Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we’re looking at 10 mysteries in The Last of Us games. Some of these entries look like they may get answered in the upcoming HBO series. For this list, we’ll be looking at some of the unanswered mysteries and plot holes throughout both The Last of Us Part 1 and 2. If you haven’t played either of The Last of Us games, fair warning, there are spoilers here. Be sure to craft supplies and sneak into the comments to let us know if we missed any mysteries.
The announcement trailer for The Last of Us Part II had fans asking so many questions. In the trailer we see a house full of dead bodies and Ellie playing the guitar. A shadowy figure enters the house and we never really see their face. The figure has the voice of Joel and asks Ellie, “what are you doin’ kiddo? You really gonna go through with this?” Was this shadowy figure just a figment of Ellie's imagination? Most likely, due to Joel being dead and all.
There is a huge part of Joel's story we know little to nothing about. We see how the start of the outbreak affected him and his family and then we get a jump cut to 20 years in the future. We hear small tidbits of what Joel had to do to survive during those years, but they leave us with more questions than answers. We want to know how Joel and Tommy got around the military. Did they bury Sarah? How did Joel cope with the death of his daughter while surviving? Maybe with the HBO series we’ll finally get a few of these questions answered.
The Elders are a group we never actually see in the game, only hearing about them from Lev. What we know about them is that they are part of the Seraphites. Going off a document we can find in the game, we do know their names. We also know The Elders have strict rules and laws to follow, which we learn as we discover more about Lev’s journey and why he ran. It would be cool to see more of this group as they have a more traditional way of living and beliefs.
Bill is one of the most iconic characters in the original Last of Us. Throughout our short time with him we learn about his “partner” Fank. Bill and Frank survived in Lincoln for almost 20 years, setting traps for outsiders and the infected. We know how their story ended with Frank leaving Bill after they didn’t see eye to eye about how to survive. Frank gets bitten and takes his own life. We really know nothing about how these two actually survived in one town for so long. How did they get food and supplies? How many times were they attacked?
We first run into The Rattlers towards the end of our journey in The Last of Us Part II when Ellie goes to finally kill Abby. The Rattlers set up their base in a resort in Santa Barbara and have traps set all throughout, meant to catch both the infected and humans alike. We know little to nothing about the group other than that they’re pretty messed up, chaining infected humans and watching them turn for entertainment among other sadistic things. It would be interesting to see how this group became the way they are. They couldn’t have always been so crazy, right?
How are there no infected animals? You would think that some of the infected would be able to catch say, a pig or something. In the first Last of Us we see a beautiful scene with giraffes, and they all look perfectly healthy and not worried at all. There is a small hint that animals can get infected when listening to some audio from a researcher. The researcher says “They say the tainted batch needs to be put down.” Clearly the monkeys were infected, but from the sounds of it the infection was due to experimenting on the animals, not from the infected.
In the main campaign of The Last of Us, we hear a bit of Ellie and Riley’s short-lived adventure in the mall, and in the “Left Behind” DLC we actually get to play through it. The DLC was a wonderful reminder that even when the world goes to hell, kids can still be kids. The ending however brings us back to the horrifying reality and both Ellie and Riley are bitten. We know Riley dies, but how exactly does it happen? With Ellie being immune, she either had to run or fight.
Before Ellie travels to Santa Barbara, it seems her and Dina are living the family life. As time went on Ellie felt she had to go finish what she started. Dina catches her as she tries to sneak away. Clearly upset by Ellie's choice, Dina went back to the town and when Ellie arrives back home she’s greeted with an empty house. Does she go back to the town to mend her and Dina’s relationship? Do they go back to family life?
We know that Tommy went to Santa Barbara, but did he make it back? We never see him during our travels or while at The Rattlers camp. With Tommy being so beat up, it’s doubtful that he would actually survive. Let's say he did make it to Santa Barabara, The Rattlers would’ve captured him and did who knows what with him. I would like to think maybe he cooled down and went back to the town and mended his and his wife's marriage. But realistically, the infected probably got him.
Sometimes brothers don’t see eye to eye, but Joel and Tommy’s fight must have been pretty huge. The brothers didn’t talk to each other for quite some time. We never really get to know what happened to have the brothers separate other than that they went through some hard times and both looked at the world differently. Whatever happened, it must have been pretty horrific, as Tommy says “I got nothing but nightmares from those days.” Clearly Tommy saw Joel do some pretty bad stuff, but he had to do what he had to do to survive.
