10 Most Anticipated PlayStation Games for 2023

Ty Richardson

Welcome to MojoPlays, and today, we’re taking a look at our 10 Most Anticipated PlayStation Games for 2023!

PlayStation may not have many first-party titles coming out this year, but Sony still has a stacked schedule for PS4 and PS5 players in other ways. Which game are you excited to play on your PlayStation console? Let us know down in the comments.

“Resident Evil 4” (2023)

A few years ago, many of us were skeptical about RE4 getting a remake as some would argue the original is fine just as it is, even if it doesn’t line up with the newer “Resident Evil” games. On the contrary, this remake understands what audiences are expecting and is making sure to modernize RE4 just enough without sacrificing what made the original so special. The wait is almost over, and as soon as March 24 rolls around, we’re dropping everything else in our lives.

“GrimGrimoire OnceMore” (2023)

In case you have never heard of this game before, “GrimGrimoire” is a hidden gem made for the PlayStation 2 all the way back in 2007. Unfortunately for Vanillaware, the game was a commercial flop, most likely due to the newly released seventh gen consoles at the time. Luckily, this RTS is being given a second chance with this remake releasing on PlayStation 4 and 5 (as well as Nintendo Switch). Now, you too can command your armies of familiars as you explore and defend your school. If you loved the imaginative worlds and luscious art of "Dragon's Crown" and "13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim", then you should grab "GrimGrimoire" and experience one of Vanillaware's very first games.

“Street Fighter 6” (2023)

Three massive fighting game franchises are making their return within the next year, and “Street Fighter 6” seems like it will be the first of the bunch to kick off the fighting game scene for the new generation of consoles. Along with a new look and attitude for Ryu and company, “Street Fighter 6” is introducing an interesting new World Tour mode where you can create your own World Warrior and explore the many landmarks. You’ll also be able to run around and explore the Battle Hub, which will act as a giant online lobby for you to talk to and fight your fellow players. It is perhaps the most ambitious we have ever seen “Street Fighter”, and the RE Engine makes it a real looker. (Seriously, have you seen our queen Cammy?) “Street Fighter 6” will be in our hands June 2, 2023, assuming no delays happen after this video is published.

“Final Fantasy XVI” (2023)

It has been eight years since the last mainline “Final Fantasy” game (not counting “VII Remake”). While contentious in its reception, it's hard not getting psyched for the next entry now that we have a new generation of consoles. “Final Fantasy XVI” looks like it will take full advantage of modern hardware with its impressive spectacle of detailed environments, character models, and effects. But the most interesting part is how Creative Business Unit III is approaching this entry. In an interview with Australian gaming outlet Well Played, producer Naoki Yoshida pointed to “Game of Thrones” as inspiration for the game while Hiroshi Takai, who is co-directing the game with Kazutoyo Maehiro, pointed to “God of War”. Ryota Suzuki, the combat director, cited the “John Wick” and “Blade” movies as inspiration as well. Needless to say, “Final Fantasy XVI” might turn out to be the strangest in the series, but we won’t know until the game’s launch, which is scheduled for June 22, 2023 at the time of this recording.

“Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising” (2023)

Arc System Works has been busy these last few years, having put out a fighting game every year since 2012, ranging from “Dragon Ball FighterZ” to the “BlazBlue” and “Guilty Gear” games. But if you were a fan of the more fantasy-based “Granblue Fantasy Versus” from 2020, well, you might be thrilled to know a sequel is on the horizon. “Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising” will feature every character from the previous game in addition to several new characters that were originally planned to be DLC. Most importantly, the game will utilize rollback netcode for its online functionality, a decision most likely made after “Guilty Gear: Strive’s” success in sales and implementation of the feature. No solid release date has been given for “Rising”, but for now, Arc System Works says to expect it in the later months of 2023.

“Crash Team Rumble” (2023)

Crash and friends have been dormant for a few years since 2020’s “Crash Bandicoot 4”, but you will be able to return to N. Sanity Island (or some semblance of it) with this online spin-off. Oddly enough, this is not a party game nor a fighting game, platformer, or anything you’ve seen from the franchise, but rather…a MOBA. Two teams of four will compete to claim the most Wumpa fruit while blasting and spinning each other. Playable characters include Crash, Coco, Cortex, Dingodile, Tawna, N. Brio, and a mysterious bat creature never seen before. Activision and developer Toys for Bob have been tight-lipped about the game’s full identity and release date, but considering previous marketing campaigns for Crash games, we wouldn’t be surprised if it drops sometime in Summer 2023.

“Pacific Drive” (2023)

No, this is not a game based on the Australian TV series. “Pacific Drive” is a self-described “survival driving” game. Drive towards the center of the Olympic Exclusion Zone as you collect parts to upgrade your car and brave the harsh environments to uncover the mysteries of this eerie place. Developed by the Seattle-based Ironwood Studios, “Pacific Drive” looks to be one of the most interesting indie games coming to PlayStation 5 (as well as Steam and Epic Games Store). Though no firm release date has been announced, Ironwood seems insistent on the game’s 2023 arrival.

“Baldur’s Gate III” (2023)

The world of “Baldur’s Gate” is coming to PlayStation 5, and it’s coming from a rather prestigious developer of RPGs. Larian Studios, the studio behind the legendary RPG series “Divinity”, will be developing “Baldur’s Gate III” for PlayStation 5 (in addition to Mac and PC). The first game being developed by BioWare in 1998, “Baldur’s Gate” has seen a quiet success in other forms, primarily through remasters and re-releases. In other words, this will be the first installment in the franchise since “Dark Alliance II” in 2004. Given Larian’s monumental success with “Divinity: Original Sin” and its sequel, it’s safe to say that “Baldur’s Gate” is in good hands. We’re stoked to see what’s in store for us when it launches August 31, 2023.

“Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” (2023)

Sony’s first-party lineup is glaringly bare for 2023, but in retrospect, does it really have to be full of tentpole games every few months? Regardless of what could have been used to fill the schedule, “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” is Sony’s biggest game scheduled for Fall 2023. Unfortunately, them and developer Insomniac have been keeping their cards close to their chest. So, we can only speculate on the possibilities of co-op and which villains might crop up.

“Final Fantasy VII Rebirth” (2023)

Now, we are well aware that Square Enix has said “Rebirth” is scheduled for a Quarter 4 2023 window, but we should keep “Final Fantasy VII Remake” in mind. “Remake” took quite a long time to develop, announced in 2015 and not releasing until 2020. And even after all that time, the story was not complete, and the retelling of “Final Fantasy VII” is a trilogy. So, who knows what Square is packing into “Rebirth” and saving for the final third act. We aren’t saying it’s impossible for the game to come out this year, but if it gets delayed to 2024, we won’t be surprised.
