Top 10 Anime of 2024
Ashley Bowman
Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re looking at the very best anime this year had to offer!
#10: “Solo Leveling” (2024)
Since the day this adaptation was announced, fans of the Korean webtoon never stopped hyping it up - and I guess we should’ve believed them. Solo leveling is the ultimate power fantasy, but somehow that isn’t a detriment as it takes the concept of a bland fella becoming overpowered and crafts an actually compelling narrative. Jinwoo’s second chance at life after being mercilessly chopped down is full of horrifying creatures, even worse humans, and challenges we still can’t believe he got past. Needless to say we are eagerly waiting for our que to ARISE when season two drops.
#9: “Brave Bang Bravern!” (2024)
We live in an age where we seldom see brand new Mecha anime series. Bravern not only scratches that itch, but also made a name for itself among the titans of the genre… Just not in the most conventional way. Easily the most hilarious anime series of the year, We the hapless Isami get in the cockpit of this absurd, sentient, mecha. Though he may not want it, he’s now the only hope humanity has left, as well as the apple of Bravern’s eye. Packed to the brim with hysterical references and radical mecha action, Bravern is the perfect thirst quencher for the mecha anime drought we’re facing!
#8: “Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Part 2” (2024)
Is there any surprise this one cracked the list when it's a constant mainstay on our ‘best isekai and fantasy’ videos? After all the drama that happened in the academy, Rudeus must once again venture out after receiving a letter from his father requesting help. In order to rescue his beloved teacher Roxy after she was separated from Paul’s party, he must enter a deadly dungeon … but word is that’s also where his mother was last sighted. If you’ve seen Mushoku’s previous seasons you know this one brings the laughs, tears, and slick combat and if you haven’t… What the hell are you waiting for? Hop on already!
#7: “Look Back” (2024)
In just one hour, Chainsaw man creator Tatsuki Fujimoto was able to present something so profound that it will linger in your heart for years to come. Look Back is a deeply personal film which speaks volumes to any artist who has ever struggled with the idea of not being enough. While we can’t get too deep into the specifics of this anime without spoiling it, be warned that it is an emotional gut-punch which has very much become Fujimoto’s trademark style. Its success despite its tight runtime could very well usher in a new era of short form anime movies - and we welcome that idea with open arms.
#6: “Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Season 3” (2024-25)
Re:Zero’s second season was admittedly a bit of a mixed-bag - it introduced some great characters and dropped some compelling lore, but it was a little slow and confusing compared to its previous entry. So when season 3 dropped with an hour and a half long first episode we were a little hesitant… But my god was it worth it. Re:Zero has undoubtedly returned to form with a season that has dialed up the action and drama to an astounding degree.
Subaru and the gang shift locations to a city surrounded by water, and as tranquil as that may sound It. Is. Not. they’re having to contend with the absurdly powerful sin archbishops of the Witch’s cult who have taken the city hostage until the witch’s remains are surrendered. This right here is what peak isekai looks like.
#5: “Dandadan” (2024)
Where on earth do we start with this one? Dandadan is truly something else. When a girl who believes in ghosts butts heads with a boy who believes in aliens, an unlikely friendship is formed… but it doesn’t exactly lead these two to the safest of places. Dandadan sees the two get into all sorts of terrifying trouble, from facing off with sumo-stomping martians to clashing with a pecker-pinching grandma ghost. Yes, it’s as bizarre as it sounds - but it’s got enough heart and soul to not come across as the tryhard lolrandom type of humor.
And we’d be remiss not to mention anime’s new top ranking GILF, Seiko. Good lord.
#4: “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom” (2024)
Almost 20 years after its last installment concluded, Gundam Seed has finally returned and it honestly feels like it never left. Freedom is the most unapologetic crowd pleaser of a movie, and in an age of media trying to rug pull or subvert its audience’s expectations, that is such a welcome surprise. Kira Yamato’s life is once again turned upside down when Lacus is kidnapped by the Foundation, who have very devious intentions. Sounds simple and it is, but it just works so damn well. The mecha action is genuinely some of the best in the Gundam franchise and being reacquainted with all your favorite characters again is an absolute treat.
If you had the opportunity to watch it in cinemas among other Gundam diehards, you likely had the time of your life.
#3: “Delicious in Dungeon” (2024)
How on earth do you take the premise of eating monsters in a dungeon and somehow weave a story that gripped the entire anime community? Well, just ask this game changing series. Dungeon Meshi’s cast of Marcielle, Laios, Senshi, and Chilchuk must brave the Lunatic Magician’s demonic structure in order to save their party member before she is unceremoniously digested by the wicked dragon. Since they lost all their moolah in the previous scuffle, they have to make do with surviving off the creatures that dwell within - often times with mouth-watering results. But it’s not all about the food, Delicious in Dungeon is a strongly written fantasy in spite of its gimmick. Trust me when I say, there’s a good reason why Dungeon Meshi was the most cosplayed thing at every convention I went to this summer.
#2: “Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War - The Conflict” (2024)
Ever since returning in 2022, Bleach has been an absolute force of nature in the anime world. While we thought we had reached its peak, somehow season 3 has reached even greater heights. Following on from last season which saw a dazzling display from the Royal Guard, Ichigo faces his most dramatic struggle to date when he takes on his former ally Uryu Ishida.
Couple that with the fact that we finally got to see the return of everyone’s favorite scoundrel, Aizen, and you have a season of Bleach that is the total package.
Before we get to our number one pick, here’s an egregious amount of honorable mentions:
“Dragon Ball Daima” (2024-25)
It’s not the Moro arc that we wanted, but it’s still fun as hell
“The Dangers in My Heart Season 2” (2024)
One of the greatest romance of the modern anime scene
“Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Hashira Training Arc” (2024)
While many have said it's the weakest entry in the series so far, Demon Slayer NEVER truly disappoints.
“KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! 3” (2024)
Kazuma is up to his old dirty tricks and we can’t look away!
“Classroom of the Elite III” (2024)
The mind games continue in another awesome installment
“My Hero Academia: Season 7” (2024)
The great war is underway and we’ve only scratched the surface
“One Piece Fan Letter” (2024)
A short film that really captures the spirit of One Piece and will likely have you tearing up
#1: “Oshi no Ko Season 2” (2024)
The first season of ‘Oshi no Ko’ sent shockwaves through the anime world as it explored the dark side of the entertainment industry in Japan… but they were just getting started. Aqua’s quest for revenge against the man who caused the death of his mother and idol continues in this season which focuses on his time working on a stage production. Sounds pretty bleak on paper, but the execution of this arc was absolutely masterful. Somehow the folks at Doga Kobo were able to convince us that we were sat inside that theater watching the play in real life.
That’s to say nothing of the bombshells dropped between and after the actual performance. We still get chills just thinking about some of them and we are chomping at the bit for more to drop in 2025!
