Top 10 Adorable Disney/Pixar Sidekicks
#10: Chip
“Beauty and the Beast” (1991)
Until this little anthropomorphic piece of dishware came along, we bet that you had never felt compelled to hug a teacup! But with his adorable little face, natural curiosity and unbridled enthusiasm, don’t you just want to squeeze him? Of course you do! We all do. But if you’re going to give in to those instincts, maybe get a plush Chip toy, given that he IS rather delicate. The apple of his mother’s eye and a fierce ally and friend to Belle, Chip is living proof that big things can come in small and truly adorable packages.
#9: Jaq & Gus
“Cinderella” (1950)
Speaking of little characters with big personalities… who can resist the charms of these two lovable mice? Rarely seen without one another, these two are the quintessential odd couple. Jaq is quick, both on his feet and in the brains department, while the rather rotund Gus is clumsy and little slow on the uptake. What they share in common however, is mutual affection, a fierce sense of loyalty to their darling Cinderella, and an infectious good nature. With their big eyes and cheery smiles, they're both cute as buttons, but it's the lengths to which they’ll go to make Cinderella happy that makes you truly fall in love with them.
#8: BB-8
“Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens” (2015)
Disney… they sure know how to make a character endearing. Be it a teacup or a robot consisting of a metallic sphere and a half, they know how to take the most unlikely of lovable sidekicks and make them impossibly endearing. Like R2-D2 before him, this Astromech communicates via a series of beeps, boops and whirring sounds, and despite the language barrier, manages to convey emotion, personality and more than his fair share of attitude. From his adorable mannerisms to his precocious attitude, he makes us all want a little BB-8 of our very own. With the introduction of the Porgs in “The Last Jedi”, it seems as if the sequel trilogy will not be lacking in cute characters.
#7: Pascal
“Tangled” (2010)
Ah yes, how could you tell the story of Rapunzel without including her beloved pet…. chameleon? Odd though his inclusion might seem on paper, after seeing the film, it’s hard to imagine Rapunzel without her shoulder-perching best friend. Though Pascal falls into the category of non-speaking animated sidekicks, his facial expressions and body language speak volumes. He is a loyal and loving companion who consistently goes out of his way to cheer up Rapunzel. With his puppy dog eyes and adorable smile, you’d have a hard time feeling blue around him - trapped in a tower or not.
#6: Olaf
“Frozen” (2013)
He might be loud and a bit of a liability at times, but this enchanted snowman’s lovable nature is nonetheless his defining characteristic. This little oddball dreams of summer and all things warm and toasty, which is absolutely hilarious considering his make-up. Constructed by Anna and Elsa when they were young, his figure bears the marks of unskilled hands, but his imperfect looks only make him all the more endearing. Good-natured to a fault and the best friend a person could ask for, Olaf might be made of snow, but he will melt your heart.
#5: Thumper & Flower
“Bambi” (1942)
These two lovable woodland creatures might be over 70 years old now, but they’re as relevant as they were back in 1942 when they befriended the titular Bambi, and they’re still cute as a pair of buttons. Both Thumper and Flower have those big animated eyes that can make even the most hard-hearted coo. Though Thumper can be impatient or even a little negative at times, he’s a loyal friend to Bambi. Flower, for his part, is almost too sweet, the sort of overly loving, caring and compassionate creature that any animal or human would want in
#4: Flounder
“The Little Mermaid” (1989)
For younger generations, Nemo has taken the title of world’s cutest animated fish, but for those who grew up in the pre-Pixar days of Disney, Flounder was the fish we all wanted to hold close. As Ariel’s best friend, he gets dragged into all manner of danger, but despite his fears, he sticks to Ariel’s side. Why? Because he’s the most loyal fish you’ve ever met. When no one else understands her, he’s there, an unquestioning ally who swims by her side no matter what. Don’t you wish you had a Flounder in your life? Take the loyalty, add his insecurities, round it all off with those big expressive eyes, and you’ve got one adorable aquatic sidekick.
#3: Dug
“Up” (2009)
Dug might be a bit of a dummy, but he’s the sort of dummy you want to have greet you at your door every day when you get home. He’s the sort of lovable oaf you want sleeping at the foot of your bed for the rest of your life. He’s the sort of bumbling canine companion that would give you a reason to smile every day. In short… he’s a dog that anyone would be lucky to have. And that translator collar, which gives you access to all his doggie thoughts, makes him an absolutely hilarious conversationalist. Sweet, good-natured and eager to please, Dug is the adorable overweight golden retriever of your childhood dreams.
#2: Baby Groot
Marvel Cinematic Universe (2008-)
Disney has made Marvel into a cinematic juggernaut. Though not everyone is of the opinion that cute and comics should go together, take a look at Baby Groot and try to tell us, honestly, that you’d rather see the Guardians of the Galaxy without him. This sentient tree creature was already plenty endearing in his adult form, but after being reborn as an infant from the original’s sapling, well, Groot became almost too cute to bear. Seriously, who would’ve thought that an anthropomorphic tree could be so damn adorable? He’s a charismatic little troublemaker, whose limited understanding and infantile ways make him a big presence on screen.
Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions:
Dot
“A Bug’s Life” (1998)
Gurgi
“The Black Cauldron” (1985)
Abu
“Aladdin” (1992)
#1: Piglet
“Winnie the Pooh” franchise (1966-)
Ridiculous as it may sound, this fan-favorite character was left out of the first Disney-made Winnie the Pooh film. It was a creative error of judgement that they rectified with its follow-up. Since making his Disney debut in the 1968 film “Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day,” Piglet has been eliciting squeals of delight from fans young and old for decades. Though shy, bashful, and prone to getting scared at times, Piglet has also shown himself capable of acts of bravery when the situation calls for it - all of which, combined, makes him very endearing. A loyal friend to everyone’s favourite honey-loving bear, Piglet is just about the cutest sidekick you could ask for.
