With this creator behind it, we know this show is going to be good. Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’ll be looking at Everything We Know About Ryan Murphy’s Netflix Series “Hollywood” So Far.
For this video, we’ll be looking at all the information we currently have about this upcoming project.
In case you’re not familiar with him, Ryan Murphy is a multi-talented writer, producer and director who’s best known for his hugely successful show “Glee”. He was also behind other hit programs like “American Horror Story”, “Scream Queens”, and “Nip/Tuck”, and directed “Eat, Pray, Love” starring Julia Roberts. He’s tackled multiple genres including high school comedies, horror and workplace dramas, and with his show “Hollywood” is going somewhere both new and familiar.
Slated as a limited series, “Hollywood” takes us back in time to L.A. in the post World War II era. It follows several different characters trying to make it in the film industry. Murphy describes the show as a "love letter to the Golden Age of Tinseltown”; however, it’s not going to be all glitz and glamour. The show employs a modern perspective, looking at how marginalized people were treated in Hollywood. This includes tackling the treatment of women in the entertainment industry, as well as the sex industry during the period in question. Murphy said the intention is to show “how absolutely everything has changed and nothing has changed."
As far as the cast goes, there are a lot of familiar faces for fans of Murphy’s other work. Notably, David Corenswet is starring in the role of Jack. He also has a major role in “The Politician”, another of Murphy’s shows on Netflix, playing River Barkley - the ex and rival of the main character, Payton. Corenswet described this new project by saying, “there's going to be great clothes and great accents. It's going to be sexy and optimistic. It's really about young people and the excitement of young people seeking opportunity.”
Darren Criss, who’s a frequent collaborator with Murphy, will be playing the role of Raymond. “Glee” fans will undoubtedly recognize Criss as Blaine Anderson of the Dalton Academy Warblers, whose relationship with Kurt made him a fan favorite character. He also played a major figure in another one of Murphy’s projects, “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” that had a much darker edge than his turn on “Glee”. For that role, he took home an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a SAG Award.
Broadway performer Jeremy Pope will play a character named Archie Coleman. There are some other major names attached to the project as well, including Dylan McDermott, Patti LuPone and Jim Parsons. We also know that Mira Sorvino and Rob Reiner will be making appearances.
Murphy has a habit of working with the same people on multiple projects, and “Hollywood” is no exception. He co-created this series with Ian Brennan, who he also collaborated with on “Glee”, “Scream Queens” and “The Politician”. So if you’ve enjoyed those shows, you can expect more of the quick wit and sardonic humor that they’re known for. Murphy and Brennan are both producing, alongside Alexis Martin Woodall and Janet Mock. Mock also helped in penning the screenplay. Three of the cast members, Darren Criss, David Corenswet and Jeremy Pope will also be acting as producers.
“Hollywood” will be hitting Netflix on May 1st, 2020 and will be the first product of the massive deal that Ryan Murphy signed with the streaming giant in 2018. While Murphy had been known for working with Fox, when his contract expired he was wooed by Netflix who offered him a payout of something in the ballpark of $300 million for a five year deal. This news rocked the entertainment industry because of the staggeringly high numbers involved, the likes of which hadn’t been seen before. While Murphy did already create “The Politician” which aired on Netflix, that show was produced by 20th Century Fox TV. “Hollywood” is part of a large slate of projects on the horizon that are being produced as the result of Murphy’s Netflix deal.
Other projects include a miniseries adaptation of “A Chorus Line”, as well as iterations of “The Boys in the Band” and “The Prom”, both Broadway musicals. “The Boys in the Band” will feature the show’s original cast in a film version of the story. “The Prom” will star Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman as well as Awkwafina, James Corden and Ariana DeBose. He’s also working on a prequel to “One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest” called “Ratched” starring Sarah Paulson.
There are a lot of reasons to be excited about “Hollywood” as well as this ongoing partnership, and we can’t wait to see what they come up with next.
