“Mean Girls”

The students of North Shore High are back and more fetch than ever! The iconic 2000s teen comedy, “Mean Girls” is returning to the big screen in January 2024, but this time with a mega musical makeover. Based on the 2017 stage adaption, the flick will feature a brand new cast along with Tina Fey and Tim Meadows reprising their roles. Aside from the splashy song and dance numbers, fans of the Broadway production will enjoy appearances from former cast members, Renee Rapp and Ashley Park. Only time will tell if this remake will live up to the legacy of the original. But one thing is for sure: this movie musical is sure to be a “massive deal”.

“Joker: Folie à Deux”

When it was announced that the sequel to 2019’s “Joker”was going to be a musical, many fans were left scratching their heads. Director Todd Phillips is leading the ambitious project, with Joaquin Phoenix reprising his Oscar winning role as the twisted and deviant, Arthur Fleck. Joining the cast is Lady Gaga as Dr. Harleen Quinzel aka Harley Quinn . While there is a fair bit of mystery surrounding “Joker: Folie à Deux”, moviegoers can definitely anticipate a truly unique experience when it hits theaters in the fall season of 2024.

“Wicked: Part One”

Perhaps one of the most highly anticipated movie musical adaptations of all time, “Wicked’s” journey to the big screen has been years in the making. Rumors of a film version of the long running Broadway show date back to at least the 2010s. Nearly ten years later, Jon M. Chu was announced as the project’s director, along with Ariana Grande playing Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. A few months after the announcements, Chu revealed that the musical would be split into two films, with “Wicked: Part 1” soaring into theaters in November 2024 and “Part 2” the following year.

“The End”

Little is known about the mysterious and enigmatic 2024 film “The End,” but that is what makes it all the more exciting! Directed by Joshua Oppenheimer, the story is about a well-off household hidden away in an underground shelter decades after an Apocalypse. And yes, it is a musical! Starring big names like Tilda Swinton and Michael Shannon, the film began filming in Ireland in 2023. Although there are no trailers or even an official release date yet, rest assured, this is only the beginning of“ The End”.

“Spellbound”

From one of the co-directors of “Shrek”, 2024’s “Spellbound” is set to cast some magic upon film fans in the upcoming year. This animated flick follows a Princess who attempts to put the kibosh on a spell that has broken her fair kingdom in two. Songstress and actress, Rachel Zegler will voice the film’s lead. Joining her is an all-star team including Nicole Kidman, Nathan Lane, Javier Bardem, Jenifer Lewis and Jordan Fisher, just to name a few. At this present time, there is no release date set, but we’re looking forward to being under its spell!

“Mufasa: The Lion King”

Directed by Barry Jenkins, “Mufasa: The Lion King” is one of Disney's newest musicals set to hit the big screen. Predating the events of the 1994 animated film and its 2019 remake, “Mufasa” will follow the king of Pride Rock in his younger years. British actor, Aaron Pierre is voicing the iconic character, along with “The Trial of the Chicago 7” star, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as his brother--turned-enemy, Scar. Just in time for the holiday season, this instant family classic will be roaring into theaters on December 20th, 2024.
