletop RPG, “Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2” was announced back in 2019 for a March, 2020 release window. Many people working on it have since left, either by their own decision or not, which has led to multiple delays. In 2021, publisher Paradox Interactive announced that the developer, Hardsuit Labs, was no longer working on it, and the game was almost canceled. The Chinese Room was announced as the new developer in 2023, and a late 2024 release window was given. Sadly, in August of this year, it suffered yet another delay, this time to the first half of 2025.

“Bye Sweet Carole” (2025)

Two things that are exceptionally difficult to create are video games and hand-drawn animation. “Bye Sweet Carole” is a Horror fantasy game with visuals inspired by classic Disney movies. Set in Britain during the early 1900s, it follows a young girl, Lana, digging into the disappearance of her best friend and uncovering a twisted, magical world along the way. It was announced in 2021, revealed in 2023, and was given a broad 2024 release window. However, in August of this year, it was pushed back to an unspecified date in 2025. The update came with news of what extra time would be spent on, including improved lighting effects and reworked cutscenes and gameplay. It looks incredibly enticing already, so more time will only help.

“Kingdom Come: Deliverance II” (2025)

The original “Kingdom Come: Deliverance,” released in 2018, gained a passionate following thanks to its historical focus. According to developer Warhorse Studios, which began work on a sequel in 2019 and has grown significantly since then, the next chapter will feature multiple elements they couldn’t include in the first. Picking back up on the hero, Henry, players will fight against the forces of Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund during civil war in the 15th Century. The game was announced in April of 2024 with a plan to release towards the end of the year. That turned out to be fairly premature, since the game was pushed back just a few months later, in August. It will now be released on February 11th, 2025.

“Nivalis” (2025)

Ion Lands really loves itself a cyberpunk setting. After releasing the 2020 adventure game, “Cloudpunk,” the developer’s next game is “Nivalis,” set in the titular setting from its previous release, but with different gameplay. The life sim will give players total control in how they spend their time and what profession they choose to chase, starting small and building up to gain glory and wealth. While players were initially meant to enjoy it sometime this year, the developer issued a delay back in June. It seems “Nivalis” has grown grander than they had imagined; the update came with a trailer showing off new locations and introducing a key new character in Ava, along with a new release window of Spring, 2025.

“Tails of Iron II: Whiskers of Winter” (2025)

With its Souls-like gameplay, strong art style, and unique premise, 2021’s “Tails of Iron” gained a lot of love. It followed a young rat warrior, fighting to defend his kingdom from an army of frog invaders. Despite that set-up, it was actually pretty dark. It’s not something we would’ve necessarily expected to get a sequel of. So it came as a nice surprise when one was announced in March of 2024. Focusing on a new character and conflict, only a 2024 release window was given. However, in August, publisher United Label stated the game had been pushed back to February, 2025. Along with a new trailer, the update came with several gameplay features, as well as confirmation that Doug Cockle, Geralt of Rivia himself, was returning as the narrator.

“Little Nightmares III” (2025)

Although the original developer on the series, Tarsier Studios, was purchased by Embracer Group in 2019, publisher Bandai Namco plans on continuing with the “Little Nightmares” IP. A third game was revealed in 2023 and is being worked on by Supermassive Games, known for “Until Dawn” and “The Dark Pictures Anthology.” It will follow two new children trapped in a horrific setting, each with slightly different mechanics. You can either play alone with an AI companion or in co-op. It was given a general 2024 release window. But then in May of this year, the team revealed it had been pushed back to 2025 to ensure the game’s quality is of the highest caliber. We’ll have to wait a little longer on anything specific.

“Hyper Light Breaker” (2025)

If you were one of the many to fall in love with 2016’s “Hyper Light Drifter,” and its successor, 2021’s “Solar Ash,” you were probably excited to hear about another game in the works. Being an open world roguelike with the option to play with two others, “Hyper Light Breaker” looks to be an expansive step up from its predecessors. Developer Heart Machine and publisher Arc Games revealed the title in 2022 and planned to release it in early access in 2023. However, it clearly hit a few roadblocks. It was pushed back to Summer 2024, but, once again in August, it was delayed to early 2025. Here’s hoping that the new window sticks.

“Replaced” (2025)

Revealed back in 2021, we’ve had our eyes on “Replaced” ever since. Set in the alternate, dystopian 1980s, it follows an AI trapped in a human body. As the world around us crumbles, we’ll dig into mysteries of the corrupt ones governing Phoenix-City, the game’s world. Combat looks to be fluid and tense, but the visuals are also very impressive. It utilizes pixel art, but with dynamic lighting and camera work to give it modern style. Originally intended for a 2022 release, it’s another game that has been hit by several delays. The latest came in August of this year, when developer Sad Cat Studios gave it a blanket 2025 release.

“Avowed” (2025)

Obsidian Entertainment is usually trustworthy when it comes to delivering solid action RPGs. Announced in 2020, “Avowed” looked to be their take on an open, “Skyrim”-like, first-person adventure, but with elements closer to the studio’s previous works like a heavy focus on companions and a more streamlined narrative. Along with it being set in the “Pillars of Eternity” universe, the developer’s track record made it one of our most anticipated games of the year. However, like many games on this list, it was delayed back in August, with Xbox stating it was to give players more breathing room with their backlogs. The new date, though, is February 18th, 2025. And that month is starting to get pretty crowded, too.

“Assassin’s Creed Shadows” (2025)

There are a lot of eyes on “Assassin’s Creed Shadows,” belonging to one of, if not the most popular franchise at Ubisoft. Fans have been craving a samurai entry for a long time, and the game drew significant conversation upon the reveal that historical figure Yasuke would be one of two protagonists. The studio’s financial performance has been on the decline, as has its reputation following several controversies. Due to the poor performance of “Star Wars Outlaws,” which had the highest budget of any Ubisoft game, “Shadows” was delayed from its November 15th release date for further polishing and will now launch February 14th, 2025. See what we mean by ‘crowded?’ Hopefully, these extra months get the game to a state that satisfies players.
