Well, those 20-something-year-olds are now all 30-something-year-olds! It’s been nearly a decade since Pauly D, Snooki, the Situation, and the rest of the gang moved into their Seaside Heights house. Whether you thought it was the worst show on television or the ultimate guilty pleasure, “Jersey Shore” was a cultural milestone upon release and the impression it left can still be felt nine years later, so much so that it inspired a reunion series in 2018. “Jersey Shore” and “Reunion” are three words we weren’t expecting to put together anytime soon, but it just goes to show that time flies when punches are being thrown. 22 Years Ago PaRappa the Rapper Drops His First Beat December 6, 1996 The 90s were bizarrely overrun with rapping animated characters and few overwhelm us with old-school nostalgia quite like PaRappa. Long before there was “Rock Band,” “Guitar Hero,” or even “Dance Dance Revolution,” this cool canine practically gave birth to the rhythm game genre. Released on the original PlayStation under musician Masaya Matsuura’s supervision, the game was praised for its pioneering mechanics and distinctive visual design, even if the characters were literally paper-thin. At twenty-two years old, the game is admittedly starting to show its age, but in a strange way that only adds to the appeal. Going up against Chop Chop Master Onion at his dojo, we’re immediately transported back to a more dope time. 14 Years Ago Numa Numa Turns Gary Brolsma into an Unlikely Superstar December 6, 2004 Although people often regard the internet as a newer innovation, some viral videos have been around long enough to be described as classics. “Numa Numa,” for example, is so old that it actually predates YouTube’s launch by two months. Initially making the rounds on Newgrounds.com, this video turned vlogger Gary Brolsma into an online icon, inspiring countless parodies and memes. The setup might’ve seemed simple with Brolsma lip-synching to O-Zone’s “Dragostea Din Tei,” but his mannerisms and dance moves would rake in over two million views within its first three months on the net. Fourteen years down the line, it’s safe to assume that the internet’s landscape wouldn’t be the same today without “Numa Numa.” 10 Years Ago Adam Richman Becomes the Hungriest Host on TV December 3, 2008 In the mid to late 2000s, TV audiences developed an appetite for food reality programs and this Travel Channel series remains one of the most mouthwatering. When “Man v. Food” premiered in 2008, host Adam Richman set out on a delicious quest to compete in the craziest cuisine challenges the U.S. has to offer. His conquest began in Amarillo, Texas where he took on a 72-ounce steak, resulting in his first of many eating victories. Ten years later, “Man v. Food” is still going strong with Casey Webb now acting as host. For the past decade, both Richman and Casey have both been the envy of anybody who loves to travel and pig out. 5 Years Ago Rick and Morty Venture to Dimension 35-C December 2, 2013 It certainly doesn’t feel like “Rick and Morty” has been on the air for five whole years. That might be because there have only been three seasons consisting of 31 episodes thus far. We’ll never forget the night a drunken Rick first stormed into Morty’s room and nearly wiped out humanity. Since premiering on Adult Swim in 2013, “Rick and Morty” has become one of television’s most celebrated animated shows, even earning a Primetime Emmy. It’s also spawned a plethora of merchandise, inspired numerous one-liners, and sent fans into a frenzy over Szechuan sauce. And to think, this all started with a “Back to the Future” parody that hit the scene almost 12 years ago.
