10 Most Historically Accurate Video Games

Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we’re counting down our picks for the video games that recreate their historical period best.

“Assassin’s Creed II” (2009)

Ubisoft’s second entry in what’s arguably their flagship series, “Assassin’s Creed,” has a stunning amount of historical detail. Italian cities such as Florence, Venice, and Monteriggioni have all been recreated to an incredible level of detail. Fascinating Renaissance figures such as Lorenzo de Medici and Leonardo da Vinci make appearances, wonderfully capturing the spirit of the time. Players get a glimpse into Renaissance politics, culture, and architecture that's not been matched since its release. Of course, creative liberties are taken, such as everyone speaking modern Italian rather than the cacophony of dialects from the time. Still, these decisions are worthwhile and successfully enhance the gameplay experience.

“Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings” (1999)

Next, it’s real-time strategy classic “Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings.” Standing out for its historical detail, this title allows you to guide a civilization through the Middle Ages. It features a wide range of historically accurate units, technologies, and structures. Each civilization wonderfully portrays its historical counterpart, from the Byzantines to the Mongols. If that’s not enough, you can play historically accurate campaigns, based around figures like Genghis Khan, Saladin, and Joan of Arc. Its meticulous attention to period-specific architecture, military tactics, and economic systems makes “Age of Empires II” not just a game, but a virtual journey through the Medieval era’s most pivotal moments.

“Verdun” (2015)

“Verdun” is a first-person shooter that delivers the most historically accurate portrayal of World War I trench warfare. Released in 2015, it’s renowned for successfully capturing the grim reality of the Western Front. It features authentic weapons, equipment, uniforms, and settings from one of history’s greatest conflicts. Its map and sound design also provide a highly immersive recreation of battles. Unfortunately for the developers, reliving the horrors of trench warfare didn’t sell as well as they’d hoped, meaning it was never particularly popular. Despite this, its dedication to accuracy is monumental and has earned it a small but passionate following. As a compelling glimpse into one of the world’s most devastating conflicts, “Verdun” more than succeeds.

“Rome: Total War” (2004)

Released in 2004, “Rome: Total War” excels at immersing players into Roman military and political life. Its accuracy shines through its masterful depiction of Roman legions, city management, and the political intrigues of the Republic. Historical campaigns, such as the rise and fall of Julius Caesar, offer an exciting way to live out some of the Republic’s most pivotal moments. This game is so well-constructed, it’s even been used by the History Channel to recreate famous battles. If that’s not enough to satisfy you, the Europa Barbarorum mod provides an even more historically accurate experience, still considered the best mod for any “Total War” game. Even on its own, though, “Rome: Total War” is a phenomenal achievement.

“Red Dead Redemption 2” (2018)

Next, we have one of Rockstar’s most celebrated games of all time - “Red Dead Redemption 2.” Featuring a stunningly detailed American frontier, this open-world masterpiece recreates the Wild West with remarkable accuracy. Developers created breathtaking landscapes, wildlife, and towns from the era, which capture the time period’s rugged beauty. From its period-accurate clothing and weaponry to the authentic social norms, this game plunges players into the Western frontier in a way nothing else does. Historical issues from the time are also considered, such as the struggle of the Indigenous peoples and the complexities of a post-Civil War America. Matching this masterfully crafted depiction of the Wild West would be an almost impossible task.

“Brothers In Arms: Hell’s Highway” (2008)

This entry in the “Brothers In Arms” series focuses on Operation Market Garden, an ambitious Allied operation from World War II. “Hell’s Highway” stands out when it comes to attention to detail, from its weapons and uniforms to the realistic recreation of the Dutch countryside. Based on the real story of the 101st Airborne Division of the US Army, it highlights the challenges they faced, while providing an immersive and vivid experience of the war. Its commitment to historical accuracy creates an engaging and even educational glimpse into the latter stages of World War II. “Hell’s Highway” truly excels in delivering a gripping and historically grounded recreation of the intense campaign to liberate Europe from the German regime.

“The Oregon Trail” (1971)

“The Oregon Trail” is a quintessential educational game which offers a painstakingly accurate simulation of 19th-century America’s westward expansion. Released way back in 1971, it lets players experience the challenges faced by pioneers along the Oregon Trail. Since it was originally created for educational purposes, it’s notable for its amazing attention to detail. The game depicts wagon trains and daily life, as well as the hardships encountered on the journey, such as disease, accidents, and resource management. While aspects are indeed simplified for gameplay purposes, these are all worthwhile decisions, and work to make “Oregon Trail” a truly timeless classic in historical gaming.

“Crusader Kings II” (2012)

Released in 2012, “Crusader Kings II” is one of the most celebrated historical simulations of all time. It allows players to manage a Medieval dynasty from any year between 769 and 1453. The game excels in recreating the complexities of medieval society, including political intrigue, diplomatic alliances, and complex systems of government. Its historical accuracy shines through its wonderful recreation of the period. Players can choose from some of the era’s most famous dynasties, interacting and engaging with real figures and events the whole way through. Its complex simulation easily creates rich and dynamic storytelling, which feels completely natural, making it a stand out of historical gaming.

“Kingdom Come: Deliverance” (2018)

Although it received mixed reviews, “Kingdom Come: Deliverance” is still renowned for its dedication to history. The 2018 action RPG immerses players in the 15th-Century Kingdom of Bohemia, which has been meticulously recreated. It features authentically designed towns, castles, and landscapes, all based on an actual region in what would become the Czech Republic. Its high level of detail extends to realistic combat mechanics, with period-accurate weapons and fighting techniques. The developers at Warhorse Studios conducted an amazing amount of research, consulting historians and studying historical documents to ensure maximum accuracy. Their commitment to realism offers a rich medieval experience, making it a true marvel of the genre.

“Europa Universalis IV” (2013)

A game celebrated for its comprehensive and historically extensive simulation of global politics, “Europa Universalis IV” is a grand strategy title that spans from 1444 to 1821. Originally released in 2013, the game has received expansions and support now for over a decade. It’s considered by many players to be the pinnacle of historical simulations, and developer Paradox’s magnum opus. The title excels in many fields, including an exquisitely crafted map that recreates the entire globe in 1444. It also incorporates substantial historical data, which reflects real-world events, leaders, and geopolitical shifts. It’s an impressive showcase for historical video games, even if you can do things like reform the Roman Empire. “Europa Universalis IV” offers an unparalleled experience, making it a definitive entry for history buffs.
