Created by British author Ian Fleming, this British Secret Service agent started out his adventures in twelve novels, and nine short stories, before being adapted to an iconic, and long-running film series.
The character of James Bond was first conceived while the author was on holiday at his Jamaican estate called Goldeneye in 1952. At that time, he came upon the idea of constructing a lethal secret agent of the British government.
Interestingly, the character was modeled after himself, as he was a jet-setting womanizer with a military background; and his real world friend, Bill Dunderdale, an MI6 spy with a love of fast cars and pretty women.
Due to Fleming’s love of bird watching, and desire for a simple name, he labeled the protagonist after an American ornithologist called James Bond. This preference was due to Fleming having imagined a neutral figure that would be used as a blunt instrument, wielded by the government, against exotic foreign enemies. He was even given the coat of arms “The world is not enough” and the designation of 007, a prefix granting him a license to kill.
This prefix is speculated to symbolize a pair of spectacles, as his character would be the eyes of the Queen. Furthermore, 007 was the number of the train that Fleming regularly took to London during his career.
Commander Bond made his first literary appearance in 1953’s “Casino Royale,” a tale inspired by a real-life story centered on covert Intelligence soldiers playing poker against Nazi’s during wartime.
Created as the spy story to end all spy stories, James Bond appeared in regular installments up until Fleming’s death in 1964 at the age of 56. Following this, the character continued to grow in popularity, while other authors wrote his newer adventures. Following this, Bond eventually came to be portrayed on the big screen by actor Sean Connery in 1962’s Dr. No.
The most popular and well-received spy hero of all time, James Bond has gone on to star in over 22 films, be portrayed by six distinct actors, and garner his own series of video games.
