Top 20 Shocking Pregnancy Reveals in Movies

Top 20 Shocking Pregnancy Reveals in Movies
VOICE OVER: Phoebe de Jeu WRITTEN BY: Joe Shetina
These pregnancy reveals had our mouths on the floor. For this list, we'll be looking at movie scenes where a character's pregnancy is revealed in a memorable or downright bizarre way. Our countdown includes "Fatal Attraction," "Dogma," "Knocked Up," and more!

#20: Ana Grey
“Fifty Shades Freed” (2018)

Few movie couplings were ever as complicated as the relationship between Ana and domineering billionaire Christian Grey. In this controversial trilogy’s third installment “Fifty Shades Freed,” Ana is shocked to find out she’s pregnant. Her husband’s downright hostile reaction to this turn of events is wild, to say the least. Now, it’s true, their relationship isn’t exactly cookie-cutter, but from his reaction, you’d think no one ever had an unplanned pregnancy before. When he finally storms off, it’s almost a relief. He does come around by the end though, and there’s even a second little Greyling on the way.

#19: Rebecca Taylor
“Nine Months” (1995)

Hugh Grant’s character in this 1995 comedy isn’t ready for kids. So you could say that his girlfriend’s pregnancy is coming at a bad time already. But waiting until he’s behind the wheel to tell him he’s gonna be a father? Talk about bad timing. Herbirth control may be only 97% effective, but telling your boyfriend you’re pregnant while he’s driving? That’s 100% effective if you want to get in a car accident. Luckily, no one is badly hurt here. It’s just the first in a long line of mishaps on this couple’s journey to parenthood.

#18: Nora Charles
“After the Thin Man” (1936)

This witty couple delighted audiences in the 1930s and 40s with their mystery-solving capers. In
The last scene of their sequel film, the couple enjoy some much needed time together after another successful investigation. That’s when Nick realizes that Nor’s has been knitting a baby’s boot. Her pithy response is classic. The most shocking thing about this might be that it made it into the movie at all. The Hays Code of early Hollywood was very particular about references to supposedly ‘indecent’ topics. In the scene, neither Nick or Nora utter the word “pregnant.” It actually makes the reveal much more creative.

#17: Bridget Jones
“Bridget Jones’s Baby” (2016)

Given the title, it’s probably not at all shocking that Bridget Jones gets pregnant in this movie. But the sheer number of revelations involved is something else. With two possible fathers in the mix, Bridget plans at first to keep her pregnancy a secret while she conducts a DNA test behind their backs. She ends up telling both separately, without informing either that they might not be the father after all. When she does finally sit them down to tell them the truth, it shocks not only them, but the staff of an Italian restaurant too.

#16: Jenna Hunterson
“Waitress” (2007)

Jenna is a waitress stuck in a toxic relationship, so when she finds out she has a bun in the oven, it’s not exactly the happiest news. In the moment she tries to cope by escaping into her baking, but even that has its limits. Jenna is so underwhelmed that she even shocks her new doctor when she tells him the news. She plans to keep the baby, but that doesn’t mean she wants it. The scene is a perfect encapsulation of the character: funny and sardonic, but also honest and straightforward. No wonder Nathan Fillion fell for her.

#15: Evelyn Johnson
“Pearl Harbor” (2001)

This much maligned Michael Bay World War II epic features a love triangle between best friends and pilots Rafe McCawley and Danny Walker, and nurse Evelyn Johnson. Rafe and Evelyn fall in love, but after Rafe is thought dead, Danny and Evelyn start a relationship. As luck and movie logic would have it, Danny is mortally wounded in battle. Though the writing is on the wall, Rafe tries to give his friend a reason to hold on. It’s a stunningly melodramatic moment in an already melodramatic movie. And it’s made all the more soapy by Danny’s dying words. Whether you’re invested in the sentimentality, or just can’t believe that this was the script, it’ll leave you with your jaw on the floor.

#14: Alex Forrest
“Fatal Attraction” (1987)

As obsessive book editor Alex Forrest, Glenn Close has news for Michael Douglas: she will not be ignored. Also, she’s pregnant. What starts out as an affair between a married man and a single woman gets very, very real for lawyer Dan Gallagher. When Alex announces she’s carrying his baby, and that she intends to keep it, he knows his marriage and the life he has built is in danger. Alex knows it, too, but her insistence that they can start a family together is what really signals the movie’s turn from a love affair gone wrong to a nightmarish thriller.

#13: Beatrix Kiddo
“Kill Bill: Volume 1” (2003)

Given all its killing, kung fu, and callbacks to retro action flicks, it’s easy to forget that Tarantino’s revenge story all begins with an unexpected pregnancy. The first time we see Uma Thurman as the blood-spattered Bride, she’s facing down the barrel of Bill’s gun. Her last words before he shoots her are completely unexpected … In Volume II, we flash back to Beatrix Kiddo first learning this news earlier, just seconds before an assassin tries to gun her down. They’re both shocking reveals, the former for the audience, and the latter for Beatrix herself - and her would-be assassin.

#12: Morticia Addams
“The Addams Family” (1991)

If you know anything about the Addamses, it’s that they’re not a traditional family. Taking a page from “After the Thin Man,” the first “Addams Family” movie ends with a sweet and surprising pregnancy reveal. Before the credits roll, Morticia shows her adoring husband, Gomez, a onesie she’s knitting for their future child. The storyline continues at the beginning of the next movie with a casual announcement, and a mad dash to the hospital. An unbothered Queen to the end, of course Morticia is completely unfazed by childbirth.

#11: Amy Dunne
“Gone Girl” (2014)

This 2014 adaptation of the Gillian Flynn bestseller features numerous dark twists and turns, but somehow, the pregnancy reveal at the end is the most depressing of them all. After Amy Dunne frames her husband, Nick, for her supposed kidnapping and murder, her psychotic plan culminates in a pregnancy. All this, the lies, the murder, has just been one big excuse to keep their marriage together. Nick is horrified that she thinks he wants to raise a child with her, but Amy believes that his sense of responsibility will win out over his common sense. And she’s right.

#10: Alexander Hesse
“Junior” (1994)

This was a shocking revelation for obvious reasons. “Junior” sees none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger, as Alexander Hesse, becoming pregnant! You’re probably wondering how - and the only explanation we can give is “science”. Alexander is a scientist who needed to prove the fertility drug he and his colleague invented actually worked since he was losing his funding, and the proof is in the pregnancy. Alexander wasn’t supposed to go full term with the pregnancy, but his parental instinct kicked in and hilarity ensued.

#9: Kate Holbrook
“Baby Mama” (2008)

Life can be unpredictable, which Kate finds out in an unconventional way. After being told that her odds of conceiving were slim, Kate chooses Angie to be her surrogate - only things don’t exactly go as planned. Angie initially fakes her pregnancy through in-vitro fertilization until she gets naturally pregnant on her own, and ends up wanting to keep the baby, while Kate has unprotected sex with her new beau Rob. Since she has a T-shaped uterus, Kate doesn’t think she needs protection. You can pretty much guess where this is headed. While at the hospital during Angie’s delivery, Kate faints and discovers she’s pregnant. When she tells Rob, he faints. Don’t you just love a happy ending?

#8: Annie & Nina Banks
“Father of the Bride Part II” (1995)

In the first movie, poor George is having a hard enough time dealing with his daughter getting married, but in the second film, his entire life gets flipped on its head... twice! First he finds out that his daughter Annie is pregnant, which is already enough to put him on edge, and then the biggest shock comes when he finds out his wife is pregnant too. The couple thought that that part of their life was over, with Nina thinking she was going through menopause, but nature had other plans. It was enough to make George question everything and send him crashing to the floor!

#7: Bella Swan
“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1” (2011)

The Twilight series has always been polarizing: either you love it or you hate it, but you can’t deny that they know how to create a dramatic pregnancy reveal. In the fourth movie, Bella and Edward have just gotten married and just two weeks after the ceremony, Bella discovers she’s pregnant. The moment is shocking for a few reasons: we didn’t even know Edward could reproduce (being a vampire and all) and the fetus is only a few days old but Bella can already feel it kick!

#6: Bethany Sloane
“Dogma” (1999)

You can’t get much more dramatic than the pregnancy in “Dogma,” because it’s totally out of this world. There are a few things you should know about Bethany. One: she is the last scion and a distant but direct relative of Jesus. Two: She’s no longer able to have children. Three: she died and was resurrected by God with a capital G. When Bethany is brought back to life, she is simultaneously impregnated, which is a lot to take in for one day. And who should announce her pregnancy other than Alan Rickman, who plays Metatron, the voice of God? How simply divine!

#5: Padme Amidala
“Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith” (2005)

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away Padmé Amidala told Anakin Skywalker about something wonderful. One of the things that makes this pregnancy revelation so important is the significance behind who the tiny little babies become. Those babies will become Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia; and people who aren’t even fans of the franchise know those two names. There is also the bitter-sweet aspect of knowing that their dad becomes the villain Darth Vader. But let’s focus on the positive, like the secret romance Padme and Anakin have going on. Despite all that is to come, they look truly happy in this brief moment in time.

#4: Emmeline Lestrange
“The Blue Lagoon” (1980)

Following the erotic awakening of its two teenage characters, “The Blue Lagoon” became a cult classic - despite its less than convincing story and acting. As children, the Lestrange cousins are shipwrecked on an island, with an adult who later dies. As teenagers, they ‘discover’ sex, and Emmeline, played by Brooke Shields, becomes pregnant. All she knows though is that there’s something moving in her ‘tummy’. Of course, the audience knows what this means. Their naiveté might be charming, but there’s also something uncomfortable about the whole thing. There’s certainly not another pregnancy reveal quite like it.

#3: Alison Scott
“Knocked Up” (2007)

Ben the stoner and Alison the serious career woman are not exactly a match made in heaven. One of the risks of a very drunken one night stand is, of course, pregnancy. It couldn’t have happened at a worse time either: Alison just received a promotion and Ben, well... he watches movies with naked people for a living. Neither of them takes the news very well. For instance, Alison takes dozens of different pregnancy tests while consuming all the liquids she can find. Then, when Ben finds out, he focuses on how it happened. A discussion about condoms isn’t what Alison was looking for, but in the end they figure things out.

#2: Ellen Ripley
“Alien 3” (1992)

In the midst of an alien invasion on a penal colony, franchise protagonist Ellen Ripley uses the prison’s medical equipment to perform a scan on herself. She fears she may have internal bleeding, but what she finds is much worse. An alien has implanted an embryo in her stomach. This puts Ripley in a terrible position. Not only could the alien specimen kill her at any time, but how do you decorate a nursery for an alien child with acidic blood? In all seriousness, it’s a twist that kicks the film into high gear and sets the stage for a heart-wrenching ending.

#1: Juno MacGuff
“Juno” (2007)

For our number one pick, we had to go with this Oscar-winning coming of age movie. The writing of this movie is truly genius with witty dialogue that contrasts with its serious subject matter. Juno is just 16 when a gallon of Sunny D, multiple pregnancy tests, and a sassy cashier launch her into the strange world of pregnancy. Her parents actually take it pretty well, but that probably has a lot with Juno having a solid plan for the baby. They actually seem more surprised that Paulie Bleeker is the father. It turns out the kid did have it in him after all!
